This is the rubber hitting the road for Toronto. White knuckle time. How can the Avs exploit this? The Avs need to be in on every goalie and other FAs linked to Toronto to drive up the price (if nothing else).
One way to mess with Toronto is to offersheet Sandin. Unfortunately Avs don't have a 2nd round pick in 2023 though so the most they could do is just over $2.1m, with compensation being a 3rd.

No… raises the cap max by up to 10.5m (whatever the team spends up toon opening night). Toronto and Tampa have used this move recently.
It'll be interesting to see if Sakic changes tactic and starts to use LTIR going forwards instead of going the cap accrual route.

They had the opportunity to play the LTIR game with Landeskog at the deadline this year but opted against it, though I don't think they ultimately needed to use it as the big additions they made fit under the cap anyways. A different approach may be necessary going forwards though as cap becomes tighter.

Yup… Anderson is simply a toolsy 3rd liner that drives you crazy. Has all the tools you could ever want, but he’ll never give you what you need. Forward version of Z is very applicable.

Of note too… Dorian is probably the most involved GM in amateur scouting
Did you like the Sens' Tyler Boucher pick last year? I know a lot of scouts had him end of first round or beginning of second round and Ottawa took him at #10. Too early to tell I guess, although I've read that Boucher had a rough development year. Pick gave me Garth "I'm smarter than anyone else" Snow vibes from back in his Islanders days.

Some guys I'd like to target. Mainly 3rd or 4th liners for depth.

W- Mattias Janmark
W- Vlad Namestnikov
W- Michael Raffl
W- Trevor Lewis
D- Michael Stone
D- Jordie Benn PTO
D- Keith Yandle PTO
I like the forward suggestions. If the Avs view Meyers as a 3rd liner then we're probably looking at a 3rd line of Newhook-Meyers-Compher, and a 4th line of Cogliano-xxxx-O'Connor. In that case a RHS 4C/13F like Lewis might be the most appropriate as long as he can still skate at 35, especially as he'd be coming at league minimum. If Meyers is viewed as the 4C though then the other options for the 3rd line make a lot more sense assuming there's capspace for them.

Janmark in particular has been linked with the Avs a lot in recent off-seasons and TDL's so I could definitely see them looking at him if his contract ask isn't too high. Not sure where he'd fit with Newhook/Meyers/Cogliano on the left in the bottom 6 but I think you can make that work by playing one on the right with JTC and Meyers at 3C/4C:

Newhook - Compher - xxxx
Cogliano - Meyers - O'Connor

Whatever the case that 3rd line could definitely use a defensively responsible winger. The fact that Janmark can play center too would also be quite useful.

As for the Dmen, you're gonna have to explain that Yandle suggestion... I don't see how a pure offensive PP specialist who avoids contact is going to fit on the bottom pairing of this team.

Zero idea why anybody would pay a price for Anderson. Legit don’t get it with that guy…

Those questioning Dorion’s talent evaluation ability are out to lunch though. Guy has a fantastic eye… just has been hamstrung by ownership.
Has any player ever profited more from being big than Josh Anderson? Dude got $40m on the back of just one 25 goal season

Here’s my stab at a 22 man roster. The biggest move being trading Girard+Newhook for PLD and signing PLD to an 8x8 contract.

Long term outlook has a lot of wiggle room for the next year with MacK, Byram and Meyers being the only significant pieces and JTC/EJ + any cap increases hopefully covering a good chunk of that. Remember the $9.5m is equivalent to the bonuses being given out, not the cap space.
Hasn't Dubois been quite public about wanting to go to UFA in 2 years so he can go play in Montreal?

Further to the post above, I was just playing around with an AGM to see how feasible adding a 3rd line forward would be.

Lehkonen $4m x4
Janmark $2m x1
Nichushkin $5.5m x6
Jack Johnson $750k X 1
Kuemper $5m x4
Copp $5m x6

The signings above would leave the 22 man roster with ~$1.2m in capspace (or ~$400k capspace if you add a 23rd roster player with a ~$800k aav).

Considering that there will potentially be over $3m in bonuses that's probably cutting it rather fine. And I was also probably on the optimistic side with a couple of the signings too.

That being the case it's probably more likely for the Avs not to add a 3rd liner in UFA with a significant caphit. From a cap perspective it probably makes more sense to ride it out in the regular season with one of Meyers/NAK/Kaut/etc on the 3rd line, and then add a Janmark/Raffl/Namestnikov at the TDL to push guys down the lineup for the playoffs.

The thing with folks continuously wanting to send young guys/picks out for expensive vets, is that eventually the bill is going to come due.

At some point we are going to have to have young talent that is making pennies on the dollar in order to make the cap work. We can't keep selling those guys off.

I am all for winning cups, but just as much, I am all for not getting to the point where i can't hold on to core guys and my teams becomes a bottom feeder.

I would rather make sure I can get to the playoffs every year.

If another team wants to do that, fine but the Avs should stay out of it. Paying Sandin even $2.1M is like a mini, spiteful kotkaniemi situation where you have a player making more money than he's earned with the pseudo GM/moronic owner too stubborn to come to terms with the blunder they made.

I think the Avs are really close to not having to worry about what you're suggesting for a while.

Having your top-6 F, Top-3 D and starting G all locked-in for 3-5 years should be the goal and the rest is all gravy. Sure, you want to make sure to have a solid #3C and #4D if you can as well but if the rest is in place, it's not as bad if you don't.

We just need to find that #2C and figure out the starter and I think we'll be in good shape for the next little while.

Maybe more important than anything else, they HAVE to start hitting at some point on late round picks because their track record has been abysmal the last 10+ years on that.

For the record I don't think the Avs should OS Sandin, I was merely.making the point that that would be the way to go if a team wants to take advantage of their cap situation. Avs don't need a Dman with his profile, nor is Toronto an organisation that you want to piss off given how easy it is for them to retaliate with a big OS of their own full of signing bonuses that the Avs may not match.

I think Nichushkin has Avs over a barrel. Kadri has priced himself out and Sakic has to resign Nuke. Since he already has a history of contract demands I think he’ll ask 7 million AAV and not budge. If I were Sakic, I do it.

I am the opposite. All or nothing. Rather win Stanley Cup and crash out of playoffs, if it means winning the Stanley Cup again..

Imo, the worst thing is to be mediocre. Not good enough to win or not bad enough to win the lottery. You end up making the playoffs barely or you just miss.. then you repeat that for ten years and no hope of winning or getting next super star. That's the ultimate waste of time to me.

Making playoffs means nothing to me, if we are no real contender. It's nice and all, but it won't be you satisfied for long..

There needs to be forward motion or its time to blow it up and start from scratch.

Having Sakic over a barrel is a bit strong imo. Obviously an UFA has a lot of leverage, but it's not like Sakic doesn't have any options.

The best option is clearly to re-sign Nichuskin, no doubt about it. But if he decides to price himself out, Sakic can turn around and re-sign Burakovsky and roll out a 2nd line of Lehkonen/Rantanen--2C-- Burakovsky. Granted that's a step down from last year with Nichuskin, but not an insurmountable step down given how great the Avs top line and defense is.

Either way, whether Nichuskin stays or goes the key is to sort out the 2C situation.

Let's also not forget that Nichuskin has a pretty comfy situation in Colorado as well. He's loved by fans, teammates, and has full trust of the coaches who give him prime minutes with some of the absolute best players in the world on a team primed to contend for a few years. He might choose money over that, which is his right, but he'd also be taking a sizeable risk in going to another organisation where he certainly wouldn't find himself in such a perfect situation.

Crucial in all this is Lehkonen. Had Sakic not acquired an RFA in Lehkonen at the deadline I would be inclined to agree with you that Nichuskin had Sakic over a barrel, but the Lehkonen acquisition hedges the Avs bets and gives them a good fallback plan if Nichuskin's walks.

Sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too.

In a cap league, the inevitable result of success is that your prospect and asset pool gets depleted, and then your star players age you out of a cup window forcing a rebuild. This cyclical nature is an inherent design of the bread and circus.

Getting to the playoffs every year is admirable, but no one will remember the San Jose Sharks or Minnesota Wild type teams who are always at the dance but have no pretty girl to dance with.

That’s how the Red Wings did it!

If the deals bring in players that still have term, i can work with it, but it is the deals that throw away prospects for the short term chase that bother me.

Yes, I want to win the cup every year, but just look at this last season.

We won the cup, and maybe it makes it worth it, but potentially we have lost a first round pick and a young prospect in Timmins if kemp walks as well as potentially losing a young prospect in Helleson and a second rounder for Manson if he walks.

That is potentially 4 young prospects that might have developed in our system and taken cheap roster spots. True, also likely they would have developed into nothing. If Kemp and/or Manson stay, it's not as big a loss, but it seems very likely we lose Manson at the very least, so that is 2 potential prospects we no longer have in our cupboards.

At-least for Leky, we traded a good young prospect for a young forward that can play in our top 6 who we control for a while.

I think my biggest issue is the idea of trading young talent for more guys to make in that 8 mil range and/or are 1-2 year rentals.

I would rather identify THE group I want. Identify those players, then use lower/mid price players and younglings on ELC's to round the roster.
