O.....K?

At no point did I mention Byram in my post. I'm more than a little confused.
Pierce claimed that players peak from 21-25 and insinuated that Byram had already peaked. You posted that he claimed the peaks were in there mid twenties but he claimed it was before that in his post. Unless I am misunderstanding.

Could've had two if he wasn't such a playoff liability, but I guess we'll take the one

Hey now…..

I’ll have none of that talk! 😎

given that the Caps will have to clear some space (unless they keep Backstrom on LTIR and pull a Kucherov), a good candidate for them to trade away is Eller, all things considered (particularly their young guys getting bigger roles). iirc Eller has only one year left and fits on our remaining cap space. ideally he is a 3C (a really good one indeed), but... he is used to playing a lot of minutes on the Caps, so I think he could handle it and most important, he is better than the options we currently have.

I think they fully intend to pull a Kucherov

It's probably for the best that we don't commit to Kadri. That contract has a massive chance to backfire quickly. But that said, it will be interesting who we'll find with the remaining money to replace him.

So much for only wanting to go to a contender.

NYI went to the ECF two years in a row, winning against everyone they faced except for Tampa Bay, who they pushed to 6-7 games both times.

Last season was a failure but there was some extenuating circumstances, like starting the season with s huge roadtrip, illness, and injuries to key players.

It's not unfathomable that they could make another run by replacing someone like Bailey with Kadri. Even if they just finish in the WC spots they're still a team built for the playoffs and can cause problems for anyone.

When the NHL switched from paying UFAs the big bucks to paying the RFAs the big bucks, there was always going to be a class of players who got stuck in between. Their last RFA contract was before RFA contracts sky-rocketed, but now that they are due for UFA, there are less dollars and years to go around for them.

I honestly think Kadri is getting a bit screwed over by this and to tell you the brutal truth, I really hope it helps CMac to keep Nate's contract down. I'm worried about his next contract once he losses a step. I'm not sure he's a #1C without his speed.

My preference would be for CMac to swing a trade for a 2C replacement. Combing through capfriendly, I keep coming back to two options I like, but I have no idea if there is actually a trade to be made for either of them. Pierre-Luc Dubois and then Bo Horvat would be my two top targets if I was CMac.

Wonder how long it will take before someone thanks god that I'm not CMac.

Dubois would be a great option if not for the fact that he's been vocal about wanting to play in Montreal in two years when he's am UFA.

Horvat would be the best option but would depend on Vancouver failing to extend him. Avs have had interest in him for several years so I wonder if he's not casting a glance at Colorado and the Avs' hole at 2C and thinking to himself that it would be a better fit for him than what's going on in Vancouver.
