I thought I was a pessimist until I started reading some of the reactions to the Trade Deadline. At this point, I'm starting to think that Sakic could have acquired McDavid, Matthews, Josi, Fox, Shesterkin, etc at 99% retention and there would still be some people complaining that he wasted assets, overpaid and that the Avs are doomed.

I think we end up making the following moves in the off-season:
Nuke: 5 x $4.5
Lehkonen: 4 x $3.5
Sturm: 2 x $2.5

Then we make some minor retention re-signings of Maltsev, MacD and McD. I put Cogs in as well as an arbitrary 4th liner at around $1m.

With this roster we would still have a lot of room to potentially move out JTC and get another top 6 forward or more depth pieces for the third line.

Not the prettiest lineup, but certainly still competitive.

I think these moves will happen, but at least Nichushkin will cost more than $4.5 million

That 3rd like will be lucky to score 20 goals combined.

Maybe for Finland at the WC'ships if Colorado get eliminated early...
It's going to happen, the Avs were interested in Laine at the draft, and he and Rants are best friends. It may not happen next year, or even in three years, but when they are in their late 30s and a shell of their former selves? You bet your ass it's going to happen.

Yeah, both Nuke and Lehkonen in the top 6 and a bottom 6 that doesn't score. Where will the depth scoring come from?

Yeah....

IMO the entire point of the Jost/Sturm trade and why it benefited us was that we got out of paying Jost $2M for next year. Turning around and signing his replacement for even more money would just be a complete failure. Sturm hasn't shown anything at the NHL level yet to suggest he's earned a $2.5M pay day. Maybe he goes nuts for us down the stretch and in the playoffs, in which case maybe we can come back and review his spot on the roster.

But at least right now, if they're bringing him back it shouldn't be for a dime over $1M and it shouldn't be for any role but the 4C role.

Now, that roster does have almost $5M in cap space, and if we dont wildly overpay Sturm, it should have closer to $7M in cap space, which means there's definitely room for at least one legit quality Top 6 forward to be brought in which would make a large difference at least.

I imagine signing Trocheck in Free Agency to say a 5x5.5M contract would help a lot.... At that point you would have:

Landy - Mack - Mikko
Nuke - Trocheck - Newhook
Lehkonen - Sturm - JTC
Cogliano - Maltsev - LOC

Still a forward group that would struggle with depth scoring, but I'd be confident they at least make playoffs.

IF the Avs actually part ways with EJ next summer, we could be in serious business again. Even moreso if they part ways with Compher as well. Personally I think JTC is going to be used in a similar way as Graves was last summer and get dealt to recoup some draft picks that we just lost. This board hates JTC but I'd bet with anyone he could fetch us a 3rd round pick at the draft.

That lineup would be lucky to make playoffs IMO.
Lol. The Avs currently have a a 16 point lead on 2nd in their division. A 23 point lead on being out of a playoff spot. You think Kadri and Burakovsky are the difference in that and being lucky to make the playoffs? They likely won’t be as good as this year but what a take that is.

Yeah, at this point that top line and top 4 D could pull a pretty bad team kicking and screaming into the playoffs (barring too many injuries).

I feel like all the injuries we’ve dealt with the past 2 years needs to be factored in as well. We’ve absolutely dominated the regular season. I still remember some people predicting we’d struggle now that we weren’t in an easy division and losing Saad.

Winning a cup is an entirely different story but this defensive core/ top line will be enough to make the playoffs IMO. You’d need major injuries to the goaltending situation, Newhook to turn into Jost, and Byram to be finished for this team to head back to the lottery.

If this team misses the playoffs next year than Sakic needs to be fired because he’s made major mistakes.

Also keeping in mind Sakic very well could move on from guys like Erik Johnson and J.T. Compher to free up money.
