The way Hughes, Dach, Cozens, Rossi etc struggled early at C I would say Newhook did fine. I wouldn't jump ship on him yet. Stay the course and figure out what we have.

Newhook isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Not sure why he’s such a hot topic in terms of trading.

Of that group... only Hughes has shown he's a legit center in the NHL, and he didn't really struggle outside his rookie year. He's had injuries and covid... last year he was flatout elite.

Interesting to see Heinen and Danato blow flip back around to the teams that didn't extend them QO's despite having pretty good showings in 2021-2022. Flat cap and teams needing to prioritize first, seeing what they have left in cap space, etc.

I wonder if we sign Kessel for cheap and say f*** it with Mikko

For some reason he has become the new Tyson Jost for a lot of people, and they are wanting to ship him off in every deal they can think of to trade for someone.

We don't know yet if Newhook will struggle outside of his rookie year either.

Agree with the confusion on why some are so down on Newhook. He's all of 21 and has already shown he can do what you hope any 1st rounder will be able to do and that is be an actual NHL player. His ceiling is still high. With Jost the Avs were patient (well, except that he should have had 1 more year of college) but it eventually got to a point where it was clear what his ceiling was on the team. Newhook might in end up being that way, too, or he could easily have a season best in 2023. I wouldn't be shocked if its the latter.

The market is starting to become clear for some of the no QO players. One year, between 1 and 1.25 million. I suspect we'll see a domino effect on the other names out there.

Of course we don't know, we never know the future... there are so many unidentified astroids out there that we could all die in 3 weeks and be none the wiser of it now!

We can clearly see though that Newhook had some significant issues at center last year. To the point where the organization chose to replace him midseason with a move and then added the top college UFA who is a center. We can also see that Newhook is on the smaller end of the size spectrum at center, and that isn't a complete non-starter... but those that succeed (not always but 9 times out of 10) are typically exceptional skaters who have a knack for creating space with their feet offensively, and closing it defensively with good positioning to go along with the skating. Newhook isn't getting bigger at his age (at least in a positive way), so we can rule that out. On the second part, his skating that was always a strength in his junior and college career quickly got neutralized in the NHL. I'd love to say this is an uncommon phenomenon and Newhook will rise above, but it might actually be one of the most common things to happen to smaller centers as they progress through leagues. Time and time again these 'great' skaters have that advantage lessened in the NHL where everyone is a good skater AND where the systems are so good that it takes a whole different level to be great. I can list many players who this has happened to and this was my big concern with Newhook's transition to the NHL. I was one of the very few posters who kept claiming it would be an issue for him, to the point where it was a running joke... yet here we are with it being a clear issue.

I really don't think Newhook is a center, or at least a center to get the most value out of his game. He just doesn't check the boxes of making it work at a top 6 level. I've had this unpopular opinion for a while and the more I see, the more I think it is correct. You might get an offensively or defensively slanted (not likely both) 3C out of him, but then that begs the question... wouldn't you rather get ~10 more goals and 15-20 more points out of him as a 2nd line wing? With his skill set, I find it difficult to put him down the lineup when he has a legit chance at being a 20-25g guy consistently.

On your Jost part... the Avs would have gotten so much more value out of him if they had traded him midway through the 18-19 season. His value was still there as people hadn't been shown who he really was yet... though I think it could clearly be seen at that point. Not saying Newhook will go that route... but former A prospects don't hold that projection value forever. Newhook is less than a full season away from losing that shine and it being more about who he is as a hockey player. There is a value difference that can exist there.

Organizationally, it would be ideal if he could develop and take over the 2C, would solve a lot of problems, but I am OK if he just becomes a second line wing, if he can develop and just take over for Burky, I would be perfectly fine with that.

He put up some pretty solid numbers considering ice time and linemates too. Wouldn’t mind seeing what he does with some better play drivers.

Yeah it would certainly be ideal, but real tough to count on. Just replacing Burkie though is a bit of a tough sell though…. IMO success is at minimum pushing Lehk down the lineup. Avs have 4 wingers contracted long term… if Newhook can’t push one down, the value equation starts coming into play.

Ya the contracts that will be given out to UFAs at this point are all gonna be steals(Kadri the exception) Nobody has cap space left and the ones who do, have owners that don't want to use it.

Avs are in a good position to add a decent forward cheap with the space we do have. Heinen would have been fantastic at $1M. Hopefully they get a Center like Stastny for a great deal.

This happens every year. This is always the best time to get steals on contracts, because most organizations have set their teams and caps for the following year already and there's always decent players that get left out in the cold.

The Avs rarely take advantage of it outside PTO's though.

I think Newhook had a perfectly fine rookie season. He had basically the same numbers as Compher while playing 3 minutes less per game.

I’ll admit I was expecting a little more though. Maybe my expectations were too high and he really didn’t get much of an opportunity in the playoffs. The 4th line was playing at such a high level that the 3rd lines minutes got cut down. Newy was only getting like 10 minutes a night in the postseason.

It would be huge if Newhook could become a second liner, either at wing, or centre. Bednar loves Lehkonen though. I don’t think he’s worried at all about playing him on the second line, like he did in the playoffs.

My NHL Live sub is still working and I would like to iso on Newhook. Was there a window when Newhook played C or was it just sporadic spot duty? Do you have a subscription to one of the stat sites that provides details like this?

Prior to the deadline ~2/3 of the games. Basically when he wasn't with Kadri or JTC he was at center and about half or more of the time he was with JTC, Newhook was at center (though JTC took almost all the defensive faceoffs unless he was kicked out). Post deadline, I think Newhook played center in one game.
