No one is wondering if the Canucks need or want a lesser version of Quinn Hughes?

If this draft is as good as some say and the injury issue doesn’t go away I say tank it this year, keep the first, solve 2C long term, and take care of the cap all in one go here. Could sign a stop gap in the off-season for cheap like Toews, Monahan, Henrique, O’Reilly, etc that plays 2C for a season or two then moves to 3C after. Might even have money for a Larkin or Horvat with some other moves.

We are lucky we still have that first round pick. Damn.

I’ll be shocked if the Avs have their first in 4 months.
While I ageee, and know the window is now, a panic move would not be good. I’d trade it for help this year but with the condition of top 16 pick protection in 2023.

I honestly think the window of contention could be extended by years by bombing this year. Byram/newhook contract both take hits, which makes more room for a 2C that slides down to 3C eventually signing in the summer, and future 2C from 2023 first. This is the way.

Avs aren’t going to panic move here. They’ve surely been feeling out the market for months. They might be more willing to throw in some extra, but doesn’t change any basis of a deal.

Top 16 is too much and limits the value too much… In reality, a 15th pick is realistically 4 years from being a high impact player on the team. You might get 3 if you’re lucky. That’s really outside the window. A top 7-8 is in that 2-3 year range from today. That might be a tail end window guy who can help. That changes the math a bit.

Could be a second Makar/Byram/2023 1st/Rants depending on aging/newhook depending on development window

Age is still a major factor… possible some breathing room opens for next season (really only with Byram’s situation… which is a double edged sword). That’s about all it changes.

Ends up a Kings situation.. and Rants isn’t that young.

Rants could age like Jagr/Thornton he’s built similar and plays a similar style. Not gonna bank on it but I can see him being effective into his early to mid 30s

Lottery protection seems a better idea. It shouldn't change the value of the trade much since winning the lottery is such a small chance.

Yes but this years top 10 are a normal years lottery. That’s what I would be aiming for at minimum just as insurance in case things go really south this year.

Even if he does.... two things. It'll be a step back from today's level of play, but more than that, the bargain of RFA deals is over. He's a $13++ guy on his next contract. That eats away at the cheap depth. I also understand that talent of Byram is a core player... but the dude simply can't stay healthy. The guy has played 79 games total in the NHL including the playoffs in 2+ seasons. He's gotta prove he can actually stay healthy to the point of playing even 50% of the games first.

To me this whole thing is kinda pointless to debate about though. Avs aren't missing the playoffs. The West is terrible and so bad I can't see the Avs missing out on at least a Wild Card spot. More so the Central is terrible. Avs will make the playoffs and they will add to the team as the playoffs near. Who and how much it costs is up for debate, but they will improve the team between now and the deadline.

Why does it matter if we have our first round pick? Are we that desperate to draft another Jost? Our prospect scouts are just sooooo good that we'll have to have a top 4 pick to make it worthwhile

At what point does Bendar take some of the blame for making the top guys play ridiculous minutes on a nightly basis that increases their risk for injury? Now Mack is also out week to week.

Gotta start the rebuild at some point haha

And what, pray tell, is the alternative? Roll out Alex Galchenyuk for 20 minutes a night?

At this point I don’t know you can say playoffs are a guarantee at all. Look at that lineup it’s Makar, Rants, Toews, and G. That’s it. Zero depth. Makar and Toews likely end up injured as well or burnt out playing half the game every night.

A young Patrice Bergeron played 10 and then 63 games early in his career. He’s turned out ok. Crosby missed the better part of two years. I’m not writing Byram off just yet.

It’s a can’t miss type of draft in the first round
