Also Kadri and Lou know each other since the Toronto days and Lou doesn't care about signing players in their 30's.

Seems to me that just committing to Rants as a 2C and finding a solid 2nd line wing is the best option
Certainly not happening until they are 100% convinced that JTC and Newhook can't do it...and even then I'm not even sure they'd put Rants at center for more than a handful of games. History says that they don't like him there.

One thing for sure is they need someone else in the top 6 who can win as damn faceoff.

I don't think Colorado would do it but going after another big time winger instead of a 2C would make that option interesting. You grab a Patty Kane and pair him with MacKinnon/Lehky than insulate Rants at C with Nuke/Landeskog and I think it works out. A Nuke/Landy pairing could make alot of C's passable which is what I'm guessing the plan is with Newhook/Meyers/Compher at this point.

I like that.

Do the Islanders really need to shed much salary if they're signing Kadri? Say they want Kadri at 6M and bridge Dobson at something like 3.5/4M, they don't need to move out much. A Clutterbuck/Johnston type player out will be more than enough for Romanov who doesn't have the numbers to justify big money or even mid-level money.

I don't see them moving Nelson/Bailey/etc just to bring in Kadri. If they're signing Kadri, it's to add to the current team not subtract from it.

Romanov will cost #4 dman money.

Maybe....but if Kadri is signing for 6 --- it is hard to believe that Colorado would not be able to put together darn near the exact same deal. Even if it was 5.8 vs 6 or something regarding Colorado vs. NYI -- I have to imagine he stays in Colorado if term and everything else is the same.

Its only when you drive north of 6.5-7 that it would be a dollar value that Colorado could not compete with. I guess maybe could be a term thing too if NYI is for sure giving the 7 years?

Point being -- It would be odd to see him sign for 6 or less anywhere and Colorado not be the preferred destination.

Depending on how you shake the roster out right now, Colorado has between 3.5-4 million free. Move out JT for 3.5 more and the Avs can make 6 million fit and still leave breathing room for depth/call ups and not feel that pure pinch that teams right up against it do. Its when you go 6.5 or higher that you squeeze out that flexibility completely.

If the Isles do land Naz, Beauvillier is the one i'd be talking to them about. Either he moves Rants to C or insulates the 3rd line, and we go 2C hunting at the deadline. Or we pony up for Miller, which is becoming my preferred route.

I think Newhook + 2023 1st is a decent enough starting point. Newhook would be an easy sell in Van, loveable Newfy that brings Stanley Cup experience & positive character to a young team. Could wear an A in that locker room someday

I don't get the fascination with Beauvillier and why anyone would want to give up significant assets to acquire him.

I'm not convinced that the Avs will be so quick to move Newhook, especially not for a 1 year rental. I could see a 1st round pick and maybe a prospect like Olausson but an established guy like Newhook, I don't see him being involved for a player who'd just be here for a playoff run.

playoff pedigree. Just a good buy-low candidate ala Burakosky when we got him.

You're not getting Miller without Newhook

Kadri said that he wants to play for a playoff team. Islanders might have a tough time getting in playoffs.
The East is pretty deep, so yep this could be tough.

Having Barzal and Kadri as a 1-2 punch will help. They have some reasonable wingers, passable defense, and pretty good goaltending.

But they are still in a division with NYR, Pittsburgh, Carolina, and Washington. Plus Columbus improved.

Most likely they will be fighting for a wild card spot. But they could easily miss the playoffs.

What has he done to earn 4mil?

He's a young second pairing defenseman with a lot of upside. He's not going to score a lot of points but he's physical, can move the puck well and eat minutes.

If they believe in him they'll lock him long term and that's going to cost 4M+. Short term probably close to 3M.

Isles are planning to play him in the top 4 next to Dobson.

Based on what Colorado has done in the past, I doubt they would move Newhook for a rental. Colorado would need to look at tearing some things down by the 2023-2024 season.

I assume that they are in Russia. I am confused by the whole Kaprizov dust up a few weeks ago. Was all of the concern about players returning to Russia simply BS?

Even a bigger question, I was under the impression that Panarin was persona non-grata in Russia due to his status as a very outspoken critic of Putin. Maybe that was all pure BS as well.

Still think there’s a reason the Avs are hanging around, and I’m not sure that reason has changed since UFA opened. Like if the NYI deal falls through, he’ll come here on a one year and try again next year or something. The team was so quick to move on from Kuemper that it just doesn’t seem plausible they’d be willing to wait indefinitely on Kadri unless it was worth their while.

Either way, ready for it to be resolved so we can see the full roster. If we’re waiting on the Isles, somebody else is waiting on us.

Could also simply be that they’re not enamoured with any trade options right now.

We know they were very interested in Kane. Who knows what the Avs are planning.

Cant really be too upset at this point since nothing is happening. The league is at a stand still.
