Yeah, both Nuke and Lehkonen in the top 6 and a bottom 6 that doesn't score. Where will the depth scoring come from?
Yeah....
IMO the entire point of the Jost/Sturm trade and why it benefited us was that we got out of paying Jost $2M for next year. Turning around and signing his replacement for even more money would just be a complete failure. Sturm hasn't shown anything at the NHL level yet to suggest he's earned a $2.5M pay day. Maybe he goes nuts for us down the stretch and in the playoffs, in which case maybe we can come back and review his spot on the roster.
But at least right now, if they're bringing him back it shouldn't be for a dime over $1M and it shouldn't be for any role but the 4C role.
Now, that roster does have almost $5M in cap space, and if we dont wildly overpay Sturm, it should have closer to $7M in cap space, which means there's definitely room for at least one legit quality Top 6 forward to be brought in which would make a large difference at least.
I imagine signing Trocheck in Free Agency to say a 5x5.5M contract would help a lot.... At that point you would have:
Landy - Mack - Mikko
Nuke - Trocheck - Newhook
Lehkonen - Sturm - JTC
Cogliano - Maltsev - LOC
Still a forward group that would struggle with depth scoring, but I'd be confident they at least make playoffs.
IF the Avs actually part ways with EJ next summer, we could be in serious business again. Even moreso if they part ways with Compher as well. Personally I think JTC is going to be used in a similar way as Graves was last summer and get dealt to recoup some draft picks that we just lost. This board hates JTC but I'd bet with anyone he could fetch us a 3rd round pick at the draft.
