It would be a very Vancouver thing to do to sign Horvat to a big contract, only to find out their core actually isn’t what they’ve thought so they’ve committed to mediocrity long term
They already doubled down by signing a disinterested-looking JT Miller to an untradeable long-term contract, so, yeah, why not lock up the declining years of Horvat with an 8-year extension based on inflated goal totals in a contract year?

Seems like the perfect Vancouver move to continue to keep their fans in playoff bubble team purgatory for the next decade.

3rd amongst forwards in Corsi and xGF last night, too. Very strong game anchoring the 2nd line. He's getting more confident by the game. The outside-inside move he made on the Stars defensemen before running out of space down low could have been a beautiful goal.
Imo this was the only game this season that he has looked impactful in any significant way although I did miss the Vancouver game. I’m happy he had a good game but he needs to build on this game in a big way and play with the forechecking aggressiveness he displayed last night.

This happened on November 15th:

Since then Newhook has 4 pts (2G) in 5 games.

I have mad respect for Bednar. So business, so emotionless. There's an issue with the way Newhook is playing and it is his job to simply get Newhook where he needs to be. So he spends time with him. Shows him video. Then apparently reaps some results.

They deserve worse.

At Center for sure. But he has had a few solid games when he was playing LW.

Still nowhere close to what you need from him, but last night was hopefully a good first step for him. I doubt it, but we'll see

This is called "coaching." I believe it's in Bednar's job description. Fire him!

Jared is the best coach in Avs history and it's not even close imo. When he moves on (hopefully not for a long time, but every coach loses the room eventually), he will be snatched up immediately by another team. Phenomenal coach.
I’ve no doubt he will be when that eventually happens. Far, far worse coaches have been recycled many times over already.

And yeah he’s definitely the best this organization has had though some could argue he’s also the worst.

Yes he has been. I hope he is here for a long time. The team's record considering the quality of players that are injured shows how good of a coach he is. Is he perfect? Of course not, but he really gets the most out of the players. His next team (because it is inevitable) will need to be patient with Bednar until he gets the type of players he requires to succeed. If the GM is stubborn and doesn't give him the players he needs or those players do not buy in to his system Bednar could fail pretty hard unfortunately. Bednar's success has also a lot to do with Sakic/CMac being on the same page as Bednar. That relationship is as strong as any we have seen in NHL history IMO.

7 points, in his last 11 games (plus 3). I'm loving the trajectory here. Absolutely fulfilling his destiny. Keep that momentum going Newy - love you mate.

We had other great coaches too. Stanley cup winners. He is not head and shoulders above them. Not yet at least.

I’ll admit I forgot about Q since I’ve tried my best to exorcise him from memory the last year or so. I’d still put him pretty far ahead of Hartley and Crawford though.

I believe there is a decent amount of rope in this case, especially after the cup. Don't see the Avs having a bad season for some time either, unless they get completely shredded by injuries.
Well that’s the thing, I’m reasonably confident/hopeful that the Avs will be at least good for a good long while. But Q had built about as good a cache as any coach ever has in the modern era and he too was gone after one bad season.

Different management team. Sakic and company feel like a really loyal group with a great relationship with Bednar. I just don't see them axing their cup winning coach after one weak season.

That's fine, I'm just making the point that coaches, whether they're player-friendly or old-school hardasses tend to get fired at roughly the same rate. I'm not worried one bit about Bednar's job status, we know his tenure will end someday, but likely not for a while at least.
