Going into pre-season, I basically viewed Brown and Kostin the same. Kostin has been what I thought he always was, but Brown to his credit has showed up and showing the coaches that he should be apart of the opening night group.

Ouch. I mean, he’s just being honest, and I agree with him, but ouch.

Kostin better have a heck of a game tonight (which admittedly won’t be easy paired with Bolduc and McGing on the 4th) to stay in the picture. His chances are running very short now and his competition is very clearly currently beating him.

My guess is that by the end of camp, he’s either essentially given away for very little in a trade or put on waivers.

That is admittedly, not exactly a hot take at this point.

I think if Kostin shows Chief the effort he needs to see he should still start on our 4th line, at least until Toropchenko is healthy. There's still a chance he could salvage his career and become an effective bottom six player.

Just Kidding

Any particular development we should be aware of?
We should've drafted Robertson instead of Kostin, that was the only reference. And it's not like we didn't scout the OHL, so just one of those scouting misses. Seriously, it could've been Reaves+2nd for Sunny+Robertson.

Would be interesting but I think Robertson would be a better fit with ROR as his footspeed doesnt match up with Kyrou

I wonder if there is a young defenseman on a team we could swap for Kostin considering the injury to Perunovich. Not that I would expect much in return but maybe there is a team with a surplus of d-men who could use an extra forward. We have the depth to make up for it in the short term, but we're one more injury on the blueline from being in trouble.

This could have been discussed but I cannot find any information on it. How is everyone watching games this year? We have the Bally Sports app through ATT but after looking at the calendar on the STL Blues website, it doesn't seem like a lot are televised or something. I know a good streaming place but I like to sit and watch it on my TV rather than my computer if at all possible

Chychrun rumors are heating up…for better or worse, I expect Army to strike now. Just feels like a move he makes.
I still don't see the blues beating out other teams offers. The sens have better prospects, the leafs are probably really desperate, blue jackets have better prospects, kings have better prospects, and the oilers are dumb enough to offer them everything

I think whichever team acquires Chychrun will never see a return on their investment to justify the cost.

army doesn't make those moves. like everyone he makes mistakes, but he doesn't tend to make emotional moves.
True. I can’t argue that. But with the “window being open”, 2 LD going down long term in a week, and ARZ open to cap dumps…

Again, hope we don’t overpay in the scenario he makes this move. But he probably doesn’t

I infer something from the reported continued Chychrun interest: Armstrong prefers another top-4 defenseman, even if he has to ultimately settle for a depth defender. None of the top 4 defensemen would be heading out in a Chychrun trade. if your 4th and 5th defensemen are Leddy and Krug and Binnington is on playoff form, now you are a Cup contender with the offense (at least with 90 and 91 still here). Whether or not Chychrun the specific player is being brought down overall by injuries is an open question, but Doug Armstrong sees the logic of adding such a player if that player can be healthy.

When Bill and Doug discuss this potential framework, the 1st would be a given and the question is which prospect does Bill covet enough to keep the Blues in the bidding? Is it Neighbors, who I don't think Doug will budge on? Or is it Hofer, if Bill believes he will be a #1 goalie in the NHL?

The twin injuries of Scandella and Perunovich have brought a ton of clarity to the Blues' possible paths this season at the same time the Coyotes ask is reportedly coming down a bit. Hence the return of speculation.

At this juncture I hope y’are right. Guess I am expecting an overreaction move.

Neither of the LD who went down were expected to contribute anything close to what you would want/need out of Chychrun given the steep price to get him. Neither of Perunovich nor Scandella was expected to be anything more than a bottom pair guy this year. The absolute most that the organization might have been hoping/expecting from them is for the bottom pair to be Scandella-Perunovich. You don't make a panic acquisition of a top pair (or high end 2nd pair) D man in response to your bottom pair plans being blown up.

I don't think we are all the way out on Chychrun. But since the Leddy acquisition, any Chychrun move would have made Scandella and Perunovich fully expendable and pushed one of the still healthy LD down to the 3rd pair. That might be a bit more appealing today than 3 weeks ago, but not so much that Army should be panicking. Our top 4 is still healthy and we're paying Mikkola $1.8M to be a 3rd pair guy.

I don’t see us as serious pursuers of Chycrun. I don’t doubt we are in at periphery, but to me Leddy trade signaled we weren’t going to pay price for Chycrun.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't rule out a move, and if Army does make a move, I don't think there will be much lead up to it. I don't think the insiders are going to be reporting about talks between us are really heating up, I think the deal will just be announced.

I'm not sure if Calgary is going to move a defenseman, but I think they've been rumored to, and they sort of have a guy at each tier that could make sense. Hanifin as a big-time target, Kylington as another 2nd pair type quality target, and Valimaki, who could be a Kostin type swap thing.

I agree.

If I had to put money on it, I'd bet that we've made our last best offer and it felt well short of their ask. I think it is likely not the best offer they've gotten and almost certainly won't be the best offer they will get. However, if they circle back to us and say that they would accept what we previously offered, I do think that we would still go through with it even though we signed Leddy. I think the odds of that are extremely low.
