I feel like we missed the boat on this Nuke deal. If we offered him 5-5.5M at the beginning of the season, he probably takes it. Now, both he and his agent know that he can easily get 6M+ on the open market. I really hope Sakic can get it done because we can't afford to lose Nuke.
Sure ! On the other hand he deserves the raise he will get. So I’m happy we got a much improved player and we should be glad to pay his deserved raise.

There will be a ton of trades during the draft, they said. Tkachuk! Tarasenko! Chychrun! Gibson! Miller!

Yesterday was nuts. Not sure how you could complain about it.

Day 2 is always boring.

Signing Nuke for 5.5 at the start of the year would’ve been lunacy tbf.

I wonder how much of today's slowness is because of Rogers clusterf*** up in Canada lol. GMs can't make calls etc.

There has been some words about Kuemper obviously, Nuke and Manson, but I didn’t see anything about Kadri 😅 usually a good sign something is in the works 💪

The bolded in this quote from Sakic sounded to me like it was about Kadri. So maybe there's a chance, depending on what Joe is willing to offer now that they saved money on goaltending.

“We’re talking,” he said. “We’ve got some time. We met with all the agents this week in Montreal, and once we get through the draft, we’re going to continue that dialogue. Hopefully, we’ll be able to make headway. … We’ve got our priorities, and then I think some players will test the market, see what’s out there for them, and see if they want to come back to us. Time will tell.”

“We’ll see how things shape up, but we have a salary cap we have got to try to manage,”

Never forget that Strickland is an absolute dumbf***

Wow this guy is truly dumb. I thought that was at least a tweet from last off season (still would have been dumb) but it was after the Avs swept the Preds and beat his Blues.

I didn't think he could sound any dumber and then I listened to his reasoning and was proven incorrect.

Thanks, yes could be about Kadri. I thought it was more about Bura and Kuemper though

It's a gamble, but if you can sign JTC to a 3.5M deal after a 32 point season, rolling the dice on Nuke should be a no brainer, IMO.
Signing JT to 3rd liner money is far different than signing Nuke to 2nd liner money. If Nuke had played like this at all before that would be different but he’d been nothing but an elite 3rd liner till last season. Very much a hindsight is 20/20 thing.

I've been operating under the assumption that Joe never really expected to bring back Kuemper or Burakovsky. Not many of us did either.

If they're prioritizing Nuke they can't offer Burky the kind of deal he'll command in UFA. I think Nate's raise, Nuke, Kadri, Lehky, and maybe even Kuemper were ahead of Burky in the priority list.

Both Nuke and/or Kadri may not have had the seasons they did without the looking at UFA and contracts upcoming.

it’s always easy to should have, would have with contracts..but there is value having guys hungry for their next deal on the roster.

I'm really worried we won't sign Nuke back. When it came out earlier we were close and somebody speculated it was in the 5 range I was pumped because I do think someone is going throw a massive bag his way.

All it takes is 1 team to think his production this year is him breaking out and believe in that going forward. He's a 27 year old 6'4 winger who's a defensive beast and just scored 34 goals in 82 games this season. His playoffs was massive. I'd be shocked if he and his agent don't go to market and see what's out there. Unless Sakic offers 6.5-7 it doesn't make sense $$ wise for Nuke to just accept 5ish right now so if he does sign for that pre FA it'll be a discount for us.

Who's to say that wasn't offered? Reportedly Sakic did offer something that was considered a lowball by Nuke's camp, so they shelved talks.

Personally I think some of the grousing about not re-upping free agents is overblown. Who's to say Nuke and Kadri have the years they had if both were already re-upped to new deals? There's something to be said about key players entering a contract year and using that as motivation.

I mean it sucks having Nuke possibly walk, but he had a fantastic playoffs and if some team is going to offer him an insane contract ($7mil + w/ term) what can you do?

This team has the best core in the league and they get the most out of players. Avs will find a way through all of this.

Yes it's hindsight, but it's also gambling. Joe gambled on JTC. Nuke wasn't putting up the numbers he did this year, but he was playing like this effort wise. He has been our hardest working, and most effective forechecker the entire time he's been here. If you think the numbers will come, you gamble.

Nothing's guaranteed of course, but Nuke has shown what kind of game he plays, even before his playoff success this year. I would trust Nuke more so than Kadri to repeat that success.
