I hope all of the people beating the drum to trade him are taking a hard look at the composition of this defense. We'd be one Toews trade away from a Makar-G monstrosity right now

Why would that be a monstrosity?

G/Makar has been a pairing plenty of times before with major success, and Cale is significantly better defensively then he was 2 years ago.

G played some of his best hockey paired with Cale.

Convince me a defense led by Sam Girard on the top pairing will win another Cup. Or even succeed in the playoffs whatsoever.

Does anyone know if Girard is still training with EJ? Ever since he started training with him he’s gotten worse. He looked more like his usual self in playoffs last year until he was collapsed in half, but man he’s looked bad so far this year.

Let's wait until the guy goes the whole year without one of his extremely common cold streaks before we lose our collective mind. He's had stretches like this his whole career then goes to sleep just as regularly.
Not only this but let’s see how he looks in the playoffs as the go to PP guy and a first line forward.

Girard was truly great in 2020-2021, but at this point I think we have to chalk most of it up to the "Covid" divisions.

I remember some big games from him that year against San Jose specifically, and I'm sure the story was the same for the Anaheim's and Arizona's of the world.

Girard is going to be right back to producing like he did when he gets a bigger role, whether its on this team or another.

Right now, Toews and Makar get all the major offensive minutes, like with our only line with functional offense or the PP1. He's still an injury concern and a playoff/size concern, but he's still the same player: great puck mover/fantastic passer, smart as hell, decent defensively especially for his size, weirdly elusive on the puck, slower than you think, crappy shot.

Right now he's just being used more defensively and not getting high value offensive minutes, and so his production is naturally lower.

Brock Boeser apparently a healthy scratch tonight. Do some work CMac
No work to be done here.

Edit: That's quite a shitty contract that the Canucks agreed to. Signed 3 years as a RFA walking him straight to UFA? WTF was that? Who signs a core player RFA to a 3 year contract? Yikes!

Should have traded him then instead of agreeing to that BS. It's f***ing awful.

He was supposed to be a healthy scratch but they changed direction at the last minute. Boeser went out and scored the tying goal, though according to Friedman his agent has been given the green light to speak to other teams seeking a trade.

You think it would make him taller.

I’m not so sure that Girard is going to go back to being productive. He has shown no creativity or vision as of late. Hell, on the PP he’s got two plays, cycle up the left side boards and take a muffin shot or cycle up the left side boards and throw it back to the point. He will use either play regardless of what else is going on around him. There’s been plays where he cycles and throws it back to the blueline when there is no one there. He will muffin shot when there’s a much better shooter wide open.

Girards got a few problems the way I see it.

1. He's 2 steps slower than he was when he first broke into the league with us. I don't know if it's added weight, or injuries, but he doesn't have that elusiveness anymore.

2. He's either lost his confidence in making plays since he's been lowered down in the depth chart by Makar and Toews, or he is simply content playing a simple game after he signed his big(ish) contract. Or a bit of both.

If he loses a bit of weight and regains that quickness and someone lights a fire under his ass to start playing with more assertiveness like he used to do, he can turn things around. Sadly he just seems like a weird mix of discouraged and content with what he's doing.

In other words, he plays like Compher. (Just kidding, mostly.)

Anyone thinking, at any time, that G was more valuable than Mikko, even considering contracts, give your head a solid shake.
I mean there's a difference in value to the team and contract value. G's contract value during the Covid year was insane. 5mil for a guy who was pacing for 55 points, a top 5 transition and playing in all situations. Definitely seems liked at the time he was developing into a Spurgeon type top pairing guy. Obviously things have not gone that way but his contract value at the time was very very high.

Playoffs broke Girard. 2 years ago against Vegas all the talk about how he got abused for being small, and last playoffs getting hurt against the Blues and not coming back. I think his confidence is really low right now

Is Boeser a core player for the canucks? I don’t think so

Dakota Joshua got sick or something like that. Frankly it’s really stupid of the team to scratch a player they want to showcase for trade.
