I'd take my chances on being able to sign Bo. I'd make a trade for him unsigned based on Newhook and picks to even things out. Keep the defense together for as long as possible. One injury and we'll be so thankful Girard is still around...unless it's to Girard, but let's fact it the kid deserves a break. Metaphorically, not physically....he's had enough of those.

JFresh doesn't approve

I think this is another example of how dogmatic JFresh is with his model and how flawed it can be. It's also a bit of a straw man because $8M doesn't equal elite.

Total Points Last Three Seasons - 217 (12th in NHL)
Points/GM Last Three Seasons - 1.07 (19th in NHL)
5v5 Points Last Three Seasons - 112 (12th in NHL)

Number of Players with an $8M+ cap hit - 57
Number of Forwards with an $8M+ cap hit - 37

Age is a thing though. Contract is starting at age 30.

So what are we looking at:

Landeskog- Mackinnon- Nichushkin
*Dominant 1st line. No changes needed

Lehkonen- Newhook- Rantanen
*Newhook has 50-60 point potential with those wings

Blidh- Compher- O'Connor
*Blidh has the potential to be this years NAK. Lots of energy on this line.

Cogliano- Meyers- Helm
*One of the best 4th lines in the league

Toews - Makar
*No reason to split up this pair.

Byram - Manson
*Love this pairing

Girard - EJ
*One of, if not the best 3rd pair in the league

Reserves: MacDermid

Yes but his main point is that his production doesn't match the AAV, which is clearly not true.

Or more accurately he's trying to say his rates are a better indicator of the player Miller is than his actual production. Which just shows his tunnel vision.

Meyers on 3rd line, Maltsev/Blidh on 4th C. But yeah it’s still a great lineup

I completely forgot about Blidh. Between him, Sedlak, Kaut, Maltsev, and the rest of the kids, I don't see a major need for another forward. Sure, if all of those players prove to be not NHL quality, then you make a move. By waiting we can also be patient and look for the best deals possible.

Competition isn't a bad thing. I wouldn't mind bringing in a player like Svechnikov or ZAR before the season starts. I also don't think you want to play both Cogs + Helm for a full 82 game season. They're both beasts in the playoffs, but they aren't going to bring the same level of compete during the regular seaosn.

That 3rd line is more of a 4th line so the Cogliano/Helm line will just end up getting overplayed.

Overall there's a lack of depth scoring, even though the D should paper over some cracks.

Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Landeskog - Rantanen - Compher
Newhook - Myers - ***
Cogliano - Helm - O'Connor

*** = Kaut/Maltsev/Sedlak/Blidh/PTO/Other

I don't love the depth either, but replacing the *** with Rodriguez doesn't move the needle much for me. If they're going to bring in anyone else, it should ideally be someone who can make a real impact.

Also, even though I did it myself, I see no real point in trying to predict the lines, as I fully expect the Bednar Blender to be on overdrive to start the year.

Miller signed could mean Garland becomes available. If Rantanen can hold down the 2C spot then a RHS forward like Garland would be a decent fit on that second line (he might need to dodge some helmets from MacKinnon though).

If you do a pure futures deal for Garland right now the Avs would be $404k over the cap with a 21 man roster (his contract is $4.95m x4). Moving Compher the other direction would give the Avs $3.1m in space with a 20 man roster.

That said, if the Avs bank the $3.7m capspace they currently have it's possible they could acquire Garland a few months into the season without needing to move money out.

Beyond 2023 it would also be workable since ~$5m is roughly what we all ideally expect to pay for a 2C anyhow.

It's probably unlikely to happen given that MacKinnon doesn't like him (dating back to when they went to school together) but if 2C can get solved internally with Rantanen or Newhook then that might be a name to keep an eye on. His 5v5 production and underlying numbers are pretty good after all, and he does play hard on the forecheck which would suit Bednar.
