Trade G and let JTC and ERod walk. Ice a ridiculously cheap bottom six and bottom 4 Dcore. Buy a lot during the deadline. Pray the cap jumps a lot in the future, that's my plan.

1sts and 2nds will get you stuff. The Avs can't draft anything with those anyway, might as well trade.
Avs don't have a 2nd (or 3rd) in 23 or 24. 1sts will get you things, but not nearly as far as you think. The going rate for rentals of impact quality is in the 2nd + prospect to 1st + prospect depending on quality of the player. Avs do have all their firsts, but are likely to spend 23's on a rental. Leaving 24 and 25. Which can probably buy 2 rentals. Then, left with nothing.

If you want to find a 3rd line guy on a very good deal... you're looking at 2 1sts right off. Meaning the Avs can get roughly one player. You can't fill a bottom 6 and bottom 4 with what assets the Avs have. At best you're looking at 2-3 players in that group. At worst, you spend on rentals in the next two seasons and end up with nothing in 25.

I mean if you trade all the draft picks then we will 100% run out of assets to make trades and have 0 prospects. We are low on NHL potential prospects as it is.

I dunno you can get Cogliano level players dirt cheap all the time. Surely some cheap vets can be added during the summer as well, people wanna go for a cup. 1sts can be used on better players.

I don't see a better plan tbh. There is no cap at least not next year and trading the top guys just makes the team worse. G or Manson are the only big money movable pieces, doubt Manson is going anywhere.

I guess you could re-tool but I wouldn’t go there.

The Avs haven't drafted a real NHL caliber player after the top 10 since 2009, except Newhook who is very much a project still.

I'm done believing this amateur scouting group will do anything with the picks. Might as well trade.

You can get 4th liners and 6-7D cheap, but you can't get 3rd liners or 3-5 defensemen cheap. There is likely to be a cap casualty sort of move, or use a young prime asset to lock in a cheaper impact player.

Manson is absolutely not movable... first off, full NTC this and next season. Second, he's regressing hard and will be a negative value contract soon if he already isn't one.

This should really reinforce the idea that the Avs have to push as hard as possible THIS season. The ability to compete seasons 2-4 years from now is going to be hampered by the cap and lack of value contracts.

Prospects have still been an integral part of a lot of big trades we‘ve made. Either way our asset pool is very potentially going to be hitting rock bottom soon.

True but that takes time. The Avs need to go for it right now if they want another cup. This is not the time to be cautious with picks or prospects.

If they sit on their hands the window will come and close eventually with no extra cups.

Why is he an idiot?

I really have to point it out? You haven't watched Blues/Avs tilts of late? The moron who got his ass handed to him by Landeskog and later threw a absolute hissyfit when he got dinged for a late penalty? Dude is a meathead who takes dumb penalties and is dirty AF.

His stupid antics aside, he was a decent player back in the day but he's been on the decline for a while. I'm pretty sure he hasn't been a full time center the last 2-3 years.

I really hope Bednar/CMac see that Mikko is our 2C and is capable of still dominating at center. We just need to get him a winger to round out the top 6. I would personally swing for Meier and hope his next contract is in the realm of Forsberg’s. Meier would be an incredible addition and we’d be set at top 6 until Mikko needs to re-up.

The only way that works out is if we trade Girard for picks/prospects and take minimal ($1-2.5m) cap back assuming the projected $1m increase to salary and Byram takes roughly $4m.

Ideally something like a young LH/RHD that can play bottom pair with some potential to be a #4 and some picks would be nice. Then run lines of (years left in brackets)

Landy(6)-MacK(8)-Nuke(7)
Lehkonen(4)-Rantanen(2)-Meier(8)
Meyers(?)-Foudy(2)-LOC(2)
MacDermaid(1)-Maltsev(?)-Bowers(?)
Toews(1)-Makar(4)
Byram(?)-Manson(3)
McDonald(1)-Hunt(1)

Still not sold at all on Mikko as a center. I still think the solution has to come from outside the organization, and that won't be easy.

If Mikko isn't the answer... I'd really like to convince Florida that Lundell could be traded. He's a lock to be a good 2C at minimum and he's on his ELC next season still. The likelihood of this is zero, but in a dream world, that's the type of deal the Avs really need.

How can the NHL’s escrow estimate change that much in that short of time. If I had that sort of accuracy at my job I wouldn’t have one…

It is really the same story every year. The NHL early in the season says they are having the best season ever, record revenues, and the cap is going up by X! As the season progresses, sometime midseason they cut about all of that message in half and say the cap will go up by X/2. By the end of the season, while they still had record revenues, it was only enough growth to cover a 2-3% increase in cap. NHLPA could do more if they wanted to increase escrow, but they didn't. Blame them.

That cycle has happened pretty much every season since 2008. The lockouts and covid have modified the messages in those timeframes, but the theme remains the same.

The reality is that the numbers never supported the escrow being paid off this season. It was a wildly optimistic view especially in the face of the economic realities. As those have surfaced, it is pretty clear they will have a shortfall. I expect between 2-300m when they do the State of the NHL in June.

Everyone's suggesting Mikko at 2C, when Landy is a better fit and already plays C for Nate on the top line. With the new bullshit 1m increase in cap we could run something like this next year
Leky-Mack- Rants
Nuke- Landy- Newhook

Landy doesn't really run that role on that line. He did it a lot a few years ago in the defensive zone, but from the blueline out, Landy didn't really play center. Along with that, Landy hasn't really occupied that role in over 2 seasons now. Even further, the Avs have shown absolutely zero willingness to run Landy as a center. I think he could do it (just like I think Mikko could too), but the Avs have avoided it. Doesn't seem like an option internally.

Newhook is improving but I'm not sure he could fully fill the 2C position next season. Avs don't have many options with a flat cap again.

Newhook will never be able to fill the 2C position on a team with Cup aspirations. He just doesn't have the skill set to do so. I've said that for a long time. Rantanen is the best internal option, not just skill set wise, but the organization and coaching staff have been willing to use him there.

Frankly, I've seen this a few times and I really don't get it... what is the improvement we have seen from Newhook? Is it because he's put up a few points in recent games? If anything, what we see from Newhook is when he gets taken away from the middle of the ice, he can start to have an impact on the offensive end of things. He showed the same thing last year when Sturm was brought in. He's a talented young player with a future... there is just nothing to suggest it will be at center.
