Or perhaps Buffalo had been a trainwreck for years. And pinning anything on one guy is stupid.

I'm not saying he's very good but he's on par with JTC.
He really isn't on par with JTC though in terms of effectiveness as players, especially over the last several years.

Just say no to Rodrigues. Play JTC as 2C until you can find a trade instead of paying unnecessary money for Rodrigues

Love how Maltsev has been re-signed and no one has even acknowledged haha

Helm and Cogliano being brought back limits Maltsev to being the teams 13th forward at best, as the 4th line will clearly be reunited based on how they played in the playoffs.

Most likely the Avs will also try to ride with 21 players on the roster as much as possible with MacDermid as the only healthy scratch covering 13F and 7D, meaning that Maltsev likely has to pass through waivers in October.

A lot of teams will also try to roll with 20/21 man rosters too for cap reasons so it's probable that he passes through unclaimed.

Whether he gets claimed or not it's pretty clear that he's hard capped as a depth forward unless there are injuries to start the year.

There have been a lot of chances to get Staz back on the team, and it hasn't happened. You have to think there is a reason for it. He jumped ship when the others stayed, and the core hasn't forgotten it. If you have listened to any interviews, you know that our core has/had a lot of sway over Sakic when it comes to acquiring players. He asks for their opinion on guys he wants to bring in. If they had wanted Staz back, he would've been here by now.
Stastny has seemed to always come across as a guy who's gone where the money was.

If I had to guess, I'd bet that the Avs never had the best offer. And thats why he never came back.

But now hes 36, and we have no idea what offers he's getting, nor do we have an idea if wanting to win is starting to become more of a focus.

Then again, maybe the Avs don't want him. Maybe the core doesnt want him. And maybe, Stastny has no interest in coming back.

Is a Compher-ERod middle 6 center group really fine?

The thought of Compher (or Rodrigues) as the 2C is not very appealing to me. But a third line of Newhook-Meyers-O'Connor isn't exactly whetting my appetite either.

I have no idea if MacFarland has a big off-season trade planned, or some move to clear space for Kadri. But if that's not the case, bringing in Rodrigues adds some depth and pushes the MacDermid's and Sedlak's of the world out of the line-up.

Dear God,

Please let Stastny come back to the Avalanche. If you do, I promise not to shoot magpies in my backyard for 6 months and to stop teasing my wife about being short. Sincerely,

Double Dion

It would be surprising if the Avs don't at least add one more forward for up to $3m (or more if salary is moved out for Kadri).

One more middle 6 forward at $3m AAV would give them a 21 man roster with ~$1.5m capspace to cover bonuses and acrual which seems about like what they'll want to have free to play with (if not slightly more).

I think Newhook's best games were post deadline when he got moved to wing and that allowed his offensive talent to really come forward. He's skilled and has a good shot, but he's not a good enough skater to be a 200' center. Limit his responsibilities on the span of the ice and defensively, and he can really show some of that offensive talent inherent in his game.

Is he a top 6 winger if given the chance next year?

This assumes we're 100% healthy in the regular season. Which basically never happens. I think no matter what we end up doing with the 2C position in the off-season, we'll get some looks with different people in different roles, including call ups. It's up to those players to grasp those opportunities or fail and sink back into AHL obscurity.

He should be on the fringe of it... frankly he should be able to take a spot instead of being given though. As good as Lehk is as an overall player, he's a notch down talent wise... and we might be looking at Rants as a center where he should be expected to grab and hold the role.

Strictly IMO here... if Newhook can't grab a top 6 spot by the middle of the season, he should be bait in a deadline deal. Not that he'd be a bad player at that point or that he can't secure a role... but more that the Avs need a legit 5 top 6 wingers if they are going to go down the road of weaker centers. Can't have a weakness there too if centers are weak.

Martin Kaut for Liam Foudy, who says "ehh, whatever"?
They're both going to be on waivers in October. Avs likely won't have room to carry him in the NHL in October, but if you can make that trade after both clear that would be a good trade for the Avs so they can give Foudy another year of development in the AHL.

Bear in mind that Foudy has a guaranteed NHL salary in 2023/24 which might deter other teams from claiming him. He'd be expensive for the AHL if he doesn't crack the NHL roster by 2023.
