You can say he's not reckless (which I don't really agree with), but the dude still gets rocked a ton. His hits taken per 60 is actually the highest of his career career so far. If you combine the past 3 seasons and filter for 900+ minutes, Byram's rate is the 22nd highest in the league. Highest by far on the Avs (excluding Nemo). EJ... takes on average 3 less per 60. Byram is a magnet for getting hit.. and guys ~6'1" 190 don't tend to hold up to that level of abuse well. You get some randos (mainly Russians for some reason) that can hold up, but it is by far the exception rather than the rule.
Nothing random about it. Russian Machine Never Break.

The NHL hasn't really adopted load management like the NBA has... and may never just due to the parity and cap issues that exist within the league. The Kucherov situations are going to be more of an exception rather than a rule.

Kane is actually pretty healthy... IIRC he's missed something like 18 games since the start of the 15-16 season. Stammer also tends to play a lot on his healthy seasons. Just seems he has 1 of every 3 or 4 years that is a health mess. Crosby and Malkin are both certainly injury prone players. I would say as a group, the Avs are not filled with super healthy players.

If you just want to look at CHIP:

There is a 14 year cumulative there. You can also just click Colorado at the left to see where the Avs are in each year.
Thanks. I did look at that chart but I was looking for a more recent cumulative data like 3 or 5 years. Still really interesting site though. A lot of data there.

Just read his column. It's pure speculation with zero news/inside information.

Paraphrasing: "If Horvat doesn't stay in Vancouver, he's a good fit in Colorado to replace Kadri".

Yea, no shit.

Yeah, I read that as well and came away thinking "well, wait a minute, there's nothing here about this".

Of course the Avs have asked about Horvat... they problem is, what do the Avs move that can actually make a deal in a bidding war? Further than that how do they afford Horvat next year at $9+m AAV?

Yep. Horvat to Colorado only makes sense to outsiders who don't fully grasp our cap and asset situation.

I thought Ryker summed up Girard perfectly a few weeks back "He's a guy you don't appreciate until he's out of the lineup".

There's nothing special about him that's going to pop out when he's in the line up with Makar/Toews/Byram but having that extra support guy is huge, especially when injuries start piling up. When you remove him and plug in a McDonald, the consistency Girard gives you (in the regular season at least) really becomes apparent.

It sure would be nice to see him stay healthy and not get overwhelmed in the postseason. The postseason is when you make your name, and my personal opinion is that Girard just doesn't have the frame to maintain in the postseason.

I do think trading Toews in the summer is the best decision for the defense going forward but relying on Byram AND Girard down the left is rolling the dice for sure. If they end up trading Girard and keeping Toews I wouldn't blame them at all, though it's probably going to cost more.

You mean miss him like we did the last PO’s where the team went 11-3 without him?

Nah it’s pretty easy actually with the growing cap (assuming Girard is going the other way).

The bigger obstacle is Cmakic agreeing to let go of Newhook to actually outbid others and make the deal happen.

First, no, it's not that easy even with the cap growing.

Second, using Newhook as a trading chip is hardly "outbidding" anyone.

He says rental in the article, I don’t think there’s any chance of anything more than that.

Assuming that Byram really has a LBI and not a concussion then it's way too soon to label him as Ryan Murray 2.0

Remember Makar was often injured in his first few seasons too
He doesn't have a concussion. I don't know why this assumption is sticking around as a possibility. He's been at the practice facility repeatedly over the past weeks, but just not skating yet

Any team trading for Horvat would have visions of extending him. The price that he will go for will be much higher than the run of the mill rental because of it.

I wouldn't say it is easy... but possible. The growing cap is still a pretty major question. The NHL has always been on the aggressive side of this. Playing that out though... Horvat at $9m adds 4 to next year's cap commitment. Roughly $74m for 13 players (7F-4D-2G). One of those defensemen is MacD. If the cap is 83.5m... you're trying to re-sign Byram, Newhook, and all the random RFA/UFAs on the team. Even if you go $4m for Byram (absurdly low unless he's continues to be injured all the time)... you have ~5.5m to sign 7 players. If the cap goes up an extra $4m, that doesn't change the math all that much. You go from 800k per guy to 1.4m per guy. Both are pretty low levels of contracts. To basically fill a bottom 6 and 5-6D. Again, possible... just not a ton of quality from the depth.

If Newhook is the only crux of the deal and the Avs won't give him up, they are very stupid... and I don't think they are stupid.

I think it's because of the obnoxious subterfuge that NHL teams employ regarding injuries; it breeds a lot of diustrust. I've been assuming all along it wasn't a concussion BUT I don't ever remember anyone being able to pick out a point where he suffered the injury and I posted earlier that the injury report on the Avs NHL site listed "Unknown" as his injury. Later another report said lower body again. Trust me, the last thing I want is for this kid to be having brain issues.

Kill two birds with one stone: Rantanen for extended Horvat+.

Now, would I do this? No. But you gotta move salary from forward core if you want to sign Horvat long term.
