All the Sabres need is for Levi or UPK to become a starter and the Sabres are set to become a legit playoff team. They have every important position filled other than G.
Well they also need a little better structure defensively, they still rely way too much on their goalie to hold the lead. Whether that’s Granato or someone else, they need to learn it.

Amazing how important Matthias Samuelsson is to their success. That swoon they suffered after October coincided with his injury, and they’ve been surging since he returned to the lineup.

Sabres have all the pieces and then some. Tage + Cozens at center, Dahlin + Power on defense. Those 4 alone should be enough.

You can also add Quinn who should become a legit 1st line winger.

We'll see if they can put it together but I'd not say that Tage can't win a cup in Buffalo. That team is loaded.

Definitely. But I think that’s just also part of being a young team as well. Took the Avs a couple years for the structure to get where it is today. Now whether or not Granato is the guy to make that happen is TBD.

The Leafs have been unpleasantly good this season, but at least Edmonton and Vancouver suck enough to provide entertainment value.
Hilarious the Leafs went out and got goalies cheaper than what Holland paid Campbell and both have outplayed him by a significant margin.

Next 1-2 years are pivotal for the Sabres.

If they make the playoff and continue to improve, they'll be the next powerhouse and it'll be on the backs of their young core. Assuming their young players progress as expected, their management would have to colossally f*** up as they have too much talent and depth on that team to not win anything.
I'll believe it when I see it. We're talking about Buffalo here.

Because the Leafs are actually a good defensive team. They have been one for a few seasons now. When healthy, their D-corps is actually decent, but above that they play a good defensive structure.

Edmonton has neither. Holland has failed to address the former, head coach has failed to address the structure with the team. And it starts from the top. Compare McDavids and Draisaitls defensive game to the one played by the top players in Toronto. Night and day difference. And not in a good way.

As usual, other than a few outliers, teams and structures are far more important than the goalie.

Unless the goalie is legit playing like a sieve.

It is always hard to win a Cup. Sometimes even well built teams don't. With the young group that Buffalo has, they should have all the necessary pieces if Levi transitions to the NHL well.

This is how Buffalo looks at center...

all off-season I was told Murray was cooked and samsonov sucked… sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes

I don't think anyone in the hockey world except Dubas expected Murray to be good again.

You could’ve said the same thing about the Avs 4/5 years ago.

Granted not to say I think Buffalo will win a cup. Even if everything goes right the chances are minimal.

I mean I’m shocked Murray’s worked out. I assumed the injuries had done a number on his body. Samsonov I thought was a worthy risk, he’s got tons of talent.

Well, Holland addressed the defense, just in the worst possible way. Gave Darnell Nurse more money than Cale Makar makes (!!!!!)

Kinda sad that Draisaitl and McDavid have never, not once had a truly great defenseman on the roster with them.

I’m also flabbergasted at how poorly Ken Holland of all people can’t fill out a goddamned depth chart. It’s insanely easy to find good defensive forwards for cheap. Sakic found one on waivers years ago (Nieto) and C-Mac literally did it again this year (Hunt). Like, just get guys like that until you draft/develop better players.

It should also be noted that the Oilers have one of the smallest analytics departments in the league. So many teams emulated the Red Winga front office (Avs included) and it’s the guy who got all the credit for that who inexplicably didn’t.

I honestly thought Barrie would have looked so much better on the Oilers than he has
