I remember us playing Petersen. He looked like an AHL goalie. He's paid how much?

If I'm the Kings I'm trying to make a deal and make noise as soon as possible. I still don't understand why some people think there a team of the future. Quick is 37. Kopitar is 36 and still playing a massive role. Doughty is 33. Danault almost 30. Even Fiala is already 26. There not this young and upcoming team even if they have some nice young players/prospects. Even someone like Vilardi who's breaking out this year is the same age as Makar.

It is their pool as the reason as a team of the future. Lots of nice pieces if you like like Byfield.

Kings should be a cautionary tale of re-tooling too late and then aging out. They won their last cup with similar ages to MacK and Makar as Kopi and Doughty. I actually think the Kings have shifted over well the last 3-4 seasons and gotten a bunch of nice pieces…. But really shows how hard retooling/rebuilding on the fly really is.

Yeah but a bunch of there main pieces are currently very old/in there primes. Once the prospects are ready to go they'll have a bunch of pieces to replace or guys will be aging as you like to point out. A huge chunk of there current core is older/similar in age to the Avs for example.

Honestly it would be a massive win if MacKinnon/Rants/Nuke etc. could age like Kopitar/Doughty and be a game changer but obviously not something you can count on happening. Kopitar was still a 1C at 34 years old.

I see the ages not ever really matching up with the Kings unless Byfield breaks out later this year and is really going by next.

Kopi did age relatively very well and was even elite offensively in a couple of those years... Danault really helped him last year by taking some defensive loads off of him. Even as good as Kopi and Doughty have aged though, the Kings have found it incredibly difficult to re-tool with them around and on their well earned contracts. It is just very hard to win as cores age and they get out of the value contracts signed as RFAs.

That's kind of the point tho. If they don't ever line up than what's special about the Kings? Even Fiala is similar in age to MacKinnon/Rants and signed long term. Danault will be 30 soon and is on the books for another 4 years. Kempe is 26 and signed for 3 more years. Doughty has what like 4 more years at 10+ mill? Is that not similar to the Avs where you have a bunch of your core in there primes/signed long term?

Yeah no doubt. Things went sideways for them really quickly as well. Still if MacKinnon ages like Kopitar or even Rants/Nuke can age similar to that I think that would give the team alot more hope assuming Byram can stay healthy. Having a 1C/1D and whatever Byram ends up is alot easier to build around than if everyone ages poorly and its curtains no matter what you do.

Nothing is really special if they don’t click… running the risk of simply being a. Solid playoff team and nothing more. They need Byfield and Clarke to click to be more.

Aging well is always preferable. Kings are proof that even aging well may not be enough. All and all, significant reason why the Avs need the chips in the middle now.

There is 11m on that deal left after this season.. nobody is touching it.

Yeah this is one of those desperate waiver drops hoping to be rid of the contract but no one is going to help them out. I know there was a SV% by season posted above but the underlying numbers actually have him as above average last season. Maybe it helped that Quick was taking the no. 1 responsibilities however both goalies are doing poorly statistically this season. If there's a bar for being waived Quick is getting close to it as well numbers wise. When it's both goalies doing poorly usually there's something more going on than "goalie is bad".

Which was my original point of why I don't get why some lump them in with the Sens/Devils etc. They are built more like the Avs than they are those teams. Better prospect pool and worse high end talent but a majority of there core is ready to win right now. Makes more sense to try and win now than wait 3-4 seasons when your core will be aging out.

It honestly wasn't even aging with the Kings either. They missed the playoffs with a 27 year old Kopi, 25 year old Doughty right after the cup. That would literally be like the Avs missing the playoffs this season. You could honestly argue the Kings missed the playoffs 2/3 seasons and aging didn't have a huge impact on any of it. Kopi/Doughty were still in the primes. Toffoli was still young. Carter was still getting up there but still performed well. Guess Dustin Brown.

I’d say aging had a huge part of it, but it is never one thing. Some key players (Brown, Gaborik, Richards, Reghr, Stoll) couldn’t maintain their levels of play past their peaks and any regression from the top guys couldn’t make up for it. They also couldn’t continue to pay for depth once the big contracts hit for Kopi and Doughty.

Button just had Michkov listed at 5th overall on his draft board. Has the kid fallen or is this just Button with a hot take?
