Why don't you think so?

At a career 0.43 PPG carrying a $3.5M cap hit in the final year of his contract I think it would be fine sending him out for an upgrade.

We can replace a 0.43 PPG player.
The guys who can play the variety of roles that he can, won’t come cheaply. Avs could get a decent amount if they traded Compher now… easily 2nd and a low B prospect.

I get that... but doesn't beat what LA, MInny, and Boston can offer. And OO don't have 1st round level value today, not even close.
Boston is running Bergeron/Krejci/Coyle and Coyle has had great chemistry with Hall this season. I don't see them bothering to engage in trade conversation for Horvat.

Minnesota maybe but their cap situation is even worse than the Avs cap situation.

Then there's Los Angeles, who perhaps they target Horvat but I have a hard time seeing them justify the payment it would cost for Horvat when centre is like the least of their issues. Their assets should be spent on fixing goaltending and defense, not the centre position.

I don't think anyone would. But there's a real chance with our asset pool it would have to take Byram to get Horvat. Girard is redundant behind Hughes in VAN. And then a 1st, Newhook, OO, Behrens are fine pieces but not standout pieces.

There's a good chance that happens and then I think you just tip your cap to that team and move on to someone else. Like last year when they were going as hard as anyone for Giroux and when that wasn't happening, they said okay and pivoted to Lehkonen.

I wouldn't give in and give up Byram just because it might mean you don't get Horvat. I like him and he's probably the best center available but it's not like you're getting a young cost controlled 2C to match the value of Byram. At least the theoretical value I have of him based on his potential and what I just saw from him at the biggest stage when he was arguably the third best defenseman in a series that included Makar, Toews, Hedman, Cernak, McDonagh, Sergachev, etc.

Boston is already in the rumor mill on Horvat.

Minny desperately needs a top line center, they can make it work too.

LA has a few issues, but they could use a center now and in the future (especially if Byfield busts).

I just can't see the Kings or Bruins getting involved for Horvat. Other areas of their respective rosters? Probably. But not Horvat.

There's no doubt going to be a bidding war for his services but I don't think it will feature teams like Boston and Los Angeles.

If the Avs are adding for another Cup run they will be doing everything in their power to avoid trading roster players, just like they did last year.

Of course not. No one here would, but that's what it would take to beat out other offers. It's just the only asset that makes sense for Vancouver in a scenario like that.

He’s not just a 0.43PPG player. He fills every role that’s ever needed. As a fourth liner when fully healthy he’s the best 4th liner in hockey. As a third liner he’s still high end. Last year Kadri got hurt in the playoffs and Comph even stepped up in the 2C role while the Avs went on to sweep the Oilers and win 2 of 3 games in the cup final before Naz came back.

He evolved his PK and 5v5 defensive player last year to be really effective in those roles too.

I’ve said it before. I was the ultimate Compher hater a few years ago. But that guy has since become the ultimate Swiss Army knife. He does whatever coach asks of him and almost always succeeds. Even this year that Comph, LOC, Cogs line has taken on a task well above their abilities and have done really well with it. JTC has been the driving force of that trio.

Would you use Byram to get cirelli?
Byram is untradable at the moment for obvious reasons. And by "at the moment" I mean for at least a full year and/or until he can prove that he can stay healthy.

I'm saying the absolutes of ___ won't be traded can easily be incorrect (even Byram). We've seen that a bunch over the years. 1st + Newhook is on the high side for a standard rental, but not so far out of the reach. Copp last year got traded for more than that.

I'm sure they will intend to re-up anybody they trade for, even if they are UFAs. I wouldn't automatically assume this is a good thing... don't have to look further than Manson.
I wouldn’t say any of the young guys, picks, or prospects are off the table but @Balthazar has a point it’s not really Avs style to do that for a rental.

The counter point to the Avs don't pay for rentals is Kuemper... They paid (heavily) for 1 year of his services and were okay with him walking.
Much different situation getting 82 games vs 18

They haven’t really been in this position before. We’ve seen them change things when the situation changes. Before last season, they didn’t deal to prospects… then did 3 in 3 deals. Plus Kuemper was practically a rental.

Was one season. Trading for Horvat today wouldn’t really be that different. Plus those ‘18’ games are important, but most important are the 20+ after that.

Who do you replace him with in-season? Like it or not you need a guy like that in the postseason. JTC more than proved his worth during the Cup run.

Thank god we got Girard away from JJ. He can now thrive like we all suspected he would:

I think his number would take a turn for the better if the Avs forwards were fully healthy. But once the D is fully heathy, he'll be back on the 3rd pair and it's really tough to make significant contributions with those minutes. Combined with the fact that his pair will most likely be taking shifts with the Avs 3rd or 4th lines, getting assists will be hard to come by. *LOL*

Yeah, I saw that earlier this week. Numbers are pretty rough, especially that surplus value number. Huge drop in GSVA from 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 to the last two seasons. I'm afraid that we wouldn't be able to give him away now unless we take a similar problem contract back. Or I am exaggerating?

You’re looking for differences. But this glosses over the fact that the Avs, at the time weren’t paying what others did for comparable players. When you look at Manson and Chiarot, the Avs paid less. And when you look at Hagel and Lehkonen, the Avs paid less.

The only real example of what you’re saying is Kuemper. Last TDL, the Avs were still very much about value.
