Yes it's hindsight, but it's also gambling. Joe gambled on JTC. Nuke wasn't putting up the numbers he did this year, but he was playing like this effort wise. He has been our hardest working, and most effective forechecker the entire time he's been here. If you think the numbers will come, you gamble.
It would’ve been a gamble, but it would’ve been a pretty bad one. Last two seasons he’s been a ~30pt player and had two pretty bad playoffs. Going for term with Nuke early I get, but 5.5 for everything prior to this season would’ve been insane.

I’ve never seen a fan base so desperate to trade UFA rights for late round picks before.

It’s hilarious and I’m here for it.

Joe Sakic taking phone calls on UFA rights.

Well, the lack of a bad gamble has landed us in a shit spot. He knows he can get 6M+ now.

Nuke showed that he was our 2nd most important forward in the playoffs. He was incredibly consistent and we don’t win the cup without him.

As absurd as this sounds, it’s kinda like Nate where he’s so valuable you allow him to name his price, but with the hope he’ll realize the team can’t succeed/contend if he’s a Haza.

So with that, I’d sign him for $7m a year if necessary but pray it’ll at least be in the $6s.

Nichushkin was a nice player up until this year, but he was also totally replaceable. You could've found a ton of players to replace his impact/production. There was nothing to suggest he'd have the kind of season he did, and if you're making the decisions you probably objectively can't justify based on his numbers handing out a $5mil/year deal. I mean really his playoffs probably added $2-3 million onto his contract, he was that dominate.

I love Nichushkin, I've been a fan of his since Dallas, and I want him to stay even if we have to pay a premium. But I'll also just say I think Colorado fits him like a glove. He plays well in this system and w/ these players. I'll be curious, if heaven forbid he does live, if he has the same dominant impact that he did this season.

Remember when grub walked, and saad walked, and Donskoi got taken in the expansion draft...

Basically everyone here thought we were toast I was one of the only people saying I thought we could be even better You can check the history on it.

Here we are a year later Avs are cup champs.

Gaudreau turning down (or not yet accepting) $9.5M/yr is wild to me. If he can get more then good for him but damn. With everything on the line, I'd take Nichushkin over him in a playoff game and he might get almost twice as much on the open market.

Just a small tidbit but CJ confirms we are making progress on Nuke

You have to wonder whether American players became home-sick for the states when enduring Canada's covid restriction.
