Are Florida actually going to stumble ass backwards into the playoffs after having tried failing several times this season?

Between the Cats, the Pens, and the Isles, ain't nobody want that final wild card seed.

Such an interesting juxtaposition--the top of the East is so insanely good, even the middle is fantastic. The tail end though? Mediocre at best.

This as opposed to the Western Conference which is all crap all the time.

Really though, what was his alternative? Pretty sure he DID ride the hot hand with Vladar but even when he was "hot" he still wasn't great. The team was never going to succeed with Vladar as the starter.

The only way they could've gotten by with okay-ish goaltending from Vladar is if their finishing as upper-tier, which is wasn't. The Devils and the Avs (last year) are about the only teams I can think of who have excelled despite less-than-stellar goaltending, and in the latter case, Kuemper was actually a lot better than we remember, he just had a crap start and finish to the regular season, then got poked in the eye.
Confidence is crazy important when it comes to the position of goaler. Markstrom looks like somebody that has been defeated and has been that way since Oilers destroyed him. Vladar on the other hand was playing out of his mind and in a big part of that was because of how confidently he was playing. Thinking you "can" stop a shot, means that you "will" stop a shot. Sutter rarely played Vladar for long-term stretches. I think there was a week around Feb-ish if I remember where Vladar got like 3-4 games in a row and then he went back to the rotational aspect of Markstrom gets 2 and then Daniel gets 1.

People are relying too much on goaltending on HFB with Calgary though, if you can't win games with more than a single goal then you're asking yourself for bad things to happen, which takes place in hockey. Things like a bad bounce off a ref, a weak defensive play, a forced play with the puck that leads to a turnover, a bad error in the offensive zone, etc. Goalers are there to stop mistakes, absolutely, but not all of their issues is because of Markstrom/Vladar IMO.

It is near impossible to win with sub .900 goaltending 5v5. That is what Calgary has gotten. Only worse team is San Jose. The closest 'good' team to them is LA who is over 1% higher. They also had massive goaltending issues... since they've worked to solve them at the deadline, they are 11-3-2 since. Calgary would have a very similar result if they suddenly got .920+ goaltending. The issues run a bit deeper than the net... but Markstrom is problem #1 in Calgary by a mile. He's mentally broken and you never know if that gets fixed.

Just because somebody "sues" somebody doesn't mean it is justified. TheHockeyGuy goes in-depth with some of the issues that Phoenix is suing Tempe on and a lot of them are unfounded like sound zoning violations or something for apartments which are like a meter within the airport zone or something. Ones that won't win in an actual justice system, it's a money grab. Of course, it is very "American" to sue somebody back who sues you originally because you want yourself to look like a "victim" in all of this.

It's more likely that counter-suits are to make the other party think twice before proceeding since they also have something at risk.

Off topic but not sure where else to ask. When Gary B finally decides to step down, he is 70, are the owners going to just promote Bill Daly or will they actually do a thorough recruitment and try to get the best candidate possible? I understand the role is to be a yes man and public whipping boy for the owners, but Gary has squandered a lot of chances to grow the popularity of the game, which would ultimately increase revenue.

Once the decision was made they'd leave plenty of time to groom a crony.

I'm dead serious here: If it ain't Daly, it could very well be Peter Chiarelli. I won't be shocked in the slightest if that happens.

BTW, you're sadly mistaken if you think Bettman is merely a whipping boy/yes man to the owners. He wields a TON of power. He's not merely a puppet--a great deal of dumb policy/culture in hockey is due to him, Daly, Campbell, and the rest of his horde.

Side note: I heard on a recent 31 Thoughts pod that there was a mini-coup (or still might be one underway) in the AHL trying to oust recently-appointed commissioner Scott Howson. Don't know if that's still bearing any fruit or even why some teams are even mad at him.

I just can't make out who the biggest moron is in this current brouhaha in Arizona. I also don't understand why Phoenix gives a rat's ass about the Coyotes and whatever they intend to do in Tempe.

Man if the Avs really do decide to unload Toews a la Barrie, PLD should be a top target. Don't care if he wants to be a Hab. Convince that guy to stay.

How much would PLD cost to convince, if it was only Toews going out I don't think we could even afford that. Toews+Newhook?

Avs can't afford him but he's literally the best fit for a 2C we can hope for. Style, age, size, production...etc. I also don't believe that he's the primadonna that some people think he is but that's another story.

That said, if we were to ship Girard somewhere, Winnipeg would probably be high on list of the possible destinations. They have a hard time keeping their players and signing UFA's so a decent dman on a long term contract would probably be welcomed. I bet they'd prefer Girard and his contract over Toews (who'd likely walk in a year).

I think we could afford him but LOC would be our most expensive player in the bottom 6.

To get PLD you have to strip from the wings, defense or both gif cap space. He’s an entitled ass, but a good one

Gotta love the dedication of NHL staff this time of year. Still haven't updated player stats from the Avs (or Oilers) games. They probably all went to bed before they ended.
It boggles the mind that this is not automated. The AHL updates players stats during games! :amazed:
