I mean he's not great. Plus he doesn't really bring a ton of plus skills or anything. He'd be at best a stopgap here imo.
This only takes into account his play this year. Not only a small sample size, but games in which he's averaging his lowest ToI on a bad Preds team, painfully mismanaged by John Hynes. NAK had worse underlyings when the Avs claimed him last season and that worked out just fine. Can't have enough depth, especially right now at a manageable cap hit.

Interesting that Tolvanen's finishing is so high but his overall offensive numbers are awful.
Nashville doesn't play the kind of offensive up-tempo style the Avs do, which gives me hope about him landing onto more of a fast-break team to utilize that great shot he has. He's just not the best skater, which would definitely be a concern.

Not so sure about that--unless I'm wrong, John Hynes absolutely loves creating rush chances, he is the king of one-and-done (seriously, they did a breakdown about how he has the guy on the wing cut toward the middle and fast up the ice on 3-on-2s to make them 2-on-1s, which are way more dangerous, dude knows how to craft a good rush). I know they grind a lot more in Nashville but IMO they still utilize speed, especially when the puck is on Josi's stick.

I don't know how bad a skater he is, sometimes those players (Stastny) can still be good on the rush. That said, he doesn't seem like much more than a good 4th liner.

Wouldn't mind putting a claim for Tolvanen, if only because we're at the point of 'throw shit at the wall and see what sticks' for forward depth.

I don’t know that he’s a good fit with us but Tolvanen has better offensive instincts and shot than half of what we’re rolling out now. Also don’t know if the cap works but there is offensive talent there. Even if it’s just for a month it may make sense.

I could see Tolvanen managing to be the new Bura here. He's also signed for next year, so we'd have him for two cup runs if he succeeds here. If he doesn't succeed, then you waive him on. Seems like a no-brainer, and so he won't be making it to us.

Issue is that if we are the only team interested in him, then we're on the hook for approximately $750K if we send him down and no one claims him. It's potentially not as simple as just being able to bury the entire cap hit. I would assume that Polie let all other GMs this guy was available for peanuts before waiving him.

If you know his X's and O's I'll certainly relent. I just think he likes to overload the slot which leads to a lot of perimeter play and not a ton of shot attempts, which may explain Tolvanen's scoring struggles a bit. Regardless, there's no question that the Avs play at a much higher tempo with a much higher skill ceiling, something you'd hope he'd immediately benefit from.

Seems like a lot of people are surprised he was waived in the first place, so it'll probably be a moot point anyway.

EK's resurgence is the best thing here IMO.

I'd take Tolvanen here, but it may not work. He's at his best being stationary in the offensive zone and the Avs are not a very stationary team. His skating is clearly and issue, but he tries and can fire the puck.

With Helm/Erod about to return, claiming Tolvanen means we send Foudy down and with the way he’s played I just think that’s flat out wrong. I think Foudy’s earned a longer look.

I expect Tolvanen is claimed by a team ahead of his in the priority list and if not, I think the Avs pass.

Makar needs to start scoring a lot of goals if he wants a shot at the Norris this year.
Still too early, but Makar isn't close to the Norris talk. Right now EK and Dahlin are far ahead of the pack. Morrissey, Heiskanen, and Fox are in the next group with Makar, Serg, Theo, and Hamiltion nipping at their heels. So Makar needs to finish the season better than he's been playing. It would help his case if he was shouldering the load with the injuries as right now it strengthens the arguments against him (which are kinda dumb IMO).

I'll be a bit surprised if Anaheim doesn't claim him.

I’ve liked Foudy a lot, but I don’t think ending the season in Loveland would be that bad. There’s clearly a player there in Foudy, but I think some big minutes in the A could be pretty beneficial for him.

He has gotten middle 6 minutes there for some time. playing at NHL speed would be more beneficial imo.

I think he stays up even when most people are back. He plays at the speed and effort level (so far) Bednar wants.

I don't think it ultimately matters for Foudy's ultimate upside, but I'd prefer him in the AHL for a while longer.

Very surprised Tolvanen made it all the way to Seattle without getting claimed.

Foudy has shown he has the raw materials to be an NHLer, but he's still very much raw. A demotion would not be a terrible thing.

Give C-Mac and Bednar credit, a lot of teams would just default on sending down the player who was waiver exempt instead of risking losing a warm body for nothing, and on three occasions already they chose to waive the veteran over said players.

I think Horvat makes it to one of Boston, Minny, or LA.

Boston has cap space next year and has a lot of incentive to go all in this year with it likely being Bergeron and Krejci's final seasons. They don't really have a ton of good assets, but they can probably group up Debrusk, 1st, and Lysell. They can't win an outright bidding war though.

Minny has cap issues going forward, but they have a major hole in their lineup at 1C that Horvat can solve day 1. They have plenty of assets to throw at the deal in Rossi, Ohgren, Yurov, Faber, Lambos, 1st and 2nd round picks... and some bigger name guys in Greenway and Dumba as throw-ins. They can probably structure a deal.

Now LA... they, by far, have the most ammo. Not that they will dump him, but Byfield is the biggest expendable card that anybody has. Former #2 pick that has an elite toolkit... they could probably structure a 1 for 1 deal right there. Hurts them long-term, but LA is a solid team now if goaltending holds up. Add in Horvat and they have a Kopi-Horvat-Danault rotation. That could be very dangerous for the next couple years, and as Kopi fades into the sunset, Horvat-Danault is still competitive. They also have so many other pieces to structure things... Vilardi, Spence, Turcotte, Kupari, Fagemo, Grans and 1st and 2nd round picks.
