It better be. Or that Manson may be coming back. Georgiev I'll give the scouts and Sakic the benefit of the doubt, but he always appeared to me anyway as a quality backup but not really starter material. Hope I'm wrong. At least Sakic didn't wait up for the free agency to start this year, so there's that. I'm sure there is more coming via trade for the Avs.
I mean it wasn't long ago that people were clamoring for Frankie to take the #1 from Grub. Since his injury he hasn't really gotten a chance to see if he can be a number 1 but had as good of numbers as Darcy in spot duty both in the regular season and playoffs. Maybe this is also to give Frankie an opportunity to compete for a starting gig?

If that's the case, I go get Mikheyev, try and get Marchment from Florida, and let Nuke walk.

Marchment would be an excellent backup plan. Dude is one of the best defensive wingers in the league. I don't think there would be much dropoff in play. Marchment is criminally under rated. Much like Nuke was.

Gotta think that Sakic has sent out an email to any team looking to sign Kuemper next week that his rights are available for picks before day #2 of the draft tomorrow. (Leafs are getting a fax)

Otherwise, that's gonna be a pretty sad bunch of NHL scouts at the Avs table tomorrow.

The Marchment contract will be an outright disaster for somebody. Someone is going to pay low end 1st line money for a good 3rd liner.

I have to imagine Georgiev is totally psyched to be coming to the Avalanche with a bona fide shot as a starter on a major contender. Georgiev is probably thinking to himself that this is his chance to shine against guys like Vasilevsky and Shesterkin.

While I had nothing against keeping DK, I wasn't surprised the Avs moved on from him as the money they can save from re-signing him can be better put elsewhere.

I'm hoping that he misses out on the initial surge of signings and ends up being one of those guys that overplays his hands and signs for way less. Think the Avs look really good on wing if they manage to retain Nuke and get Marchment.

Landeskog, Rantanen, Lehkonen, Nichushkin, Marchment would be an absolute PITA group to play against.

I was in the "sign Kuemper" camp as long as the term and AAV wasn't ridiculous. Very interested to see what he does end up signing for.

But I can get behind the Georgiev move. He hasn't obviously failed in the playoffs like either of the Washington Capitals options. And Frankie did win 6 out of 16 games for us in the playoffs. And if neither goalie takes the reins and claims that 1A spot by the trade deadline, we can always burn through more assets (the 2023 1st?) to bring in someone else.

How about a third line of Athanasiou - Compher - Hinostroza. Both guys would come pretty cheap and I think they would excel on this team with their speed.

Fun fact... Georgiev was nearly an Avs 3 times prior to this, including last summer before Sakic decided to put a bit more in for Kuemper.

He probably saw that putting in "a bit more for Kuemper" resulted in .902 goaltending in the playoffs and said f*** paying that for goaltending ever again

Well that line would be kinda fun to watch, a little too fun to be honest. For all the breakaways they’d be producing they’d also give up a ton of scoring chances at the other end of the ice.

Possibly. But he may get the Coleman contract which he would earn because of the offensive upside he showed with 47 points this year.

I'm not sure I would give him 5x5. Someone will. But it could really pay off.

A 50 point guy (who is arguably a top 5 defensive winger) who could slot into the top 6?

Sometimes those defensive players are worth that contract even if they aren't scoring at a crazy pace.

AJ's analysis is always more with the heart than the head though. I get that people like DK as a person. He is a good dude. But paying 6M or more for him is stupid. Especially long term.

Cap control is worth more than feelings if you want to compete.
I don’t see what he’s saying that’s so biased. He’s merely stating that the Avs didn’t want to meet Kuemper’s price point and that trading for another unproven goalie is a gamble. These are facts, there doesn’t appear to be any sentiment attached unless you’re referencing something I didn’t see.

Frankie was 6/6 haha!!

The price of letting Grubauer go:

1st
3 3rds
5th
Timmins

But yeah, they got a cup so who cares. Might not have been able to add Manson without the $2.5m savings in met either btw..
The price of letting grub stay:

- Landeskog
- Nuke (can almost guarantee he’s staying)
- Manson or Lehkonen fitting in our salary last year
- potentially/ likely winning a cup

There’s two sides to this

This Georgiev trade proves again that Sakic doesn't like to rely on free agency.

The only UFA's Sakic has signed in the last 2 off-seasons are Helm, Johnson (PTO), and Murray.
