You’re looking for differences. But this glosses over the fact that the Avs, at the time weren’t paying what others did for comparable players. When you look at Manson and Chiarot, the Avs paid less. And when you look at Hagel and Lehkonen, the Avs paid less.

The only real example of what you’re saying is Kuemper. Last TDL, the Avs were still very much about value.
I can’t speak for Chiarots value because it was insanely high. But Hagels contract was the reason he was more expensive than Lehkonen.

And Lehkonens pending contract didn't affect what the Avs were willing to pay?

It seems like you think you're making a point. But I'm not sure you actually are.

I’m making a very valid point? If Lehkonen had Hagels contract he would’ve brought back a lot more in a trade.

Doesn‘t mean Lehkonen was bad value or anything but there’s a reason Hagel was more expensive.

You are both right.

1- Avs are looking for good value trades.

2- Hagel was super expensive because he was making 1.5M AAV for 2.5 years. With our upcoming cap situation, we're about to find out how valuable that kind of contract is for a competent NHLer.

I’m not saying the Avs don’t look for value, they do (all teams do). The point I’m saying is they changed what they did last year when the situation called for it. There were a number saying Barron wouldn’t be trade, and he was traded. There have been many saying the Avs wouldn’t trade a first, yet they did. Whatever move they make, it’ll likely be something different this year.

I do think not being top bidder has kept them from bigger names in the past… that is most likely to happen.

For Horvat... I just have a hard time seeing the Avs end up on top of the bidding. Teams will value the 1st as very late, Newhook doesn't have amazing value, and the prospects are pretty meh. Which leaves the elephant in the room as Byram. I don't see the Avs giving up Byram... I also don't see Newhook + 1st + OO/Behrens/Foudy/etc winning the bidding.
I also think that our prospect pool is even more bare cause I don't think right now you can afford to trade Behrens or Foudy. Foudy is the first prospect outside the first round that has looked this useful to us and that will be big for cap reasons.

With Girard playing awful, Byram medically an unknown, and a good possibility we will lose Toews at the end of his contract we need Behrens. I know you have to give up things to get things just not sure we can afford to lose those two for cap reasons. That is unless it is all in this year and screw having a chance down the road.

Thank god we got Girard away from JJ. He can now thrive like we all suspected he would:

This isn't shocking, easily the worst contract on the team. Girard has been straight dumpster fire this year.

It's probably too late to trade him no one is going to want him with the albatross contract when he plays like a lower end bottom pairing guy.

I honestly don't think Girard will ever slim down. I think he's going to value that extra weight on his body to help protect him a bit more when dudes take runs at him than when he was slimmer but still getting f***ing put through walls.

He completely relied on his feet to both excel as a puck mover and also play defense. Put on a lot of weight and for some reason has never slimmed down once it failed. Now he can’t move in small spaces like he used to.
Exactly how I see it. I'd add I think this is an Avs directive too. A lot of their smaller guys bulk way up. We even see it with Newhook this year too.

It is not the worst contract on the team. EJ and Manson still hold that dubious distinction.

We don't know if Girard gained weight and how much weight if he did, but we do know that he got injured quite a bit in his NHL career already and some serious injuries, too. This very well could be the reason.

IMO next season EJ and Girard should go then the year after Toews and Manson. Ultimately the Avs will have to move on from having such a big part of the cap tied to defense.

Keep Byram* and Makar then a bunch of unexpensive dmen. That's the only way to have a decent 2C and some kind of depth at the forward position.

*Assuming that he can play, of course.

I think it’s entirely the reason. The issue with this is that it may make him a little more durable in terms of how much damage a hit will do to his body, however when he was smaller he was quicker and much better at using his feet to avoid contact. Now he can’t get out of the way as fast so he’s getting hit more frequently.

Yeah, I saw that earlier this week. Numbers are pretty rough, especially that surplus value number. Huge drop in GSVA from 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 to the last two seasons. I'm afraid that we wouldn't be able to give him away now unless we take a similar problem contract back. Or I am exaggerating?

Just need to find a team that values a tiny defenceman who’s awful offensively, is useless on special teams, and is at best below average defensively. And who happens to be absolutely useless in the playoffs. And who’s owed 5 million for another 5 years.

Outside of Manson, this is easily the worst contract on the team.

With your timeline the cap will be reportedly jumping up a total of 10 million from where it currently is, and not only that but you have almost 20 million leaving in EJ/Girard/Toews/Manson.

30 million is a lot of money where you don't have to find just a 2C then a bunch of inexpensive, mediocre defensemen.

Just incredible words from Dreger. You'd think his boy Nonis was back in charge in Vancouver with that kind of "reporting."

A Lehkonen Cirelli Nuke line for 5 years sounds difficult to play against.
It would be the best shutdown line in the league and an utter nightmare for opposing teams. Won't happen as Tampa won't trade Cirelli, but it would be a dream shutdown line.
