I do think whoever signs Horvat will regret it in years 4+ of the deal… but he’s getting the going rate for 1Cs.

Hayes retained really isn’t the worst option. If you knock 1.5-2m off of it, it becomes good value (for now).

Hayes will be 33 when the contract ends, assuming there's 1.5-2 mil retained that's great value for the duration of his contract. If his play falls off it'll be the last year or two, the cap should be around $90 mil and $5 mil will be the going rate for #3C.

The issue is the Flyers think they're just one piece away or one year away from competing... every year.

Depends on how much the cap actually rises the next few seasons. If the cap only jumps a few mill than I agree but if the cap does go up 4 mill after this year and continues to rise the next few seasons than it could be fine. I don't think the Avs will pay it and if the cap rising that much is actually probable than who knows what Horvat is actually looking for.

I'm overly cautious in my prognostications about where the NHL will be next year. I'm not trying to make it an argument, just saying that one can be made that the cap will be flatter than expected. If others think the cap is going up, I'm not upset that they think so. I hope it does.

It will be interesting to see where Horvat goes, and for how much.

Has anyone ever done a cost analysis on NHL contracts in inflationary periods? It might be interesting (or boring as hell.)

Yeah I honestly have no idea about the cap rising. Just going by reports and who knows how accurate they are. I think it'll have an affect tho across the league. If the cap rising 4 mill after this season is probable that's obviously going to play in to what agents are looking for. I remember one article that said the cap could rise alot over the next few seasons which could be right or wrong for all I know .. but will play a major role in contracts going forward.

How the cap rises the next few seasons will determine how good that Horvat contract is IMO.

Went to staterbate about Bo a bit and realized Vancouver has only gone to the playoffs twice since he joined the team. No wonder he wants out. Anyway, 4 points in 6 playoff games as a rookie and then 12 in 17 three years ago. Not terrible at first glance, but 10 of those 12 points were goals which is kind of nutty.

I think Horvat makes it to one of Boston, Minny, or LA.

Boston has cap space next year and has a lot of incentive to go all in this year with it likely being Bergeron and Krejci's final seasons. They don't really have a ton of good assets, but they can probably group up Debrusk, 1st, and Lysell. They can't win an outright bidding war though.

Minny has cap issues going forward, but they have a major hole in their lineup at 1C that Horvat can solve day 1. They have plenty of assets to throw at the deal in Rossi, Ohgren, Yurov, Faber, Lambos, 1st and 2nd round picks... and some bigger name guys in Greenway and Dumba as throw-ins. They can probably structure a deal.

Now LA... they, by far, have the most ammo. Not that they will dump him, but Byfield is the biggest expendable card that anybody has. Former #2 pick that has an elite toolkit... they could probably structure a 1 for 1 deal right there. Hurts them long-term, but LA is a solid team now if goaltending holds up. Add in Horvat and they have a Kopi-Horvat-Danault rotation. That could be very dangerous for the next couple years, and as Kopi fades into the sunset, Horvat-Danault is still competitive. They also have so many other pieces to structure things... Vilardi, Spence, Turcotte, Kupari, Fagemo, Grans and 1st and 2nd round picks.
I’ll be pretty surprised if Rossi or Byfield get traded. I can also see the Canucks being dumb and valuing NHL roster players (+ picks) over the best prospect offered. For that reason I can really see LA getting Horvat based on the players you mention.

Is that bad? :sarcasm:

Face offs don’t matter in the grand scheme. One here or there can result in a goal, sure.

Last game ESPN also dropped the fun fact that we are the worst faceoff team while on the PP.
And the second highest PP% ….

What do you figure Hayes will cost ? Is he actually available ?

Not saying we should go for Hayes but this is sort of deal we need to find. Horvat is way too expensive.

Don't go Leafs. Free agency will hurt you long-term and you have to overpay any future core player because the free agent got top dollar. You want to make a team of bargain players, not overpaid.
