Don't trades for negotiating rights typically involve a pick lower than the fourth round. They don't bring much in return historically.
Yeah it's usually like a 5th or 6th, if anything at all. I don't think Gauthier has much value right now

So Seravalli said last week that he thought the Avs would keep Kadri.

Now he says that Kadri is basically a Ranger and he'd bet his house on it.

If true Sakic needs to trade them the rights and get something back.
As has been mentioned in this very thread, Seravalli is fantastic at breaking news but is god awful at speculation/rumours.

The only time I'll follow Seravalli is actual Free Agency day when he's breaking all of the signings/trades. Otherwise it's best to ignore him.

I'll gladly take Copp if they sign Kadri to be big contract.

3D chess by Sakic:
- Rangers sign Kadri long-term for $$$ AAV
- In 3-4 years they will pay $$$ AAV for aging 3C with 3-4 more years on his contract
- Rangers will be in Islanders like situation - will have to trade away their young players who they cannot extend because of bad contracts
- We get Kakko entering his prime on a cheap contract for 2 2nd round picks

Friedman's latest. First time I have heard about Tampa delaying the hand shake, although given their complaints about seemingly every Colorado goal and call on the ice during the series, perhaps I should not be surprised.

23. Tampa Bay: The Lightning have the 31st pick, and none in the second or third rounds. It’s not foreign to them to trade down for multiple seconds, to try and increase their draft bounty. They’ve re-signed Nick Paul, and are trying with Ondrej Palat and Jan Rutta. They’re working with McDonagh to find a trade fit, while Alex Killorn is another possibility (he has some control over his situation). It was a wild scene on the ice as the Lightning waited for the handshakes after losing in the Cup Final. Victor Hedman, as competitive as ever, was making it very clear he did not like the non-icing with about 15 seconds to go. Some of the Colorado players mentioned it, they were so taken aback by what happened. What that says: the Lightning are not satisfied and will do everything in their power to make another run. “The series wasn’t over for 20 minutes before (Julien) BriseBois was doing business,” one source said.

32. Colorado: The Avalanche return to work after a hilarious week of Stanley Cup-damaging debauchery — at least the front office does. (Nicolas Aube-Kubel’s girlfriend did a great TikTok of his on-ice Cup drop). They’re going to work hard on a Nathan MacKinnon extension, which would go into effect in 2023-24. That number will determine a lot of things. It’s going to be hard for them to keep Kadri, even though I think he’d like to stay. He’d be leaving a lot on the table. They’ve shown they have a limit to what they’ll spend on a goalie, so Kuemper will have to decide what he’s comfortable with. Nichushkin is another matter. The Avalanche are determined to take a real shot at it, and it’s not impossible. He knows how good he has it, and if it’s anywhere close, the odds are good for Colorado. (Fun story from the week: Nichushkin apparently lost the flip-flop he was wearing on his injured foot. I can understand how you’d lose the other one, but not that one). Jack Johnson, who had the biggest smile of anyone on the ice, was asked if he’s going to retire. He replied, “I’m not stopping now,” which was excellent. Erik Johnson’s been through a lot, too. This made it all worth it, for sure, but you wonder what he’s thinking after 15 years. They’re still going to be a force. Cale Makar will win a Hart Trophy, perhaps as soon as next year. Bowen Byram showed he’s a stud. Another change might be at the top. Assistant GM Chris MacFarland wasn’t allowed to interview in Anaheim or San Jose. That means he’s getting promoted at some point. Does Joe Sakic move up, while at the pinnacle of his sport once again?

Take with a grain of salt, but Jesse Montano, who was around the team and management throughout the playoffs, connects the Avs with Giroux.

The clip about Giroux is right at the end, last 2-3 minutes. He said he heard from someone he trusts that there is "mutual interest" in a one year big-money deal while the Avs still have flexibility pre-Mackinnon's new deal.

I don't see where it states that they delayed the handshake line. They probably yelled at the refs as the Avs celebrated.

I'd rather commit to Giroux on a 2-4 year deal them Kadri long term. Still think Giroux would be a perfect fit for us even though he chose wrong the first time.

How much would Giroux cost I wonder? I worry that it’s not without risk. I almost wonder if Mikheyev is a better stylistic fit. I’m not even thinking about Giroux choosing Florida. He’s another year older next season. He’ll be 35 in January.

I would love Giroux for next season, he’s a right shot pass first option who is great at faceoffs and is very hungry for a cup. He also drives possession at a high level and could be a great winger to take defensive responsibilities from one of the Avs younger centers.

Would much rather have him at 1-2 years than Kadri for 7. He could be a 2015 Chicago Sharp like player for Colorado. Fantastic forward as the 4th or 5th option on the team.

It’s comes down to cost though. He’s not worth 8 million especially since he’s ring chasing. The guy turns 35 in January. There’s a risk he falls off a cliff this year. The Avs lose their edge in this scenario, which includes suffocating speed and forecheck. There’s an opportunity cost too.

If he’s ring chasing with others doing the heavy lifting, 8 million is too much.

I agree 8 is too much, no other contender would fit him in at that. Something like 6.5 sounds about right to me and I would pay that for one year.

Those comments about the Avs UFA's are pretty much in line with the consensus among posters here:

- Kadri should be allowed to walk as he'll cost too much in term/aav;
- Nichuskin should be priority 1;
- Kuemper should only be brought back at a manageable number (I'd guess the Avs are ok with ~$5m but not higher, just like with Grubauer, and probably like 4-5 years rather than 6).

Good to hear that JJ said he doesn't want to retire. If that's true I'd be happy with bringing him back as 6/7D at league minimum again. Thought he was solid and dependable in the playoffs, aside from that one gaff against the Blues.

One with Giroux as a center looks amazing.

Yeah, I like that too, presuming Giroux can still handle the center job in a speedy system.

I think Giroux and Rantanen would score a lot of nice goals, and I'd bet on Rantanen having a 40 goal season as the main trigger man on a line like that with Giroux the playmaker and Lehkonen winning pucks.

PP1 would also be lit with one of MacKinnon or Giroux in the bumper:

------------------ Landeskog ------------
MacKinnon - Giroux - Rantanen
--------------------- Makar -----------------

Or alternatively you balance the two units:

------------------ Landeskog ------------
MacKinnon - Lehkonen - Rantanen
--------------------- Makar -----------------

------------------ Nichuskin --------------
Giroux ------- Newhook ---- Byram
--------------- Girard/Toews ------------

Yeah that's a risk but it's a risk worth taking assuming that Giroux wants to sign here with a reasonable number. Newhook didn't seem like he'd be even close to ready to handle 2C duties, if he ever will be. 3LW is a good place for him to start the season.

If Soda could play C in Bednars system I trust Giroux or Malkin could handle it as well.
