Galchenyuk is better than most of our bottom 6. Problem is he isn't a bottom 6 player and can't play like one.

We'll see.

Eh, 1C vs 2C duties would play a big role. And a new team (and more likely to compete) would probably reignite him. I wouldn't extend him, but I think he'd be fine as a rental this year. At worst case, still leaps and bounds better than what they have now.

It's a bit funny to me that people want Jonathan Toews but ROR is cooked.
I mean ROR is 2nd on the team in TOI for C’s behind Thomas and tied with Schenn. He hasn’t necessarily been used as a 1C so far.

Schenn plays wing... he's listed as a center, but like many players, he doesn't play there.
Well even then Thomas still is playing more than ROR.

The last lines I saw for the Blues had him listed at C as well. But I know he plays both positions.

That'd explain why it took so long for Kadri to sign in CGY. He really was waiting to see if the Avs could make cap room.

Also that @RoyIsALegend story of a player who thought he'd not be an Av anymore in the upcoming days, it was probably EJ.

Best part of not doing the prudent thing and punting EJ for a first is..we still have to use a 1st +++ to get a rental 2C this year, all of whom will be UFA at the end of the year anyways, and all inferior to Kadri.

Some high level chess from CMac. All due to the ridiculously stupid idea that Newhook could fill the 2C position.

Thomas has been the 1C for a bit now (even getting into the last part of last season).

Right now the Blues are throwing anything at the wall to see if it will stick. Schenn can play center and did in the last game, but the vast majority of the time he plays wing. IIRC he's played two games at center this year.

I think it’s the last two from what ive seen. It’s been Thomas-Schenn-ROR down the middle.

Basically Colorado wants someone younger.

I don't think younger than Kadri was necessarily the calculation, though I'm sure that was much preferable.

It's more that anything high into the the $6's and above in terms of AAV this year for Kadri or any othe 2C, wasn't going to fit in to their cap structure. Deadline and next year and beyond is a different calculation though.

I'd be shocked if he played hockey when he is 39 and what sort of contract he would get. Extra year when you are 39 isn't worth much. Unless you are one of the elites who still performed then. Very tiny chance.

Maybe, but how do you bank on that with Naz if you're Sakic? I feel like Joe/CMac always have 2nd and 3rd options they're willing to be patient and take, even if it takes half to a full season to bring them in.

I don't know the exact offer, but it really hinged on getting rid of EJ's contract for the cap. Anaheim and the Avs were in deep discussions about it that likely ended once the Klingberg deal was finalized. They were willing to take on EJ's contract, but wanted a 1st. When they signed Klingberg for a not dissimilar amount of money, it was with the idea the could flip him for a 1st at the deadline. Either way about buying a pick so to speak for them. Avs just weren't willing to spend that to make the room.
Is this speculation? Or do you have inside sources that are comfortable sharing information after some delay?

Not speculation... shouldn't be real hard to figure out teams I have connections to.

I also didn't delay this... I'm just speaking bluntly on it now.

Wouldn't surprise me if ROR was the guy. I don't think that relationship is as broken as you all think. At the end of the day it was the business side of things, remember Sakic signed an offersheet too. We also know he gets along with people in the room.

Watch them fit ROR under the Duchene cap now long term. Joe always plays the long game.

The if with ROR is a big if... and it is the same as Toews. If they are playing well. ROR simply isn't right now, but could turn it around. Toews didn't last year, but is this year. Personally, pausing on either of them as an option until Feb makes sense to me. Other centers, I'd be more willing to make moves for earlier. These two, not so much.

The Avs are finally forced to see what they have with Bowers, Kaut and Ranta. This is a huge opportunity for all three and hopefully all three can prove to be viable depth options or in an ideal world NHL caliber players. I personally would have liked to see Ranta to get a shot with JTC and LOC to allow for Cogs to work with Bowers, but given all the injuries we have beggars can’t be choosers. Just glad we’re seeing some young guys get a shot over players like Megna.

For those who haven’t seen, here are our projected lines:

Yeah I think a making a move for Horvat, you're only doing that if you're able to sign him long-term. Can't see the Avs giving them what they'd want and then having him walk away.

ROR - if you're making that move (which I think is a huge long-shot) you'd probably want to extend him but to a max of 4 years and he's never shown to be even the slightest bit reasonable in the past, so I think he'd be a pure rental if that were to happen but I think it's extremely unlikely.

Toews - would definitely be a rental and a guy who could be a good addition depending on health and how much he has in the tank after a full season. He's probably not an ideal #2C and would be reminiscent of the Blackhawks addition of Michal Handzus.

I'm not convined O'Reilly could play on this team as presently constructed given the speed and pace needed. Kadri could handle it because he's a good, fast skater.

Personally I'd rather Toews over O'Reilly and I think Toews is done.

Horvat is the real gem. Come on, Vancouver. You know you want Newhook + OO + 1st for an extended Bo. Camaaaaaaaaan.

I'm telling you this now so you are not let down:

That 4th line isn't playing more than 4 minutes.
