Yeah Couts is damaged goods at this point just like Monahan. At least with Monahan he's a UFA rental(But also nowhere near as good a player). Couts contract is aging like Milk already and its literally year 1 of 8. Hayes with some retention really would be a solid target though. Not sure what Torts thinks of undersized Dmen but a Girard for Hayes trade(With $1M retained on Hayes) would be a decent hockey trade to make. Philly needs Dmen that can move the puck.

Looking around the league at some other possible options though mainly teams playing below expectations right now... I wonder if Filip Chytil could be a target. I think he kind of fits that similar mold of player the Avs like to target. Not a UFA rental, fairly young, hasn't fully broken out yet, but the signs are there that he could be close to a breakout.

He's got 12 points in 21 games this year playing under 15 minutes a night and only 1 minute of PP time a game. Solid defensive analytics. And he's someone they might be able to lock in on a 4-5 year deal in that sweet spot of affordability for us around ~5-5.5M.

Beisdes the Rangers though... Not exactly a long list of teams with decent Centers that could be available right now. You look at the main teams playing below expectations and most of them either have poor center depth, they're in our division, or we've already talked ad nauseum about the available Center. Columbus, Minnesota, St. Louis, Nashville, Vancouver, Chicago, Anaheim, Montreal, etc.

Wonder how much it would cost to pry Pinto out of Ottawa

What do you think of Horvat? Good fit for the Avs?
Good fit style and age wise. Age will matter of course if they can resign him. He's 27 which is on par with the Avs core. If they can trade for him and somehow resign him, they don't have to worry about 2 C anymore

Hey Bo for Couturier damaged goods for damaged goods! Seriously though when that dude is healthy he's the closest thing to a younger Bergeron that you're gonna get. Sucks he's on his second back surgery

I don't watch him or know if he can play center but Buffalo is pretty set at center with Cozens, Thompson, and Krebs. Mittlestadt fits the buy low category.

Can you do an NHL trade where the "future consideration" is actually something and not empty words?

Could it be a "player to be named later"?

In my scenario we trade for player X now and give back player Y after the season.

Rangers can’t afford to part ways with Chytil even if they wanted to. He’s a solid 3C on a team that doesn’t have ideal center depth to begin with. And he is, for now, affordable.

The guy the Rangers appear to be done with is Kravtsov. I have no idea if he’s any good (he’s also getting injured which is not a good sign) but Gallant refuses to play him. Not saying he should be targeted by the Avs but that’s a guy signed for cheap whose trade value is low right now.

Have we all decided that the Rantanen experiment has failed?

Because if Rantanen at C works, this problem is solved. With zero assets leaving the organization.
Honestly looks like it could work. His give af needs to move up a few notches permanently if he’s going to play center (mainly in playoffs which shouldn’t be a problem) but he does look better than I thought he would. Also looked good with Newhook and Nuke which would be his line most likely.

Yeah, Rants can’t be a full-time C. Way too much skating and defensive work involved. Plus, it takes him away from the wall where he does some of his best work.

I remember even the scouts said Hayton was a stretch as a scoring line center in the NHL, and projected him more as a winger. Still remember Chayka walking up on the stage looking like the cat that swallowed the canary, I bet he realized his gigantic mistake later.

Hayton wasn't even a PPG player in the OHL during his draft year and went #5, that's extremely bold

I just don't see it with Mikko at center. He does his best work around the boards and he just doesn't have the engine/skating to play center imo.
