Back to the usual thread after harsh attacks from the frenzied mob

Is it too early to start speculating what Sakic will do in next year's trade deadline?

I'll save you the time.

"He's not going to do anything is he?"
"Has Joe woken up yet?"
"I think Joe's done."
"Why didn't they pick that guy up off waivers?"
"Why that guy? He sucks!"
.
.
.
.
.
.
"I'm glad we didn't overpay for that guy."
"I like what Joe did at the deadline."

Wonder if we find out about any deals that were very close to getting done but fell through late. Remember last year we found out afterwards that Gibson was almost traded to Carolina, and I believe Parise was nearly sent to the Islanders as well?

Definitely feel like something was close on Garland, and possibly Chychrun as well(Chychrun almost certainly gets dealt in the Summer)... Gibson's name also popped up a bit again this deadline and with how awful he has been for the Ducks for a while now, I bet they move on from him this summer and I suspect them targeting a Goalie prospect in the Rakell trade is a sign that they're getting ready organizationally to start hunting for a future starter again.

It would be smart to trade Gibson at this point, and it fits the Ducks pattern of trading a goaltender on the downswing of their career. I do think there is a chance he rebounds on another team, but it's far from a guarantee. Either way, they have one of the best goalie prospects in Dostal, just acquired another trending prospect in Clang, and Stolarz is looking like he's ready to be a 1B.

Anaheim's goalie scouts are one of the best in the league, they've had stable goaltending for over two decades.

Giguere > Hiller > Andersen > Gibson.

@Balthazar, you asked in the trade frenzy thread about capspace relating to the Lehkonen and Cogliano trades. Those two added $1.15m and $1m against the cap, a combined $2.15m. Avs had $3m in deadline capspace to play with so they left $850k unused. They could of course have acquired another player to use up all of that (eg. a 3rd goalie), but they didn't have any more roster spots, unless they would have put someone on IR for at least a day.

Having a bit of capspace left probably isn't a bad thing either as it'll help cover bonuses to avoid overages next year. This year they had ~$1.7m less capspace because of overages so it does matter.

The extra $850k also gives them the option of calling up Maltsev ($809k caphit) to give him some games down the stretch even when they have a fully healthy roster, without needing to send anyone down or out anyone on LTIR.

I was of the belief that also Cogs had 50% retention, as is seen in capfriendly too.
This means they had just under 1.5mil which of course could have been used for something.
EDIT: e.g. exactly bonuses as Richard mentions above

Oh right, I didn't notice that Cogliano was 50% retained as well. Make that $1.35m unused then.

Bonus overages are applied to the average caphit across the season so the accrued amount of $1.35m won't be exactly what can be covered by bonuses, but it should still help cover a large chunk of it (if not all).

What do you think are the odds we might try to get Kane out of Chicago in the summer? He will be in last year of contract, so the price might not be over the top, bunch of picks might just do it. OFC Chicago would need to retain half of the salary or take someone like Compher as cap-dump. But they are not going anywhere in next few years, so those picks might have bigger worth to them than Kane in his final year, when they wont win it anyway. And for us, we might pretty much replace Burakovsky with Kane, which would be serious upgrade and absolutely worth the price IMO.

The key factor in any Kane deal will be his NMC. If he decides to wield it it's very possible that he could be cheaper than expected, like Giroux.

If you get Kane for futures (big IF) and get Nichuskin, Manson, and Kuemper re-signed, it's quite possible that next year's team could be just as good as this one (if not better).

Landeskog - Mackinnon - Rantanen
Nichuskin ----- Newhook --- Kane
Lehkonen --- 3C TDL rental - Compher?
4LW UFA ---- Sturm/Maltsev - O'Connor

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Byram - EJ/replacement

Kuemper
Francouz

A lot has to happen for those signings to be made, and obviously Kane as well. If Chicago want to move him to kick-start their rebuild and he flexes his NMC while choosing Colorado then it could be done though. 2023 1st + JTC as a base, then add as necessary from 2024 1st/Behrens/Olausson/etc.

I think keeping the team competitive as long as its possible is the prime reason why Sakic is kinda conservative with his moves. Actually, i think, with Kane as replacement of Burakovsky, and the rest of the team mostly intact (maybe UFA Giroux as replacement of UFA Kadri?, if needed) next team might be even stronger on paper than this year. As long as there are no long-term injuries or random dips of form for key players. And these older players we might acquire wont randomly fall off the cliff next year, while nowadays still playing at their usual elite standard.
