Man I've wanted Horvat since the 2019 draft and all those Barrie rumors were flying around, but I just don't see how the Avs get this one done. Him having a career year probably shot any chance they had in the foot.

Horvat picked the best moment for him, but the worst moment for us, to grossly overachieve. I doubt he's getting traded as a pure rental. IMO the team that trades for him will extend him.

Maybe Horvat just doesn't want to sign in Vancouver. Realistically he's looking for a massive payday and that eliminates the Avs because I doubt we would gave up what would be needed if we can't re-sign him. If they go the rental route I think there will be a cap on what they will pay for that.

Gonna guess they're better at the D-zone draws since JTC probably takes most of those
Very likely.

Also, missing Landeskog the whole year so far has hurt them big-time on draws, especially in the attacking zone.

It's quite something to have so many centers, either full time or part time, and so many of them just suck at faceoffs. It shouldn't be that hard to find players like that, it's not like they should have to go find a Jesse Winchester or Zenon Konopka-type.

This season, it is basically Compher and MacKinnon... with Compher the vast majority. If you dive into the stats on the faceoffs... Compher is pretty consistent all around at ~47%. MacK cares in the offensive and defensive zones (both 50 or above)... does give a F in the neutral zone (below 40%). Newhook flat out sucks at them. ERod feasts off the MacK's of the world, sucks when it matters. Rants seems to suck anytime he is on his off hand, but (very small sample here this year) is great in the defensive zone.

And yet the best PP in the league.

Hmmmmm 🤔
Are we back to number 1, I thought we fell to number 2?

MacK is so good on zone entries it didn't really matter losing the first 30 seconds of the PP with the other team instantly clearing, But since he's been out. Boy howdy has our PP just been in shambles. I expect we keep free falling in PP standings until he gets back.

Obviously the Avs are interested as we know. But idk if I’ve ever seen Baugh post non brief type stuff regarding Av trade targets.

I think Horvat makes it to one of Boston, Minny, or LA.

Boston has cap space next year and has a lot of incentive to go all in this year with it likely being Bergeron and Krejci's final seasons. They don't really have a ton of good assets, but they can probably group up Debrusk, 1st, and Lysell. They can't win an outright bidding war though.

Minny has cap issues going forward, but they have a major hole in their lineup at 1C that Horvat can solve day 1. They have plenty of assets to throw at the deal in Rossi, Ohgren, Yurov, Faber, Lambos, 1st and 2nd round picks... and some bigger name guys in Greenway and Dumba as throw-ins. They can probably structure a deal.

Now LA... they, by far, have the most ammo. Not that they will dump him, but Byfield is the biggest expendable card that anybody has. Former #2 pick that has an elite toolkit... they could probably structure a 1 for 1 deal right there. Hurts them long-term, but LA is a solid team now if goaltending holds up. Add in Horvat and they have a Kopi-Horvat-Danault rotation. That could be very dangerous for the next couple years, and as Kopi fades into the sunset, Horvat-Danault is still competitive. They also have so many other pieces to structure things... Vilardi, Spence, Turcotte, Kupari, Fagemo, Grans and 1st and 2nd round picks.

Vancouver will get the most value by trading him to a destination where he's willing to extend, so Horvat/his agent will have a say in where he goes as well.

If for example he doesn't want to live in California (for some reason) then that would rule LA out even if they can offer the best package, other than as a rental deal where the return might be less than others may offer with an extension in place. On the flipside, perhaps he wants to be on a winning team and also has a fondness for rivers...

He’ll want to get paid more than anything. His last big deal, so he will want to go to a place that can afford him. Avs would have a real tough time giving him 9.

If the Avs offered something like $8.5mx8 ($68m) that could be close enough to $9mx8 ($72m) to make him consider it if Colorado is his preferred destination. That's probably the highest the Avs could go while also shipping out a LHD.

For reference ~$3-4m is more or less around the haircut Nuke took to stay in Colorado.

He can likely get 9.5m if he wants. Flat 9 is the haircut.

Whoever gives Horvat $9M is nuts.

Depends on how much the cap actually rises the next few seasons. If the cap only jumps a few mill than I agree but if the cap does go up 4 mill after this year and continues to rise the next few seasons than it could be fine. I don't think the Avs will pay it and if the cap rising that much is actually probable than who knows what Horvat is actually looking for.

I do think whoever signs Horvat will regret it in years 4+ of the deal… but he’s getting the going rate for 1Cs.

I'd rather trade for Kevin Hayes than pay Horvat $9 mil for the next 7-8 years.
Hayes retained really isn’t the worst option. If you knock 1.5-2m off of it, it becomes good value (for now).
