I wouldn't trade Byram myself. I get that he's a little redundant at the moment with the elite D we have on the team but I still see him having really high upside that I don't want to let go of. I think the direction hockey is moving, defensemen will have an even larger role in the game. A guy like him fits our system perfectly, fits the team mentality, and will be worth potentially much more than a #2 pick in an average (so I've heard) draft soon enough if he can stay healthy.

Interesting, bednar was quoted saying he’s loved newhooks game in mid March and again in mid april. The preds bottom 6 is full of massive bodies and the hit totals are a clear indication of that. It was the smarter move to have a physical NAK play when we know the scoring won’t be a problem against a second string or third string goalie.
😂
He loves AHL level slugs more.

That would be a brilliant move, but I am 99% sure Avs as a front office group would have no idea that is something they could do.

No probably not. The idea of getting a high end 2C on an ELC for a couple years would be the type of thing that potentially extends the window.

But I doubt New Jersey considers it either. I forgot they have Luke Hughes and I'm sure the concussion concerns are enough to keep them from considering it as well.

They definitely need to do something about the 2C situation though. We had arguably the 2nd best 2C in the league this year with the way Kadri played and we simply can't go from him to Newhook or JTC as the 2C and expect to have any success next year.

Byram is the guy who's going to replace Toews after he walks in a couple of years.

In other news, Jeff Marek said in today's podcast that the Avs were planning to go after Filip Forsberg if they couldn't sign Landeskog last year.

He wasn't speculating, he was really stating it as a fact (which is out of character for him) and was wondering if the Avs would do something now that he's UFA.

Edit: skip to 31:15

If we lose all three of Nuke, Kadri and Bura, then yeah. 2nd line can't be Lehkonen - Newhook - Compher.

The issue is Forsberg might want $9m and there’s no way we can offer him that even if Nuke Kadri, Manson and Bura walk.

I wonder if they could get Reilly Smith on a decent contract as as Burakovsky replacement, coming off a knee injury at 31?

They could probably afford Forsberg at like $7M.

But any higher then that and he's probably not worth it for us.

It's too bad Newhook didn't do more to confidently suggest he could be a 2C though because a Nuke/Newhook/Forsberg could have been a solid 2nd line if Newy showed he could handle it.

I can see the Avs going after a high end 3C to play 2C then have him flanked by Nichushkin and Forsberg.

Lundell is another guy I want.

Not that Florida is shopping him by any means but if the get dumped in the first round here, gotta imagine they will make a big move for Defense and we could have a couple guys available.

I wouldn't mind grabbing Laughton - best case he becomes our #2C, worst case he's our #3C pivot.

I could see Fletcher overvaluing Compher too. Guys like Lundell/Gourde would be amazing but it's just not realistic.

We will see. If Byram has another set back all bets are off.

I like Bo and all and I think hes a great talent but if things would have worked out differently and the Avs won the lotto that #2C issue would already be solved with Jack Hughes. Not complaining but I really really really wanted Hughes.
