At the same time, if the cap crunch is going to be as bad as everyone says, then that means all the depth UFAs will be cheap if there’s no cap space to go around.
How about Horvat to AvsYes, he's dirty. Yes, he's an idiot. Yes, he's an overpaid, aging forward on the decline who hasn't played center full time in years. All of these things are objectively true and inarguable and ineffable as the winds on the vast, icy plains of Mars.
Next.
The best depth players still get scooped up fast and at higher rates. The lesser ones will be cheaper. Still in year 3 of a crunch, many teams start getting out of it next season. At the same time, if the cap crunch is going to be as bad as everyone says, then that means all the depth UFAs will be cheap if there’s no cap space to go around.
Feels like 3/4 of people here don't fully understand the kind of cap crunch that we are facing, even without a 2C. This board will be something next summer.
Might help us too. Could squeeze a lot of guys to the point they’re willing to take Rodriguez type contracts and league min. At that point you go for a winner that will boost your stats. This league is a f***ing joke. Of course there'd be virtually zero cap growth during the heart of the Avs' Cup window.
In a flat cap, teams prioritize their best players and fill in around the edges the best they can. They know they have to keep their core. Teams acquiring players still need to pay for high end talent and it is always in short supply… and more demand than supply. Thus they have their salaries still go up. Adding to that, teams know the cap will go up… eventually. So when term in there, teams project around that.can someone explain how a flat cap doesn’t impact player salaries? What appears to be happening is the top players get more each year at the expense of the mid and lower tier salaries and/or forcing teams to use AHL players. If this were to go on long enough the quality of the game is going to suffer immensely.
Because everyone knows the cap is going to increase, especially as there has been a lot of talk about the new TV deal bringing in significant revenue which is likely to bump up the cap significantly, hence the $86.5 mil cap rumors.can someone explain how a flat cap doesn’t impact player salaries? Which bears out MacSakic not extending Kadri.Because everyone knows the cap is going to increase, especially as there has been a lot of talk about the new TV deal bringing in significant revenue which is likely to bump up the cap significantly, hence the $86.5 mil cap rumors.
It appears that the rumor has been overstated since it sounds like it'll only go up 1 mil next year, but sooner than later the cap is going to increase, and top players are going to have that increase factored into their contract.
The NHL and NHLPA would have to negotiate an amendment to the CBA for that to happen. NHLPA has discussed it, but NHL doesn't really seem to want to do that. Which pretty much means the NHL wants something in return for the covid escrow extension (which is practically what that would be).So the rumored cap increases have been +1 this year, +4 next year, +5 the year after IIRC. I’m sure it‘s far to complicated to work, but why not even it out and just improve it by 3mil each season instead?
I assumed it wouldn’t be easy as it sounds. Just feel like that may be a better situation for everyone. The NHL and NHLPA would have to negotiate an amendment to the CBA for that to happen. Or maybe not for the owners and league, that stuff is way over my head
Actually these injuries could be a blessing. Gives us a good look at what we have for next year and things to work on for the young guys.Been saying it since training camp, but this team is a good 2C away from repeating. Stay healthy and this team can go toe to toe with any team in hockey. They’re icing a glorified AHL team and almost beat the a fully healthy rangers team.
Ahh put like that it makes a lot more sense. From the owners' perspective, they have basically footed the bill like the NHL has not lost any revenue since 2020. 2020 and 2021 were huge drops in revenue to the tune of 3b and 1.5ish would be the players' share the owners covered. Only last season was there a surplus to start paying that back and this season is doing that too... just not at a high enough rate. Easy to say the owners should continue to foot this bill since it isn't our money... but this isn't an insignificant decision. Probably another ~200-300m at the end of the season that they'd have to be okay letting slide for another year.

I think most people have been saying address 2C and we can for sure compete for a 2nd Cup.Been saying it since training camp, but this team is a good 2C away from repeating. That seems fair. Not like the OPEC countries who raised oil prices to the sky, under reasoning that it was to cover their losses from Covid. That they did, then kept the price up anyway, cause what are you gonna do, invade the middle east? From the owners' perspective, they have basically footed the bill like the NHL has not lost any revenue since 2020. 2020 and 2021 were huge drops in revenue to the tune of 3b and 1.5ish would be the players' share the owners covered.
