You think the Avs take Kakko 1st? Ooof…

That’s another pretty big indictment of Avs scouting staff if that’s true.

And Zegras..oh man. That would have been perfect.
Well known they had a lot of interest in him. Just like 2017 where they would have likely selected Patrick if given the choice.

Really curious to see what the reasons are around Vrana. Could be a situation where, at present, he in not worth much, if anything, on the trade market but has asked to be moved and Detroit are trying to do right by him as part of his recovery? Time will tell.

I don't know if they would've actually taken Kakko. They showed a lot of interest in Barkov too before taking MacKinnon.

The only reason they took MacKinnon over Barkov was Roy.
Not saying you’re wrong just that sounds so strange. Coach against an entire scouting department paid to specialize in making this decision and they go with the coach’s pick?

Roy was basically the defacto GM at the time, too.

Plus, it's well known that the 1st round picks, especially high ones, are made by the GM while rounds 2-7 are typically handed off to the scouts.

That's how you end up with Edmonton taking Nail Yakupov 1st overall in 2012 despite literally the entire staff wanting Ryan Murray.

I bet if we take Barkov we don't really regret it, what we actually miss out on we'd never know.

Barkov was more consistent early. We may not have Mikko, but who knows maybe we'd have McAvoy I dunno lol.

It is true... Roy demanded MacK as the selection. The scouts wanted Barkov.

It is always hard to say what would happen in these spilt milk situations. It doesn't really matter today.

Yeah I generally stay away from going down that Rabbit hole. It never ends.

They can be fun to banter about... but all teams are filled with these things. What matters today is the Avs are lacking scoring and depth, especially at center. Goaltending is questionable too.

Rebuild #1 all centers no defense

Rebuild #2 one center and all defense

I do kinda wish O'Reilly would get traded here, and be good for the next four or five years. God he would have been perfect backstopping Mack. That I never get to see that passes me off. Everything else be dammed.

I don't want ROR here today... ROR at 25 would be ideal for this team though.

I don't know if the scouts wanted Barkov or Jones but it's true that Roy was literally the only guy at that table that wanted Mackinnon. And it's coming from the horse's mouth.

That had to be personality or something. That it was that clear of a divide.

Roy is like I'm not giving a shit if this dude yells at me, as long as he scores.

The grand irony of all that is that MacKinnon was the right choice by Roy the GM, but then he also struggled under Roy the coach. Don't know how or why it happened but right before Duchene got traded (and yes, it was BEFORE he got traded, not after), something just...clicked. Might have been Derek Grant's stick going in his eye, I don't know, but it kinda happened right around then.

I think Roy would make a much better GM than coach, his eye for talent is actually very good.

That said, the inner strife of how to build the team was evident as time went on. The Avs would have been a team more like LA (of the Sutter generation) or Tampa in their style than the Avs of today. Bigger players that lean on teams defensively, play aggressive, physical man defensive systems, and free flowing offensive systems. Selections like Jost over Chychrun. Bleakley over litterally anyone else (or trading it). Plus the lack of any real defensemen to play Roy's style just killed it.

We will certainly see if that style can be built from the ground up again. That's exactly what Detroit is building to.

Hadn't thought of Detroit that way, but I'm kinda afraid they'll end up in the perpetual search for a 1C too. Larkin isn't taking a team to a Cup as a 1C. He's not ROR.

I’d be cool with Vrana.
