Hagel is having a good season but to me the only way to justify that trade is another Cup. Otherwise two 1sts for him will always be hilarious (and terrible) IMO.
Why? He’s pacing for 65pts and fits in their top 6 making less than 2mil. Seems like the trades working out pretty well so far.

If we are talking Tampa, an offseason move (since they won't move him in season) that I wouldn't mind is Colton. He's been in a 3rd or 4th line role the majority of his time there. He can play wing or center. He's shown in spurts that he can play a 2C role, just isn't near the top of the pecking order for that role. Got a hell of a shot and plays with an edge. He'd be a risk in a 2C sort of move, but he can certainly play 3C at a high level. He'd probably be able to be locked into a 4.5m deal over 4-5 years next summer as a RFA. If you strike out a few times, I think he's a guy to take a look at.
So, kinda like a Compher replacement (in terms of role) if JTC walks in free agency?

Finding a 2C for this 3-4 year cup window should be an absolute priority. The AVS can then reassess what their needs are later and if they need to do a mini-rebuild to create another window. However, finding a 2C could be the difference between no more cups and 2 more cups. The AVS are going to be top heavy for the foreseeable future, so they need to be able to rely on an ability to find cheap depth for the 3rd and 4th lines, and #5 and 6 D. Luckily, there are a fair amount of grinders, veteran Stanley cup ring chasers, or prospects like Meyers and Foudy that should reasonably fill 4, possibly 5 spots. 3rd and 4th liners are also much cheaper to acquire at the trade deadline. However, it is borderline negligent in roster construction to spend 11 million on Girard and Johnson without having the 2c position solved.

If the AVS really want to put themselves in a good position for the next 3 years, they should overpay for guys like Bennett or Danault. Effective 2Cs on bargain contracts. Newhook, Girard and a 2024 1st for Sam Bennett. Reacquire Jack Johnson and another depth defenceman for late round picks.

Heading into these year's playoffs we would have:

Landeskog-Mackinnon-Nichushkin
Lehkonen-Bennett-Rantanen
Foudy/Meyers-ERod-Compher
Cogliano-Helm-O'Connor

Toews-Makar
Byram-Manson
Depth defenceman/JJ-EJ

Then for next year, if Byram gets re-signed for 3.5 for two years, Meyers for 1.25, and assuming a 21 man roster, Avs would have 6.95 million in cap space next year to find a 3C and #5 and 6 D.

Landeskog(7)- MacKinnon(12.6)-Nichushkin(6.125)
Lehkonen(4.5)-Bennett(4.425)-Rantanen(9.25)
Meyers(1.25)- Free Agent - Foudy (850K)
Cogliano(1)-Helm(1)-O'Connor(1.05)

Toews(4.1)-Makar-(9)
Byram(3.5)-Manson(4.5)
Free Agent - Free Agent
MacDermid(987K)

Georgiev(3.4)
Francouz(2)

Given how little cap space there will be this summer, lots of people will be squeezed and may be willing to take short term deals to take advantage of the impending cap increases. Depending on the discounts people are willing to give, you could possibly get Jonathan Toews, Lars Eller, ERod as your center for around 3 million and then add Erik Johnson/Calvin De Haan for 900K, leaving 3 million for another D. Sign everyone to one or two year contracts.

The season after, there should be a 4 million cap increase which can cover Toews next contract. Avs are then basically set until summer 2025 when Rantanen, Georgiev, Byram, and Bennett's contracts expire along with all the depth guys.

Just out of curiosity, why would Florida do that trade? I mean, we bitch all day long every game day about Girard yet somehow, he's going to be wanted by another team as the centerpiece of a trade for a 2C.

It is not the worst contract on the team. EJ and Manson still hold that dubious distinction.
No EJs is up next year, he'll reassign significantly lower or retire. so it's kind of whatever.

Manson makes less and is better than Girard currently. So nope.

Girards contact sucks for how bad he's gotten and it's like another 5 years or something.

Eh, I figured you'd say something like this. I'll just reply with "I disagree" and leave it at that.

The CBA restricts teams from playing more than 82 games, so any potential increase would require the players' approval.

Owners: we want 84 games
Players: no
Owners: that means more money
Players: we're in

Funny stay at home defenseman Manson has more points than Girard. What does that make Girard? Manson doesn’t even get PP time.

Take away the 2 PP points Girard has and he has 3 points on the year. 3 ****ing points and you continue to defend this guy.

All you ever do is make smug remarks when we're shown you through traditional stats and advanced stats that Girard has been absolute dog**** this year. Why don't you make a counter point then? This is a guy making 5M a season to be a top 4 defenseman and he hasn't been anywhere close to it.

If the bar for trades being good is winning the Cup with said player.... that is WAY too high of a bar. Hagel is a massive success as long as he operates in a top 6 role at his cheap price. Tampa has massive cap issues and casualties have been forming for a few seasons. Having Hagel on the team this season at 1.5m gave them room to grab an extra top 9F/top 4D. One of Cole or Nameste basically. Next year it allows them to afford the raises on Cirelli, Serg, and Cernak. Getting a top 6 guy that is going to put up 25+ goals for 1.5m per is a tremendous value. The other option would be to rental trade for a top 9/top 4 spot in each of the 3 seasons of the deal. That would have cost a lot more.

That's the bar I have when you're giving up two 1sts for a player. Help me win a cup or at least put up like 80 points a year.

His 6 points in 23 playoff games last year were cute.

You could argue that keeping the two firsts instead of getting Hagel would net you two players who would likely never be as good as Hagel in the first place.

There's lots of mixed opinion on the board here about Girard's value, perhaps there are other teams that see him closer to the Girard of 2 years ago. Florida lacks quality defencemen in general. Lundell is ready to step in to be a #2 and Florida needs some assets after trading away tons of depth and picks in recent years. Bobrovsky's contract is an anchor and Florida probably can't really compete for the cup until they get rid of his contract. In my opinion they need to do a mini-rebuild. How much would we need to sweeten the offer - Newhook, Girard, a 1st, and a 2nd?

If we can't get Bennett or Danault, then we could also consider guys like Hayes, Ryan Johansen, Duchene with money retained. Does Newhook, Girard and a 1st get Hayes, Ryjo, or Duchene at a 5 million cap hit? Getting any competent 2nd line center for between 4.5-5.5 million really opens up depth possibilities for the Avs and is worth paying a heavy price. Lehkonen-Johansen-Rantanen 2nd line is still pretty formidable come the playoffs.

Shhhh...if you disagree with him he's gonna put you on ignore!

Girard+1st for Horvat, and find a solid 3rd pair left handed D at the trade deadline and if the team is healthy, they will be the cup favorites again.

Lehkonen-MacKinnon-Rantanen
Landeskog-Horvat-Nichushkin
Newhook-JTC-Rodriques
Cogliano-Helm-LOC

Toews-Makar
Byram-Manson
????-EJ

Cap wise would make sense too. Girard's 5 mill out. Horvat 5.5 in unless you can get Vancouver to retain some which will be even better, and also you'll have a better chance at resigning Horvat. This makes the most sense IMO

Probably the worst time to trade him though. His value is at the lowest point.

Fans always want to sell low and buy high. Always.

I should rephrase. I think the Avs should look at moving G sooner rather than later, but not during the season. I think it’s too big of a move for in season, and it limits what they can get in return.

In terms of the wanting to sell low and buy high, I think that’s natural. You want to offload players that are disappointing and you want to acquire players that look great.

I simply don’t agree… 2 1sts can have a variety of good outcomes that don’t involve cups.

I made a joke a day or two ago that we CMac should call Poile and convince him to bring the whole Duchene trade full circle. Girard and Bowers for Duchene with 3M retained (bringing his cap to us at 5M). I hold no grudge against him. I'll joke about sure, but no real grudge. I mean, I really don't hold a grudge against Sakic for signing with the Rangers. I do like to bring it up from time to time though, same with the snowblower incident.

But is Duchene even at 5M for 3+ years (he's a UFA summer of 2026) be what want for a 2C? I mean, last season he played almost exclusively on the wing, but I have not watched Nashville this season really.

In all seriousness, if Anaheim picks top 3 in the upcoming draft (and they should) they'll get a center (Bedard, Fantilli or Carlsson).

They already have Zegras and McTavish at center, they signed Strome for 5 years last summer (dumb) and have Henrique.

That's too many top 9 centers.

If the Ducks end up drafting Bedard, does Zegras maintain his relevance by having even more luxurious hair?

Is Zegras to hair what Tebow was to public prayer?
