I'd trade for JEE if we could get it done without giving up Byram. Not for Byram tho. Maybe if he was a couple years younger but he's turning 26 in January. If we move Byram I'd want to get a guy with more offensive upside than him. The injuries are obviously a concern but I think most would agree Byram has 1D upside and if your trading a piece like that you want atleast an elite/very good 2C or another similar prospect with some risks that you can roll the dice on being a 1C.

I'd much rather try and get someone like Pinto or try and pry EP out of Vancouver if were moving Byram. I'd honestly even prefer rolling the dice on someone like Shane Wright if things go sideways in Seattle before trading Byram for someone like JEE. Not realistic obviously but I think your setting yourself up for a big loss within the division if you moved Byram for JEE.

Why do you say that? Because he is listed lower in the lineup? He plays 18-19 minutes a night in all situations and is routinely top 3 amongst the forwards in total ice time. Only center who routinely gets more ice EV is whoever is playing with Zucc and Kap. Last year that was Hartman and this year that is Gaudreau since Hartman has been out. That doesn't mean he's a 3C... that means he's the 2C, pretty much all the time and we have some statistical anomalies happening.

Eh, they try him higher in the lineup and then bump him back down. As I said in another post he currently holds that weird Soderberg quasi-2C spot, but isn't showing enough consistency yet to be a true top six guy. Will he get there? Almost assuredly. Just not yet. I realize I'm probably nitpicking on semantics but I'm not calling him a legit 2C until his own team does. They keep putting interim measures and/or absolute scrubs ahead of him on the depth chart.

Trading Byram would be moronic. Allowing Byram to go to a division rival and watching him own us for the next decade would be beyond moronic. Who do you people think we are, the Chicago Blackhawks?

:sarcasm:

I'm sure he would do a lot of harm sitting on the injured reserve list for half the season ever year

:sarcasm:

I mean I get your point and it's a fair one ... doesn't really play a season after he sat out forever than came back for the playoffs and played a big role in winning a cup tho lol that's pretty "harmful".

They don’t really try him with Zucc and Kap. The Foligno-JEE pairing is too good to split and is always their 2nd line. He’s a 2C in the same mold as Danault. Selke level defensive guy who is limited but solid offensively l n

I'd love to get JEE here but hell no to trading Byram for him. If that means no JEE then so be it.

I don't know what Byram did do @Pierce Hawthorne but it must've been bad. That axe grinding has been going on for years with no end in sight.

Nothing. I just don't overrate him like so many others on here do. Its ridiculous at this point. Look at the nonsense right above me. Insanity.

And JEE is a top tier 2C signed long term to a phenomenal contract.

They would ask for Byram, I'd be willing to move him to fill a significant roster hole long term.

Byram will not be traded. Byram will most likely be our next young Captain if Landy is out long term.
Can we stop repeating this please? What the hell has Byram done to put him in the captanicy over Makar, MacK, Rants, hell even JTC? He's not going to be the captain

Not to mention the kid hasn't even stayed healthy for an entire season yet

Seems like there some increasing rumours of Horvat being targeted by CBJ.
Saw that too and it's recipe for disaster.

This reminds me of when Buffalo was signing UFA's for big money to keep Eichel happy. Now Jarmo is trying to do the same thing and will overpay for a 1C in his late 20's to keep Laine and Gaudreau happy. CBJ don't need Horvat, they need a top 3 OA pick this year, another one next year and another one the following year.

It kind of feels like a repeat of that season where they decided to go for it instead of selling Panarin and Bobrovsky

I don't know if it comes from ownership or what, but that franchise clearly doesn't get it. You need to lose in order to win. Refusing to lose is refusing to win.

They are stuck in eternal mediocrity.

At what point, if any, would it make sense to entertain the idea of moving Toews to fix our 2nd line C? Or does his impending UFA after next season limit the return to us being better off letting him walk for free if we can't resign him than moving him at all.

Personally I dont think any of the 3 LD should be off the table. Whatever deal makes us better today, and ideally for the next 2-3 years... Is the deal they should make. Whether its Toews, Byram, or Girard.

That being said... I dont think any of them should be traded until next summer. Go get a rental 2C for this year, and if you do get Horvat, make every attempt to re-sign him as well.

Keep this Dcore together for one more playoff run. Hopefully through other pieces they can add enough to the forward group to win another cup before major reconstruction occurs.

Then, the nice thing about a deal next summer, is you can start talking about an extension with Toews and also start to get a ballpark idea of what Byram and his camp are looking for... Two very important pieces to the puzzle in terms of which Dman to trade IMO. For example, if Toews is willing to take the Weegar contract with us next summer... At that point I really think you lock him up and never trade him. Then you look at Girard/Byram and decide which one to trade between those two. On the flip side if Toews' camp is looking to really cash in and wants something that starts with an 8, he would jump to the top of the trade bait list for me since that is a number we simply cannot afford... So you trade Toews for a reallly good haul and stick with Byram/Girard as the Top 4LDs going forward.

Then you've also got the Byram aspect of it. If he's willing to take a ~$5M bridge deal next summer for 2-3 years... Again I think at that point you keep him and deal G/Toews and if Toews also signs a 6x$6M extension or something like that then Girard is the one you trade. However, if Bo isn't willing to take a bridge deal and wants something in the neighborhood of $8M on a long term deal... Again just like Toews I dont think the Avs can afford that number so he would jump to the top of my trade list.

The grey areas start to pop up if both Toews and Byram decide to chase the big money next summer. That's where it becomes really tough because we're probably screwed either way. Cant really afford either one of them at a number north of $8M and we shouldn't be paying them that much especially when we have no 2C at all right now. The far more important position. I dont really know what would be the best direction to go in at that point. I guess if you think Byram can be as good or better then Toews within ~2 years, you trade Toews. If you think Toews will be the better Dman for the next 2-3 years, you trade Byram. Or you say f*** it and trade Girard, and then likely lose Toews to free agency a year later but at least get one more run with Toews/Byram.

And then of course there's the injury concerns of both G and Bo. G had been extremely healthy earlier on in his career, but the last 2-3 years now injuries have started to ramp up with him enough that its becoming a bit of a concern. For Bo they're a full fledged significant issue at this point. Its good news he isn't dealing with a concussion right now, but the fact he's been in the NHL for 3 seasons now and still hasn't put together anywhere close to 100 games yet is a major concern. Toews missed a stretch last year, but has largely been completely healthy for most of his career outside of a game or two at different times.

Basically it comes down to this for me, ignoring potential trade returns for the time being.

- If both Bo and Toews take reasonable money(~$5M bridge and the Weegar contract) = Trade Girard
- If Bo takes a bridge but Toews asks for $8M+ = Trade Toews
- If Bo wants $8+ but Toews takes ~$6M = Trade Bo
- If both guys want big money = We're f***ed, but I'd probably trade Girard and lose Toews as a UFA.

It gets even more complicated IMO once you factor in potential trade returns... IE if Girards value tanks due to injuries this year it becomes tougher to move him or if Byram(knocks on wood) runs into more concussion issues. On the flip side if somebody crazy like Seattle comes and offers Shane Wright for Byram, it becomes tough to not to move him, or someone offers a crazy deal for Toews.

I think its a very complicated spot. I dont think its anywhere near as straightforward as some folks here think it is. "Trade Girard because Toews and Byram are better" is simply not the way to look at it at all. Not when no matter who you keep/trade, none of them are going to ever usurp Cale as the #1 guy here, they're all LHD meaning one of them is only going to be used as a 2nd pairing guy... Girard is the only one of the three signed long term and to a very team friendly contract, and at the end of the day our Center depth is absolutely putrid, its the most important position in hockey and we need major help with it.

Dude...thanks @Pierce Hawthorne, fascinating and well thought out take. Wasn't expect folks to go all to in-depth. And to be honest, I wasn't actually thinking about who I would prefer to trade. It was more about what could I reasonably expect to get in return for using each specific Dman as the main piece of a trade for a 2C.

I'm just absolutely terrible at determining trade value but was thinking along the lines that if Girard would get us an X caliber center. Toews would get us a Y caliber center and Byram a Z (no, not our old friend) caliber guy.

Problem is, I don't know what centers would fall into each of those categories, that also happen to be on a team that would be looking for that specific type of Dman as the main piece coming back. If Byram is willing to take a bridge, we might be able to get by with Toews being the only casualty for the rest of our window. The downside is, I worry Toews has more value in a futures trade than a hockey trade...unless we are talking a sign and trade...and while possible and even recently accomplished, that's still a relatively rare bird.

Good post.

Regarding the $8m figure for a LHD, I think it could potentially be possible to keep either one of Toews/Byram even at $8m if the one of Toews/Byram that gets moved returns a 2C with a reasonably low caphit. Something around $5m would be workable for example.

You think Wright for Byram would be a home run?

Seattle hasn't done Wright any favors, but he's not going to be solving our #2C issue the next year or two.
