Fact is somebody on the roster has to go for the Avs to make any sort of meaningful move at the deadline. They just don’t have the cap space otherwise.

I don’t think the Avs will have to move out any salary in season.
Possible… but we really aren’t there yet. None of the guys out are end of the season sorts yet. Add to that, the Avs don’t exactly have a cushion to shutdown a top guy yet. Possible they get that before the deadline, but if they are in a wild card spot, hard to see them shut down a key player. Could be EJ here still… but he’s really it again.

Girard is going from "steal of a contract" to "who the hell is going to take on this contract?" Not quite to that point yet but that's where it could be going if things don't change. He has been so bad and nothing like the player that was considered a part of the core and on the short list for the Canadian Olympic team just not too long ago. If not for all of the injuries, I bet he would've been healthy scratched to send a message at least once by now.

Avs currently have a second pair making $11M and neither one of them can play in the top four. Something has to give if/when Byram and Manson get back.

I think the biggest issues with trading G are who actually desires a struggling smaller defensemen? What type of player do you get in return? Doubtful you get a 2C. With sprinkling of Byram can’t stay healthy, moving G basically leaves the left side at Toews for now and intermittently as Byram is out.

Hopefully he still has a good enough reputation that a team will give something of value for him. Girard is the obvious guy out when Behrens on the way up.

I'm probably the biggest believer in Behrens, but he wouldn't be the reason to trade G. Byram would be the reason to move or not, at least until Behrens has gotten his feet under him at a professional level. Just a guess, but I don't think the Avs will rush him at all (if he is still in the org) and he'll be a guy that really helps in 24-25 rather than this or next season.

We're at the point where I feel more confident with Englund out there than Girard.

That's a bit hyperbolic. But the coaches certainly aren't there and G is proven as a top 4 guy who can handle more. He's just majorly struggling.

I'm no fan of Englund but I think he has defended better than Girard in the d-zone in the last little while. It likely won't last but recently he has done his job relatively well. Of course in lesser minutes against lesser competition.

Unless the Avs trade him because Girard is tanking his own value.

I think Englund has been pretty much shit, but the roles are just different and G is by far the better player.

I think Behrens could step in right away and play well, but that is an uphill battle in most organization. If Toews and Byram are here, Behrens will start in the AHL. Some random 5/6 bigger defensemen will be ahead of him. Not the way I'd roll it, but that's how the NHL just tends to operate.

They can’t afford to trade Girard. That destroys the defensive depth chart. Like it or not he is at present the third best blueliner on the active roster. He cannot be traded until there’s some confidence that Byram can stay healthy and that very obviously isn’t the case.

All y’all’s bitching about Girard will lose your damned minds if he’s traded and Andreas Englund takes his spot.

Girard and 1st for Lundell? Florida has no D other than Ekblad who can't stay healthy or consistent

Defensively, one of the things that made Sammy effective before was that he could stick with just about anyone in the defensive zone and he had a really active stick to break up chances. He has been caught many times recently flatfooted, and I actually can't tell if that's just him fundamentally changing the way he approaches the game or if he is paralyzed by indecision. There was that 3 on 1 a couple games ago where he may as well not have been there as he just stood in place and didn't take any of the possible options. The game tying goal last night was him gliding backwards and throwing a weak attempt at a poke check only to get abused. He needs to get moving again.

I wonder if he overcorrected by trying to get big and strong (lol), but is now incapable of playing that same style. His most effective playstyle was during the lockout, where he seemed to have gained a noticeable step and that allowed him to transition and engage a lot more freely. Right now he's replaced that with the occasional big hit, but everything else seems to have gotten worse.

He’s not moving his feet offensively or defensively. He stood still for most of his OT shift.
