I keep not wanting to look in this thread because we just won the cup and its too soon. But this morning I realized that UFA starts in 11 days and now I'm thinking "Dammit, hurry up and lock our damn guys up Joe"
True. I dont even wanna think about the prospects of losing Nuke, someone offer sheeting Lehky, Kadri in Philly etc. I want them to party longer.

This chart is a pretty good illustration of why giving term to Kadri and/or Kuemper would be risky.

The core is still relatively young, especially the D, and saddling the roster with depreciating 31+ contracts could potentially devastate their cup chances in coming years.

Given how careful Sakic has been with managing the cap in recent years I think he's going to err on the side of caution here and try to find a short term solution in goal and a younger 2C than Kadri, unless of course Kuemper/Kadri take surprisingly short term deals (highly unlikely).

I don't think Malkin is a good fit for this team. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player and highly-skilled but I don't think he's what this team needs. Besides, I think he's likely headed to Washington or the Rangers.

I love Matt Barzal, he's probably in my top-3 favorite non-Avs players but I'm not convinced he's what the Avs need for a 2C either.

The actual perfect fit for this Avs team at #2C is Bo Horvat. In terms of skillset, two-way play and the kind of $$ he'll likely command on his next contract, for me anyways he's the guy they should go after and get him locked up.
yes sir. I want all the Bo's. I have always liked Horvats style. Can play on the PP and PK, wins draws and has shown well in the playoffs when the Nucks were there in the Bubble.. Also, I know people dont like him around here but im also a huge JT Miller stan for the same reasons I like Horvat.

I personally like J.T. Miller just fine but I don't like what his next contract is going to look like.

Feel like Miller fits better in the team and has higher talent level, but he’d only be here for a year, Horvat would fit better from a contract standpoint. Also think Lehkonen-Horvat-Nuke would be the ultimate low maintenance, high performance line in the league

One year mercenary to secure his bag and another Cup for the team? Do it.

If we can get MAF on the cheap then I’d just offer Kadri 7x7 and deal with the repercussions later.

Kadri 7x7
Nuke 6x6
Lehky 4.5x5
Manson 4x4
Fleury 2x2
Cogs 800k for 1

Trade Girard for necas and bear

Lehkonen - Mack - Rantanen
Landy - Kadri - Nuke
Newhook - Necas - Compher
Cogs - Meyers - O’Connor
Sedlak

Toews - Makar
Byram - Manson
Bear - Johnson

MAF
Frankie

Following year let Compher and EJ walk giving their money for raises to Byram and Mack?

Sakic hates 32 year olds. I don't blame him.

If you've signed Kadri there's really no reason to trade Girard, just keep the elite D together. Also don't think Necas would be thrilled about not being in the top 6 and would try to force his way out asap.

I just feel like trading Girard is eventually the answer. We don’t need him as much as I respect what he’s brought to the team. It’s either this year or next but no way Byram gets a raise and Girard stays. Bo can take the reigns and we can relieve cap for this season while gaining assets for another run.

This narrative that Kuemper was bad in the playoffs needs to stop. He was Carl Soderberg out there playing goalie with one eye. His numbers in the regular season were quite good, especially in the second half of the season.

Do I want to commit long-term to Darcy, well that depends on the AAV, but any hesitation about committing to him has more to do with age and injury history than his play on the ice, especially in the playoffs.
I disagree, I admit his eye was affected but if that was the only reason why he struggled he wouldn’t have been playing. Who puts a goalie in the finals with one eye?

It shows how impressive this team was winning the cup with .900 goaltending.

Is Husso a late bloomer and legit or just a one year wonder? He's one guy I keep coming back to. He was really good in the regular season and a big reason why the Blues looked good and had people believing in them. I don't hold the Avs series against him because this team even made Vas look bad at times but there's also no denying that he wasn't good when it mattered most. He also got benched against the Wild after that amazing first game he had.

Basically, can he get it done playing behind this defense or is it more of the same where you can just pencil in at least one soft goal a game in the playoffs?

Neither late bloomer nor one year wonder. Pretty much just your expected career trajectory for a non-elite goalie.

Honestly think the same applies to Kuemper. With his eye injury and bad playoff performance I don't think Sakic is going to want to risk it with giving him term. If it fails then you've just gotten stuck with a Martin Jones contract for the entirety of Makar and Rantanen's contracts and effectively blown this teams chances at another cup because they don't have the surplus of assets to undo a mistake like that.
I thought Kuemper looked great between December and March for us. Confident, minimal motion, tracked puck very well. The stats bore this out too, only behind Shesterkin in goals saved above expected in that period.

He was definitely shaky in the playoffs, but you would think it will be easier next time with the experience and pressure behind him and hopefully a healthy eye.

Fleury has lost the net in the almost all of most recent playoffs: to Murray twice in Pittsburgh, to Lehner in Vegas, to Talbot in Minnesota. I'm not sure how closely folks watched the Blues-Wild matchup, but Fleury was constantly overplaying pucks and losing his net.

From my eye test, I would definitely choose Kuemper over Fleury based on performance in 2022 playoffs. Maybe even Francouz as well.

Man I took a break from the boards for a week to celebrate and you guys have got to try it. The stuff I've read in this thread is pretty unrealistic.

We can't really worry about it, our options are going to be semi limited and there is a good chance that our team will look very different next season.

But I have faith Sakic will do his best to keep what he can, make some adds, and put us in a good position for next season.

So take some time to chill, and just enjoy what this team accomplished this year.

Okay, so yes or no on him? Avs aren't getting an elite goalie so lets take that part out of the conversation.

The size and speed are there, but he doesn't seem to have the game to fit a bottom 6 role, especially on a contender. It's telling that NYR who have been moving towards size a lot lately are giving up on him. (Edit: for a late pick or prospect swap maybe it would be worth a gamble as Sakic's annual reclamation project).

Another size and speed winger who could be interesting is Miles Wood, if NJ decide against QO'ing him (that would be somewhat surprising however). Not sure Avs will have cap to spend on a bottom 6 winger like him though unless Nichuskin walks.

Another name to consider if Helm/Cogliano walk would be Colin Blackwell. He has good speed, can chip in offense in a 4th line role, and with good analytics he'll certainly be on the Avs radar.
Another name could be pool party (depending on the price) guy has improved from his first couple of seasons with the oilers, could be another guy maybe Bednar could get more out of? I know he’s played with some top talent there but he’s always showed he could give more. And maybe he will always be that guy who leaves you wanting more from his play.

If he wants 3M sure lol.

I keep coming back to that number. It's even higher than what the Avs paid Kuemper this season. If you're getting one of these average goalies it's got to be on the cheap cheap to ice the best team possible.

I think the Pens and Knights would gladly take those moves back if they could. MAF came off the best save % of is career in 20/21 and didnt do too bad with a lousy Hawk team this past year. With the Av's defense I think MAF would look like a superstar again and be a 2 year upgrade for sure.

I think we will be surprised at what Joe does. I think Naz walks but I expect a big name replacement like Malkin ot Giroux and we end up with Fleury or hopefully Varly if we can get him for cheap.
