The Avs defense is like having an extra forward. Plus, with what Byram has shown and with possible progression, it might even be more pronounced. Plus, there's Newhook's likely progression (hopefully).

It's not all things being the same as last year, except now there's no Kadri. There are players on the roster who can cover for the loss, at least to a large extent.

Another thing, the Avs had several key players injured for sustained periods last year. If key guys can play 75 + games, that can also make up for the loss.
It's not in the regular season where Kadri's loss would be felt. It's in the playoffs. The Avs lost against Vegas without Kadri and may also have lost against St. Louis this year without him. Kadri had statistically the best performance of any player in the 2nd round.

Not only that, a player heading into his sophomore year is one of the best defensive forwards in the league? 😂 ahhh man. Horrible take by him.

Now your just making shit up. But that's normal for you hey.

I get your one of the biggest Avs Homers in existence but at least don't make shit up.

When we see Klingberg's contract is what we can imagine an offer to Kadri 5.5M for 7 years. 38.5M is equivalent to 7.7M for 5 years which seems very good. in 4 years, that is to say when Kadri will start to decline, the salary cap will be high enough to make his contract acceptable.

There's no chance Kadri signs for 5.5M.

Unfortunately for Naz this is the first year we're really seeing the drastic effects of a flat cap and he agreed a deal that took him to age 32. There's just a huge amount of risk signing him to what he thinks he deserves. You can't blame the GM's for being leery.

Well Klingberg just took the one year deal. i don’t see Kadri doing that though. Unless the Islanders rumor is true he will probably have to sign with a Buffalo, Detroit, Seattle type team to get close to what he wants.

What you just described is literally impossible though.

It's actually impossible to keep all of those guys on the team for the next 3-5 years.
I said most of that core, yes it´s possible and that´s where Sakic and Cmc have a major role too

You literally said barkov and lundell are probably two of the best defensive centres in the league next year… might want to read your own comments pierce. I didn’t know thinking Byram has a higher value at his position with his upside was being a homer 😂. I think you just have a superiority complex and think your hockey takes are gold but in reality they stink.

If he's willing to take 7.1M X 3 you find a way to make room for him. Having him for 3 years (or less) would be fantastic.

Edit: That math model sucks. It clearly doesn't take in consideration the age curve.

He really shouldn’t get more than Landeskog.

This might be what ends up pushing Kadri to another team. I don’t see the Avs going to $7M.

With less than 82 games of experience after missing tons of time off and on with injury issues.

I get being hesitant about his health but at this point I don't get how you deny his potential and I say that as someone who was pretty underwhelmed early on. I get his shot is a muffin but outside of that? His tools, what he showed this season etc. What's crazy is he wasn't even getting PP1 minutes. Who knows what happens but the potential is obviously there for something big.
When Makar was playing his first season for Avs we here also said the same thing about Makar, he needs to improve his shot. Shot can be improved with practice and time.

Byram will be our next favorite toy.

I wouldn’t be a fan of a 3yr 7+ million dollar deal.

It actually doesn’t help at all. The convergence of Byram’s, Toews’, and Mackinnons new contract values all happen within the next 3 years. So you don’t solve any of your cap issues and still have to trade off or let go likely 2 major contracts within those 3 years.

If you’re gonna sign Kadri, try longer term and get the AAV as low as you can, 6ish, maybe even less. Front load as best you can so that the salary in the final years is as low as you can make it. Makes for a very tradeable contract.

But if you can get the AAV down, you may save yourself from having to drop 2 major contracts to maybe just 1.

Edit: The ONLY short term deal that makes sense is 1 year.

That's good in theory but in reality, good UFA's don't want to be traded later to teams they wouldn't have signed with (reason why they all have NMC's). Chances are the shit team that won't care about the cap hit but only care about the cost in real money won't be Kadri's prefered destination.

I don’t disagree. But if im management, these are the terms I offer. No problem if he doesn’t accept.

A Kadri contract is a painful contract for multiple reasons. The Avs need to make offers that’s suitable to their team. He also needs to understand this is a retirement contract for him, taking him to his late 30s.

If Kadri can get a better situation, better pay, etc, then go for it.

The Avs can only offer what they can. They can’t compete in an open market

This to me is one of the biggest “missed opportunities” that the Avs have wasted the past 5 years. Toronto most assuredly would have rather traded him West and the cap space was unused so would have only cost money for another 1st.

The other two that I really wanted at the time and think the Avs missed on were,

1. Smith instead of Kaut in the 2018 draft. Not because I thought Smith was incredible or at all needed for the Avs, but because I thought he was guaranteed to put up huge points the next year in junior. Instead of trying to get lucky with Kaut turning into a great winger, just draft Smith and trade him for a great winger in Hall or Stone, which he definitely could have commanded as young dmen were crazy in demand at the time. Would have completely removed the risk from the draft pick as Smith was always going to have great value in his draft + 1 year.

2. Offer sheeting Stone to a 1 year deal the summer he signed with Ottawa for one year before being traded. Who knows if this was possible but it would have been the most evil poison pill deal a GM would have done in decades. If Ottawa matched, they would take him right to UFA and he didn’t want to sign in Ottawa, and since it was an OS, they couldn’t even trade him before 1 year was up, at which point he would have 0 value as he would be weeks away from becoming a UFA. The Avs owning Ottawas unprotected 1st that year would have made it that much more diabolical, essentially force them to let go of their best player for draft picks only to the team that owns your own 1st rounder. Was the absolute perfect storm for a an offer sheet for an elite player actually working, Ottawa would have no choice but to let him go.
I don’t think teams draft players based on who’s value will go up the most over the next 8-10 months for intent of trading them later

If it's a 3 year deal, you definitely find a way to get it done.

Sakic's patient approach will serve him well this off-season. The biggest spenders either struck out on the major prizes or have no cap to snag prized FA's with.
