If Sakic trades Girard, in return he better be receiving the kitchen sink, faucet, counter top, and cabinets.
Jake Bean, who's less than a month younger than Girard, somehow returned a 2nd round pick at last year's draft based purely on upside. Meanwhile, Sammy G is one of only three defensemen (Chychrun, Sergachev) age 24 or younger to have more than 300 regular season games under their belt (340).
I'm obviously okay with any move that makes Colorado better long term, but there are definitely a lot of plusses to keeping Girard. He's young as heck, can reliably play 22+ minutes per night, and still has five years left on his team friendly deal. Looking big picture, when 30-year-old pending UFA Devon Toews undoubtably prices himself out in two years, 26-year-old Girard will still anchor the second pairing with three years left on his deal (with Byram and Makar on the top pairing, obviously).
I see a lot of people saying "trade Girard, sign Manson". That's the ultimate New York Rangers/Toronto Maple Leafs move: invest long term in the older role player on last year's cup team. Mason was extremely solid in the playoffs, but was god awful in the regular season. It was all anyone was talking about for weeks. Though Manson rebounded big in the playoffs, he only averaged 15:51 in the WCF + SCF, and that includes three overtime games. I thank him for his service and look forward to Sakic acquiring Manson 2.0 at next year's deadline.
