The idea that all these departures are guys being fired or acrimonious is probably a little bit off. Scouts do from time to time move on because that’s what they want to do. At least some of those moving on it’s because of greener pastures. Morehouse apparently is going to be Director of Amateur Scouting for the Sharks which is kind of a big deal.
For sure, and I wouldn’t at all be surprised if some by loyalty was kind of pissed at Drury for ‘happily’ taking over after Gorton was sacked, or for certain people being showed the door and so forth.
But when Drury took over one of the very few things he said was that he wanted to build a professional/winning organization or something like that. Could be a cliché, but when everyone in the organization except the European scouts are fired, leaves, not renewed — guys that Drury have worked very closely with a for a really long time — something is going on that is for sure. I am sure that something is a bit of everything. But one of those things is probably that Drury haven’t been super found of how things always have been run.
I just want to see a higher level of accountability at the management levels. We have had a large organization with a lot of quality people who have done a lot of good things. And there will be mistakes. But there have been too many repeat big blunders. From rushing the kids over super fast to turn professional, to the extreme subpar performance of HFD, to horrible scouting decisions at the pro level, to the coaching mess in NY, to how young forwards have been developed and what not.
It’s individual decisions spread over a ton of hands, some will say. And what about every great aspect of this organization? How Ds have been developed? But from my POV, the extents and consistency of bone headed unprofessional decisions just shows how a fundamental lack of accountability and sufficient professionalism have not been there. Like you follow the NHL closely, you will see a very very clear trend how it seems to be very risky to rush kids to the NHL. We know for a fact that we tried to yank KAM from college already two years before he came here. Fox and Pionk where patiently developed, thanks to their own decision. Schneider is saved by the U20 ban for CHL players in the AHL. Another one that was a real steal, Carl Hagelin. 4 years in college. Rush these kids to the NHL/AHL when they are 17-18 with a ton of pressure on them — what would the results be? And there are very logical reasons for kids being rushed developing poorly. Just count the number of quality practice time in the AHL and compare it to like college or Europe, is it 1/3? So why where these really poor decisions made? Because the kids we rushed were “1st round” picks, even higher picks. Surely, a different standard apply to them? All that just really shows that there have been a significant shortage of being in touch with reality.
