What a weird coaching staff for VAN. Tocchet, who isn't good, as the HC and then two former defensemen as his inexperienced assistants. Foote has done some consulting work with the Avs but his stint as HC in Kelowna didn't last too long so I have no idea how he'll be. Gonchar was pretty well regarded when he was coaching with the Pens IIRC.

I do agree wholeheartedly that Boudreau has done nothing wrong and deserves all the accolades for how he’s handled it but to me I still don’t like how they push for soundbytes. He is a human and of course he cares and gets emotional. They are well aware that he is well aware, yet keep asking him to comment on it, likely looking for him to call out the managemen (or get an emotional byte to play) yet he wouldn’t take the bait.

I don’t know what else you’d have them do. They are not going to ignore the 500-pound gorilla in the room, nor should they. This is not the time for softball questions.

Again, if the Canucks wanted to avoid this they could’ve yanked his availability, but they didn’t. Also, Bruce could’ve opted out, but he didn’t. Standing there answering questions made him look like the hero in all this and he is imminently more appealing for future coaching jobs as a result. If anything, the media did him a favor because they presented the unvarnished his side of the story, unvarnished.

I fully agree sports media is seriously flawed and they pull stupid shit all the time. This is not an example of that though. The only villains here are in suits walking around Canucks headquarters.

And Foote was a consultant during some pretty shitty times for the Avs.

McDavid is a freak... But this should also be a good reminder of just how low scoring was not too long ago and that you really can't compare a 70 point player today to a 70 point player 8 years ago.


And why the arguments of players not regressing because they were a 70 point player in 2015 and are still a 70 point player today, don't hold up at all.

It's a simple concept that suprisingly many don't seem to understand.

Old dudes are not constantly having career years and not declining, the scoring has just exploded making every skaters numbers look way better than in decades.

They should have asked him, they also should have moved on instead of hounding that one subject every post game. That’s what I’m saying. Get your bit and move on, but they couldn’t move on and we’re baiting him, or at least attempting to.

I’d have them not beat a dead horse, literally. He was a dead man walking in terms of his job. Ask him, fine, but don’t drone on about it in a q&a situation… let the talk shows take care of that and speculate away, not put him through the ringer on the situation by taking questions he’s sensitive on. “Hardball” questions are not had by asking Boudreau himself about his imminent demise over and over. Hardball questions would be to go after management and ask them what they were thinking making this public, hounding management about why they are so bad, asking management why they thought myers, miller etc. were good ideas. Not drag the coach through the mud on his way out.
 
Watching Tocchet's presser. He talks about how pace is important to stay effective and play all 4 lines, 6 defensemen and even Crosby doesn't play more than 20 minutes.

Wonder what Bednar thinks of that.

He also had a very interesting point about the talent level being at an all time high but game planning hasn't caught up yet.

(That explains today's high scoring.)

Are you saying context is needed before saying a 28 year old injury prone C hasn't recovered to his 20-25 year old value?

We will have some painful years in the future when this core falls off, but it's better to have them all at once like the Avs will. A few of our current young players could be vets in the next core.
