Fulfilling the contract he signed isn't why he's getting hate. It's for how he left. Just like Tavares and Staz.

I don't consider it very believable at all that he was wrestling with staying when he probably got close to or exactly the contract demands he was asking Calgary for, and then signed in Columbus for much cheaper. If he was still considering staying it would have been purely about the money, not anything to do with Calgary or staying with the team that drafted him.
But how did he string them along? I don’t think he publicly ever said he was going to be a “Flame for life” or mentioned he was definitely re signing there or anything along those lines.

Maybe I missed that but I genuinely don’t see how he did anything wrong.

"If [Brad Treliving] and the owners are happy with the way I’ve played here the past six, seven years. It’s something we can figure out this upcoming summer, I’d love to do that. I love the city of Calgary. I love playing here. I don’t think I’ve ever once said I haven’t wanted to be here, the guys in the locker room are great in there. I’ve always enjoyed my time here."

Pro Hockey Rumors

“It’s everywhere. It’s such a great city to play in. I mean, my next-door neighbours, pretty sure they were shovelling my snow all year just to get me back.

“You go to Starbucks, you go out to eat, everyone is so welcoming and really wants me back here. And it’s great. That’s what you want to hear.

“That’s what you want people to think of you, that they want you on their team. It’s a little overwhelming at times, but it’s great to hear. I love it.”

“Obviously, Calgary has a special place in my heart,” said Gaudreau, 28, who is slated to be an unrestricted free agent July 13.

“I’ve been part of this organization for 11 years now. Ever since Day 1 I got here, the fans, the organization, my teammates, even you guys (the media). Sometimes, when I’m playing bad, you guys give me a hard time. But that’s alright. But everything about this city I love. My wife loves it here.

“You guys can tell on Twitter, my uncle, my dad, my mom, my sisters, my brother, everyone loves Calgary. It’s a special place in our heart and we love it here, so we’ll see what happens.

“I’ll sit down with my agent this week sometime and figure out what’s best for me and my family.”

“I didn’t sit in the locker room and keep my jersey on or stare up in the stands,” said Gaudreau.

“That’s something that I didn’t really think of. I do have a big decision and we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks, but I love it here. I love the fans. I love the city. But I never really had that moment where I was like, ‘This is it for me.’”

And there’s also been a ton of rumors over the last 2 years he wanted to get traded out east or go there in FA. If I some random dude in Denver know about that than the Flames org certainly does. I mean it definitely sucks but it certainly sounds like some stuff in his personal life changed things.

Might go out East and basically deciding that you want to go out East while acting like you might stay are two completely different things. We hear rumors of players wanting to return home when they never do, all the time. Joe Sakic's entire career involved rumors of him going back to Vancouver.

Treliving would have been in the best position to gauge whether or not he might stay, and there's a reason he didn't trade him, and continued to negotiate with him until the last minute. Because they strung him along too.

Even if he Johnny told him that he was leaving this summer he wasn't going to trade him. Was their best shot at a cup in a while

Didn't Gaudreau/others say he wanted to re-sign last Summer but management didn't want to?

I feel like his wife's pregnancy completely changed things. If you're having your first child, you're going to want family around.

Then again, he chose Columbus where his family definitely does not live so who tf knows lol.

I mean CGY had YEARS to figure out how serious those rumors/thoughts were. And IIRC they were considering trading him at one point. It sucks for CGY and the fans to lose him but it wasn’t nearly as simple as him stringing them along to leave him.

Your description here and his public comments suggest otherwise IMO. At least Tkachuk was honest with Treliving that he didn't want to re-sign.

His public comments were well known. But everyone except Calgary fans knew they were nothing but lip service. And after he wasn’t allowed to make more money than giordano on his second contract. That soured him on the “business”.

Meh. Sports is one of the only professions in the world where you're told which organization you're going to work for rather than being able to choose until you become UFA. The earlier the better IMO.
Should we remove the draft also?

I like roster consistency and a balanced playing field. The less restrictions the more the big markets are favored.

But I agree, it's a matter of taste.

Yea who needs good drafting, good developing and a good fanbase when all you need is to be in a city near the ocean with low taxes to ensure endless success. Great for the game!

Yeah, no. This is just wrong lol

Well, no, the draft is fine but the UFA age now is also fine. 31 is WAY too old of an age.

I was not advocating for 31yo. It could have been lowered but less drastically than what happen. It was a huge win for the NHLPA.

Was reading an article about teams up against the cap and it was discussing the Lightning and saying that while they are currently 7M over the cap, they'll get most of it back due to Brent Seabrook. Not that I would expect any player in Brent's situation to do so, but he had an NMC...the Team Choas in me really wants to see an injured player with an NMC block a trade intended to use him to give cap relief to another team.

Maybe Seabrook has less taxes or some other benefit from collecting a paycheck in Tampa instead of Chicago.

He doesn't. He has a girlfriend and she is a German Olympic athlete, Anna Seidel.

She was even there with him at the NHL awards. Lemieux is his agent who was there as well. You probably have mistaken her as Anna was sitting next to Claude.
it is what I read

It's not always about the money. Maybe Matthew Tkachuk just likes Florida and wants to live next to the Ocean. Calgary was Ok for him but he seems to prefer big city next to the Ocean. I can understand that. Some people love to live next to the ocean.
yes

While I totally understand why Calgary fans are upset, Gaudreau did absolutely nothing wrong. He has every right to sign or not sign with whomever he wants. That’s the whole point of free agency. Tkachuk was also completely up front and honest about not wishing to sign long-term, and the Flames acted accordingly. This is more on Treliving and the Flames making way too many mistakes over the years and not entering into a proper rebuild the first time around. Maybe Gaudreau and Tkachuk leave anyway but there aren’t as many lost years between then and now influencing their decision.

Imagine if the local media would have asked him early in the season if he intends to leave and he would have said, "yes, this will be my last year here." That would turn into an incredibly long season, assuming he doesn't get traded.

You don't have to say that publicly, you just say it privately to your GM so he doesn't get f***ed. Like Seth Jones, for example.

Or you can inform him at the very last minute to make sure that he loses his franchise player for nothing. Like Gaudreau and Tavares.

Maybe Gaudreau simply didn't want to get traded with one year to UFA to avoid having to unsettle his family twice. It's within his rights to see out the contract without committing, and it's up to the GM to read between the lines if the player remains unsigned.

It’s Trelivings job to sort that out.

I don't feel bad for any GM that gets burned by sitting on a pending free agent. I want MOAR trades!!!
