Who's to say that wasn't offered? Reportedly Sakic did offer something that was considered a lowball by Nuke's camp, so they shelved talks.

Personally I think some of the grousing about not re-upping free agents is overblown. Who's to say Nuke and Kadri have the years they had if both were already re-upped to new deals? There's something to be said about key players entering a contract year and using that as motivation.

The thing about Nuke though is even if he's not scoring, he's providing so much to help the team given their system, with just his forechecking alone. He's so much more valuable to the Avs than he is other teams.

It was a big part of why they won the Cup, and if he leaves, they're probably not going to be able to replace him, because nobody in the NHL is really as effective at what he does on the forecheck.

Lehkonen is close but even he isn't as good. He's got the motor and the work ethic for it, but he doesn't have Nuke's size and speed to boot. That's what makes Nuke so special.

He's such a horse in all areas of the game. That kind of player is so valuable to a team, especially the Avs. He's like our version of Marian Hossa without the elite shot. And I was a big fan of Hossa too.

Yep, it's that time of the year when GM's lose their mind and money seems fake. Then in 3 months they wake up saying "what the heck did I do?"

It's like they don't look at the player they are paying compared to others. Johnny G is a good player. Not a great player. Not a franchise player. So why is he being paid like one? More than Makar? More than what 96% of the forwards in the league? Joke

Thank God for Sakic and him being able to keep his head straight and walk away from some of these contracts.
9.5 a year is insulting. How many “good“ players (but not great, and also not franchise level??) put up 115 points? 7 less points then Mcdavid, while averaging almost 5 minutes less in ice time /game. And he doesn’t even rely on a powerplay, he had 85 5v5 points (most since jagr in 96). 14 points in 12 playoff games, including a game 7 OT winner.

Come on, man. Let’s stop acting like these other teams are the boogeyman. All last offseason it was after every actual/potential Vegas move and now Tampa.

We’re the MF’in boogeyman and the team to beat! 😤

Seems to me that people are pretty composed about Nichuskin despite the real possibility that he may walk. Conversely the one that's making everyone lose their minds is the prospect of not getting a 5th round pick for Kuemper's rights
The cupboard is bare!

PS. You consistently have some of the best written posts on the board—very big fan of reading your contributions. Perhaps because of the otherwise high quality of your posts, it really bugs me to see you misspell Nichushkin every time. The middle syllable is "Choosh" and not "Choos."

If we can’t afford Nuke they definitely can’t

They could easily afford him/make room for him. Ditto Palat, I think Palat just wants an uncomfortable number from Tampa. Its smart from Tampa to not give him 6+ if that's what he is asking. Especially if they think they can get the younger and better Nichushkin for 6+ instead.

They have about $5.75M in space right now.... But simply moving Killorn would given them even more space. Not a hard move for them to make if they really wanted too. And they've certainly shown to be a franchise willing to do what it takes.

Wow I can't believe I've been misspelling his name all this time! My inner gammar-nazi is having a panic attack right now, and I'm now secretly hope "Nichushkin" walks so I never have to remember this embarrassing mistake ever again. :eek3:

Seriously though, thanks for the kind words and for pointing that out. The new spelling will take some getting used to! :DD

Russian transliteration is tough sometimes. When writing in Finnish it should technically be Nitšuškin.

I guess I wouldn’t be too shocked if Tampa pulled something like this off, but after next season they need to re-sign half their defense (Sergachev, Cernak, Foote, among others) plus Cirelli and Colton without too many quality prospects on the way. Signing Nuke this off season would guarantee them losing one major or multiple major pieces. If they wanna go all in for one final season with this core I guess they could do it.

People need to calm down on these Nichushkin takes. If you had two more weeks you'd talk him up to 11 mil.
Yup. A year on from now, we are basically going to have 45% of our cap tied to 4 players (MacK, Landeskog, Makar, Rantanen). We really have to start being careful with every contract after that. Is Nuke worth 6m if he continues to play like this season? Absolutely. Is he worth that if he plays like he did during his first 2 years here? No. Can't afford it if he won't hit 0,5PPG, not even with the other intangibles he provides.

If his number starts with a 6 I'm going to be torn. If it's around 5 it's good. Under 5, it's a great deal.

Two weeks ago: "Yeah Nichushkin should come in at 5-5.5."
A week ago: "6-6.5."
This Wednesday: "Someone will absolutely give him 7-8."
Next week: "He can easily get 9-10."

Never forget that Strickland is an absolute dumbf***

Defense is the strongest part lol

Remember when grub walked, and saad walked, and Donskoi got taken in the expansion draft...

Basically everyone here thought we were toast I was one of the only people saying I thought we could be even better You can check the history on it.

Here we are a year later Avs are cup champs.

True. Felt like we took few steps backwards.

It's obviously been league max since he signed his last extension.

The biggest indicator of them going all-in this year would be if they buyout Myers.

Doing that would free up $2.55m along with adding $616k in cap credit, so they'd have an extra $3m to play with (though more like $2m after replacing Myers), giving them over $7m to spend on an UFA forward instead of ~$5.1m.

That buyout would add ~$660k in cap penalty to their 2023-24 roster though, making it that much tougher to re-sign RFA's. Adding another big contract this year would also make it hard to re-sign guys next year as well, and probably force them to lose a key player or two - most certainly Killorn and probably one more.
