I would love the Fleury move, I don’t think Kuemper will be worth the money and Fleury should come pretty cheap allowing the Avs to keep more of the team together. His style also fits how the Avs play very well.

Shane O'Brien on NHL Network Radio saying he "did some digging" and found out that the Avs supposedly did everything possible at the deadline to acquire Fleury but couldn't get it done. He said he believes Kuemper is going elsewhere and Fleury will be in Colorado's goal next season.
Do you have a link to the show by any chance?

Avs doing everything possible but not being able to get it done with MAF seems somewhat realistic when you consider the price MAF ultimately went for, given that the Avs had no 1st rounder in 2022, nor a 2nd rounder that could have been conditional.

Signing him on a cheap 1-2 year deal does seem like the sort of move you'd make if you're Sakic if you're highly intent on keeping the rest of the roster intact. The team just won with 0.900sv% in the playoffs amd if you believe MAF can provide at least that then it's probably a worthy gamble to make.

I don't have a link since I was listening on SiriusXM in my car.

Regarding Fleury: if he costs any more than 3M you look elsewhere. If you're bringing in another average to slightly above average goalie the rest of your team has to make up for that like it did with Kuemper.

Steve Kouleas speculated 1 year, 5M for Fleury and I almost gagged.

It’s complicated in that you have to address step 3 before you go about step 1. And it’s kind of a leap of faith.
Agreed on that.

I think that since we just won the focus should be on trying to win again within the next 2-5 years instead of just maintaining and trying to remain just a good team that can contend for 10 years, focus on the next 5 to stay at the top.

Kinda like when we won in 96 and then again in 2001 those years in between where we came ultra close. I'm not saying going scorched earth with ALL our picks and prospects but definitely a lean in that direction to continue to bring home 'multi-cups'!

A or B?...

A) Kuemper $5m+ x 4-5 years

B) MAF $5m x 1 year

I’m tending to agree with Henchy’s belief that Darcy will likely get above 5, closer to 6M on his next contract

If this ends up happening, that’s a move Joe makes because he’s decided to keep Kadri. I can’t imagine MAF, at his age, will cost the same as Kuemper
I think he gets a 1 year deal at $2.5M max.

Yeah, he's not getting that. Weird that some people can't read what UFAs are worth with any deal of accuracy.

Neither. Look elsewhere. Avs just won the Cup paying both goalies combined 4.5M. We aren't in a position to overpay goalies.
Well yeah, I wouldn't do $5m for MAF either. I was just making the point that going a little higher on $ on a one year deal might be preferable to handing out term and big $ to Kuemper.

If they go with MAF ideally it's in the $2.5-3m sort of range.

I know everyone kinda soured on Giroux because he chose Florida over Colorado (at least if the talking heads are to be believed) but I'm still quite intrigued by that possibility because of the options it would present, in particular regarding Newhook's deployment.

Giroux doesn't play center anymore, but he's still elite at draws and is still a strong two-way player even on the wing which may help you cover for Newhook's limitations at center. Put them two together with Nichuskin or Lehkonen and you'd have a pretty intriguing 2nd line, along with a very good 3rd line.

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Giroux - Newhook - Nichuskin
Lehkonen - Meyers - Compher

That would be a worthy experiment in the regular season, and if it doesn't work then you can always go out and get a 2C at the deadline and be stacked for the playoffs.

I also wouldn't underestimate the value of the extra motivation a team can have with a veteran on the team who hasn't won a cup. We saw how much the guys talked about "winning it for Cogliano, etc", and winning a cup for Giroux is also something they can rally around to stay hungry.

I’m a bit surprised the 4th period article suggests Giroux is unlikely to go back to Florida or Philly .
It’d be like signing Tanguay who then proceeded to get injured. We don’t need to sign older guys. Remember what happened when the Avs brought in guys like Beauchemin.

Hm. That certainly makes him less attractive. I wish websites would actually list players based on where they played most in their most recent season.

Boeser apparently had a really good reaction to Boudreau joining the team, so that whole narrative changed this year.

Campbell is an injury-prone head case who has never been a starter before this year. Outside of one incredibly hot month he was pretty bad. Seems to bring it in the playoffs, but he's also incredibly hard on himself. I don't want him anywhere near this Avalanche team. We're a team that is able to flush a loss (or a win) quickly and move on - Campbell dwells on things and blames himself for every mistake.
If the Avs will be looking for their next goalie then they will have to look at the East Coast like they always did. Hopefully one of Isles, Rags or Caps has an extra goalie to give it to the Avs.

I have been adamant that Georgiev is not the type of goalie the Avs should target. But you know f*** it. I guess when it comes down to it I'd be fine with Frankie/Georgie tandem if that enables us to hold on to more UFAs of our team.

I think Georgiev would be thrilled to sign here, buddies with Rantanen.
Yeah, but do you think Georgiev will be able to be a starting goaler?

Unless something changed in the last week or so, I thought it was clear that Giroux was going to Ottawa. He reportedly bought a car there a couple of weeks ago and was shopping a home (he's from there though so who knows).

The bit in bold I agree with. Can he do the dirty work on the 4th line in the playoffs though?

I agree re: Kaut. Might as well get someone in who at least has the speed to play the Avs style rather than waiting for Kaut to get claimed on waivers.
Ya I’m not sold on Gauthier for the playoffs based off his history, but assuming we bring back Cogs and Helm, it would be an ideal situation. It gives those two more rest days during the regular season and Gauthier a chance to prove himself with the Avs.
