I doubt Buffalo move fatty, but he’d be a risk/reward guy. He keeps showing spurts and signs and then failing.

I’m not even mad at JT, it’s absolutely not his fault they keep trying to make fetch happen with him in the middle on the power play.
I thought you were talking about JT Miller until I realized you posted in the wrong thread

I think one thing is clear: Newhook is not the answer at 2C. At least this season.

Right now things are looking bleak, because right now I wouldn't trust Newhook at a 2nd line wing. He has been an absolute ghost for a while now. Perhaps it's my frustration talking but this is the time for him to step up, and he simply isn't.

And Meyers IMO looks even worse. Not winning faceoffs, doing nothing offensively, and his defense hasn't been great either.

I get the lineup is depleted and a bit too much is being asked of these guys but they need to do something, ANYTHING, and they're not.

Both just aren’t there yet, but don’t worry on Newhook… as soon as he gets a garbage time goal, a pp gift, and a random 5v5 secondary assist in 5-6, he’ll be on fire and it has clicked.

Meyers needs to be in the AHL. Avs aren’t in a position to develop in the nhl. Time to get a contributor to push him out b

I mean… it never was. I just don’t see how anyone could’ve seen that working based on what he’d shown.
Preach!

Sadly JT Miller could be the most realistic option for us at 2C this year.

If the Canucks decide to move on, he shouldn't be too expensive and has a reasonable cap hit this season (almost the same as Girard). Just have to kick the can down the road for next year and the contract situation.

Vancouver IMO is not trading both Bo Horvat and J.T Miller in one year, and Horvat has made it clear h3me is not signing. Miller is not happening.

Blidh, Bowers, Burke, Englund, Foudy, Galchenyuk, Hudon, Hunt, the other Hunt, Kaut, MacDonald, Malgin, Maltsev, Meyers, Olausson, and Ranta.

Individually if we had one injury on the team, I've got no issues with these guys (except Chucky) stepping in. Malgin or Foudy both can skate with our top guys. They won't be putting up points but wouldn't look out of place as the third wheel on a second line. You can start adding players to those two if you start looking for a callup on the 3rd or 4th lines.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that while I'm disappointed our depth doesn't score at the NHL level, there is a reason why these guys are playing at the AHL level. If they could score at the NHL level, they would be. It's not our depth players that is the issue, it's the fact that we are building half our freaking roster using this list that is the issue.

Such a frustrating season.

Ham fisted flex considering the value of avoiding bad contracts.

All jokes aside...at what point do we embrace the tank and maybe even sell EJ and JTC at the deadline. This Bedard fella might help us win a game or two :sarcasm:

Avs have 4 years at the most to contend… could be as little as 2. Longer than that, the contracts don’t matter.

with that, the Avs have a few bad contracts already on the books. Not like they avoided them entirely.

Also, getting a 2C doesn’t have to mean getting a bad contract. It means prioritizing the position and spending the assets to get the player.

You can skillfully blend in a few AHLers in a lineup when the NHL player matrix is robust. It works short-term. When you start playing too many AHLers they can't be insulated anymore and the lack of quality starts to show.

I know your schtick is to be antagonist/contrarian but do Chris MacFarland and Joe Sakic share these opinions? I know things get said so matter of factly here and that it's one big echo chamber. I'm not sure that you can provide any assurance that, if any one poster here was making decisions for the team, it would be better off.

This window discussion (and I know you're absolutely fixated on it) is a little myopic. The window can be extended if young players like Makar and Byram can elevate the other players as they get older. It's like the only scenario that exists in people's brains is that Landeskog will fall off a cliff and once he does, the Avs are finished. It's entirely possible, if not likely, to have more nuance than that.

You may think it is a schtick, but I just call things as I see it… whether or not that fits in anything.

Windows are very clear amongst teams. There are rare exceptions that happen, but they tend to be once every 20 year sorts of exceptions. You need centers (one of at least top 6 quality and good size), you need defensemen, in the cap world you need value contracts, and old cores don’t win (old is 30). Now teams have a very hard time admitting when windows are over and will over extend a bunch… which arguably hurts teams on the eventual rebuild, but that’s human nature and tough to get over.

You can call me fixated on windows… but when it comes to winning Cups and as many as possible, teams need to maximize their chances in the window. Once you get outside of it, no guarantee you can get it back open with a core. Frequently it becomes a rebuild where results are a complete unknown. If you have a window, you need to take full advantage of it.

Since the Avs simply cannot draft anything useful outside the top 10 the window won't last long. They had the chance to contend for some time but failed miserably after the top picks.

Need to strike gold again with Toews like trades. Not an easy thing to achieve.

This season has been an especially painful reminder of that.
