This is a ridiculous comment. Windsor was definitely a deeper team than Flint, but Johnston was the best player in the OHL last year. Othmann also had a fantastic year, and there’s no need to compare the two. Othmann was a good pick.

Being upset that the Rangers didn’t take him is also ridiculous since he was considered a reach where Dallas took him since he was primarily expected to be a second rounder. Johnston just took a massive leap forward and vastly outperformed his expectations last season.

Lots of players were hurt that draft because of partial or no seasons due to Covid where if they couldn't get on a European team they just didn't play or only played very little. There was a lot of guessing going on. I don't think Johnston played much at all and Othmann went over to Switzerland helped out by connections established by his dad when he played and I think he had dual citizenship. Johnston went under the radar quite a bit.

Gagner and Ryan Murray PTOs please
I would love Sam Gagner. His dad was a Rangers draft pick. would be a cool story. I proposed to sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal. He can still play. Rather have a physical defenseman. If Jets traded Logan Stanley, that would be a great option. Rangers need more size and grit that can skate. another Lindgren type would be nice.. They have enough skating defneseman

Rangers at Team Canada

I could be wrong but to me this doesn’t bode well from Othmann or Cuylle being able to play on the right

Great for them and great for tho

Three prospects on Team Canada is pretty neat. Feels like the Rangers have been USA and Euro heavy for so long.

Yeah. It's been quite a while for a lot of these. An overview:

Last time we had an American was 2021 (Brett Berard and Hunter Skinner)

Last time we had a Czech, was 2018 (Filip Chytil)

Last time we had a Finn, was 2016 (Aleksi Saarela)

Last time we had a Slovak, was 2013 (Peter Čerešňák)

Last time we had representation on 5 teams, was 2008 (Czechs Tomáš Kundrátek, David Květoň, Slovak Dávid Skokan, Swede Carl Hagelin, American Bobby Sanguinetti and Russians Alexei Cherepanov and Artem Anisimov)

Last time we had 3 Canadians, was 2007 (Marc Staal, Marc-André Cliché, Tom Pyatt).

The last time we had 7 prospects in total, was 1984 (Tony Granato, Tomas Sandström, Jan Karlsson, Peter Andersson, Vesa Salo, Randy Heath, Dave Gagner)

The Rangers had 9 in 1983 and post that tournament they drafted another three.

1981 Rangers draft picks who played in 1983 tournament--Mark Morrison (Can) James Patrick (Can) John Van Biesbrouck (USA)
1982 Rangers draft picks who played in 1983 tournament--Tomas Sandstrom (Swe) Simo Saarinen (Fin) Tony Granato (USA) Andy Otto (USA) Jan Karlsson (Swe) Kelly Miller (USA)

From that tournament Rangers drafted Peter Andersson (Swe) that summer of 1983. They drafted Raimo Helminen (Fin) in 1984 and Sergei Nemchinov (Rus) in 1990.

Otto played for a Netherlands Div. 3 team last year at the age of 59.

Players drafted afterwards don't count as they did not represent the Rangers. Kakko at the 2019 WJC and Lafrenière at the 2020 WJC don't count either.

Yes, I see what the confusion is now.

My point was the last time we had at least 7 prospects. Not what the most were in total. I didn't go back that far.

Will Cuylle, LW, Windsor Spitfires (NYR): After spending a portion of the 2020-21 season in the AHL, Cuylle returned to the Windsor Spitfires last season and nearly doubled his goal and point totals from his second OHL season back in 2019-20. Cuylle scored 43 goals and had 80 points before going on a monumental postseason run that saw him score 31 points in 25 postseason contests as the Spitfires fell just short of the OHL title. At 6-foot-4, 209 pounds, Cuylle is one of a few big power-forward types for Team Canada. He was part of the winter team and could see his role expanded even further this time around.

Brennan Othmann, LW, Flint Firebirds (NYR): After not making Canada in the winter, it was no surprise to see Othmann make the roster for the summer after he put up 50 goals in 66 games for Flint. He has a sniper’s shot and gets it off from anywhere in just about any way you can ask. He might have a chance to edge his way into a top-six role if he’s able to bring that scoring touch with him to the World Juniors.

Dylan Garand, G, Kamloops Blazers (NYR): Kamloops had an incredible season and Garand was a major part of it. He was the CHL Goalie of the year after posting a .925 save percentage over 45 starts, going 34-9-1 between the pipes. In the playoffs, he was even better, with a .933 save percentage over 17 contests. Garand lacks the size of Cossa, but he is a technically sound goalie who doesn’t beat himself. He has a good chance to be the No. 1 the whole way for Canada, as long as he plays to his standard.

First USA player discussed:
"Brett Berard, LW, Providence College (NYR): A member of the 2021 team that won gold, Berard was a depth piece for that iteration of Team USA, but he’s going to be a central offensive figure for the Americans this time around. His unrelenting motor and clever play with the puck on his stick allowed Berard to produce 38 points in 36 games with Providence last year. His experience and style of play will make him a very important piece for this U.S. side."

Thats a lot of players for the club. Wonder if any others teams have that many or more in the tourney?

Detroit has 9 players at the WJC. Minny has 8. Most of the rest of the league don't have more than 4.

9 goals in this first Czech vs Slovakia game and neither of our players had a point? Busts :(
Looks like a change in scoring. Sykora initially got a secondary assist on the first goal. He stopped a Czech rush in the defensive zone and got the puck out to a teammate who sent it ahead to Petrovsky who broke in and beat the goalie. Both assists removed. Later, Sykora blocked a shot on the PK with his inner thigh, not far from...OMG!

It does but that perception can also be skewed by how much lower the bar is to make the WJC on a roster like Slovakia or Switzerland than it is to make Canada's team.

But I agree in the sense that we've definitely been USA WJC heavy, even taking into consideration the varied levels.
