@Balthazar, you asked in the trade frenzy thread about capspace relating to the Lehkonen and Cogliano trades. Those two added $1.15m and $1m against the cap, a combined $2.15m. Avs had $3m in deadline capspace to play with so they left $850k unused. They could of course have acquired another player to use up all of that (eg. a 3rd goalie), but they didn't have any more roster spots, unless they would have put someone on IR for at least a day.

Having a bit of capspace left probably isn't a bad thing either as it'll help cover bonuses to avoid overages next year. This year they had ~$1.7m less capspace because of overages so it does matter.

The extra $850k also gives them the option of calling up Maltsev ($809k caphit) to give him some games down the stretch even when they have a fully healthy roster, without needing to send anyone down or out anyone on LTIR.
Hopefully someone other than Maltsev

Why? He's by far the most deserving.

35 points in 41 AHL games last time I checked.

With Colorado:
- 56% Corsi
- 57% face-offs
- 1st in takeaways/60
- 1st in hits/60

Would not surprise me at all if he's called up and Bednar rolls with Sturm at 3C and Maltsev at 4C. Something like:

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Nichuskin - Kadri - Burakovsky
Lehkonen - Sturm - Newhook
Helm - Maltsev - Compher

How many pts would Compher have if he was playing for the Eagles this season?

I have no idea. Maybe PPG? It's irrelevant though because Maltsev is a better center and faceoff taker.
I wasn't holding Compher up to Maltsev for comparison. I'm alluding to the fact that there are more deserving guys than Compher trying to earn their way on to the roster.

But because of his contract, he stays with the team no matter how ineffective he is. The guy is like a cock roach. And only because of his contract (which many will say isn't that much).

Yes please. Love that lineup.

I'd prefer MacDermid on that 4th line over Compher. :D

That is a stout group of 12 you put together, very creative.

Imagine how much more confident we would be in this team if Sakic had aggressively moved out Compher and JTC to make room for Danault?

9296
Newhook-Kadri-Burakovsky
Lehkonen-Danault-Nuke

This is just my ramblings because we were steps away from having one of the best shutdown lines in the league.

Why? Why you gotta go there??

I’d argue the 2 biggest mistakes Joe’s made in the last 3 years are:

(i) not trading for Pageau - which ok I understand not wanting to give up the assets which seemed like a lot at the time, but think we would’ve gotten past at least the stars in 2020 playoffs with him

(ii) not signing Danault

The Danault one is what really hurts as he was free (asset wise) and we would’ve literally been unstoppable this year and in excellent position for next year if/when Kadri leaves.

What do you think are the odds we might try to get Kane out of Chicago in the summer? He will be in last year of contract, so the price might not be over the top, bunch of picks might just do it. OFC Chicago would need to retain half of the salary or take someone like Compher as cap-dump. But they are not going anywhere in next few years, so those picks might have bigger worth to them than Kane in his final year, when they wont win it anyway. And for us, we might pretty much replace Burakovsky with Kane, which would be serious upgrade and absolutely worth the price IMO.

I'd be surprised. I know they kicked the tires before, but Sakic traded out a lot of the pieces he probably would've dangled for Kane. But never say never. :dunno:

Free agents can choose where they want to go, sakic didn’t have the cap room but even if he cleared it there’s no telling if Danault wanted to actually come here

Of course the player has to want to come here and we don’t know whether Danault was even interested, but it didn’t seem like we tried very hard for that.

I think Sakic shouldve at least tried trading for his rights.

I like the lineup with possibly Helm an either/or option with Cogliano up front. I would really love to see Maltsev get an opportunity based on how he has played in the AHL and how he has looked at times with the Avs. I took a bad offensive zone penalty against Tampa early in the year, however, so his career may be over with Bednar (j/k - kind of).

Moving Compher once is hard enough, I don't think we could convince two teams to take him.

You might be right about Pageau but the odds are very high that Danault was not interested in coming to Denver. It was clear he wanted a shot as 2C and he was never going to get that here with Kadri on the team. It cannot be a mistake if it had no chance of happening.

Yes, we would be unstoppable if we got dibs on every player and they would all want to play here.

Eye test I guess....not a fan. Not a fan of Sturm either. Sturm was healthy scratched in Minny and will he 3 C here ? Ughh. Move him to the wing on he 4th line and take faceoffs perhaps. And O'Connor must play but don't mind Aube Kubel eating nachos that's for sure.

Aube Kubel came in when new and got ample opportunity but is easy to see why he was waived from a poopr Flyer team.

Getting players that those teams didn't want doesn't seem like a success to me

All those assets traded and doesn't seem like the team got any better.

Aside from perhaps Lehkonen but I think we are overating him a tad and don't mind Manson for toughness. Why not just keep Zadorov ? He looks great under Sutter

Shoulda ran with what we had and used all that equity for a 2nd liner and maybe a goalie in the summer.

If we lose 2nd round again not much can be done now.

Thinking about it more, it's interesting we paid a higher price for Manson then we did Lehkonen.

Really goes to show the difference in prices at the deadline for Forwards compared to Dmen.

Compared to what other teams gave up for other Dmen I thought we did well with the Manson deal... But in general Defenders were very expensive this deadline while Forwards weren't really.

I get some of the pessimism on our trades, but come on our window is hardly closed. Our D core is built around players under 30 and if Byram can bounce back from these concussion issues we will have an elite under 25 d-core. Not to mention we can always re-coup assets in trades to free up cap space in the off-season.
