I honestly think EJ retires after this series. That opens up $6M? I want Manson back.

Adding a quote from the latest athletic article on EJ.

“I’ve been here a long time,” Johnson said. “This is where I live now. It’s where I’ll always live.”

Johnson has one year left on his contract paying him $6 million. It expires just in time for MacKinnon to get a new contract. So Johnson is realistic that while he may currently be the longest-tenured Denver athlete, he says with a wink, “Gabe will probably overtake me here in the near future.”

I really can't see a guy this loyal retiring or being traded. Hope Avs fans appreciate EJ and his final season(s) here, I still feel he's been underrated so very much.

INGRAm husso And smith have outplayed Kuemper he is below replacement level. No way I sign him

It's not going to take 500k more. If you want him for 4-5 years it's gonna cost areas 4.5M, if not 5M.

Who cares about the assets. We only have one more good year at a cup run left. Whatever they have to do to keep contracts as cheap as possible for next year is what they should be doing.

I agree the Avs next best shot at a cup is next season, but the Avs aren't suddenly going to become pretenders overnight in 2023. They'll still have an elite D with Makar, Byram, and Toews, along with their rest of their core intact.

Also, until other western teams coming out of rebuilds and shaping up as future contenders like LAK and Anaheim actually take that step the West will be wide open. Vegas aren't getting younger, Oilers gonna Oil, etc etc. Avs will have at least as good of a shot as any of those other teams at that point, even if they might not be overwhelming favourites anymore.

Thoughts on Justin Holl as a potential target in the off-season as a cheaper alternative to re-signing Manson?

Toronto extended Giordano and now have Reilly, Brodie, Muzzin, Giordano, Holl, Liljegren, and Sandin on D. Holl seems like the odd one out with Giordano sticking around (and basically filling the role Holl has been filling), unless they want to trade Sandin though that seems a bit dumb given his upside and cheap caphit. Holl's $2m aav is clearly the easiest way for them to manufacture some capspace to enable other moves.

A lot of TML fans apparently want Holl gone, but his on-ice stats are actually pretty solid, especially on the PK, as shown in the tweet below. He's struggles at times at 5v5 whenever he's been expected to move pucks a lot, but as a big and relatively mobile defensive Dman he'd fit stylistically next to either Girard or Byram who can do most of the puckmoving, and also take a spot on the PK.

At $2m x 1 year contract would be pretty manageable in both term and AAV, and given the above he shouldn't cost too much to acquire either.

Read up until the Tweets thinking there's some college free agent named Justin Hill.

I don't like the idea of a deadline goalie. It doesn't always work out like Roy did. If we win, just resign Kuemper, he is a very good goalie who was injured in round 2. Let's hope he's recovered.
The Roy trade happened in November or December.
I’ve been beating the drum like Keith Moon to get rid of JTC and his contract, but this post season is the best hockey he’s ever played and we’ll worth $3.5M. Given that and he’ll have the contract year motivation, I say keep him unless a good deal comes along.
I see it the other way. Since he's been for the vast majority of the past 2 years - inconsistent to put it politely - think it's probably a great opportunity to get something for him since he'll be viewed as a good middle-6 player instead of a cap dump.

I mean, I like the way JTC has played in the playoffs and everyone seems jazzed with his performance but this is what's been expected since he signed that contract, imo.

If they are willing to retain 5mil on that contract…
Varly will be a cheap trade acquisition if Lou follows recent precedent of shedding salary (Toews, Ladd, Boychuk). Plus he’s off the books next year if he doesn’t work out or a prime candidate for a short extension if he works out.

Lou gets up to $4M in cap space to help his blue line.

Like I said. Good deal, but I’m comfortable rolling the dice for a year.

Wonder what the chances are of the Avs landing Kuzmenko on a one year ELC. One would think from his perspective it would be quite appealing to play on a high-scoring cup contender to boost his points and exposure in his first year in the league, not least because the Avs will have a clear role for him on the 2nd line as the Burakovsky replacement.

Filling a top 6 wingers spot with an ELC would give the Avs all kinds of flexibility with filling out the rest of the roster, especially if you slot Rantanen as the 2C:

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Nichuskin
Kuzmenko - Rantanen - Lehkonen
Meyers - Compher - Newhook
xxxx ------ xxxxx - O'Connor

With that top 9 you could probably afford to bring back Kuemper and Manson, and/or take a run at adding someone like Nick Paul as a 3C to really beef up the forward group.

I still don't think he's worth $3.5M. The way he has played the last 5-6 games, however, someone is gonna want him. So, selling him with potential higher value this offseason might be smart. That's $3.5M added to Bura's $4.9M that can be immediately allocated to Lehk and Nuke to keep them around.

Read the very next tweet in that thread

Ah didn't see that.

The link you posted said " Kuzmenko has been touring North America, visiting with 4-5 teams according to CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal. Vancouver is his last stop, with a decision expected next week according to Dhaliwal."

So if it's "4-5" teams that could mean there's another 5th team in the running. Seems unlikely to be the Avs but I wouldn't completely count them out either. Recall that the Ben Meyers signing came out of the blue as well with no rumours ahead of time.

Edit: Also worth recalling that Colorado were the very first team Meyers interviewed with on zoom. It's possible Kuzmenko met with the Avs and liked them immediately but is then doing his due diligence with other teams just like Meyers did. The media noise was all about how he was signing in Minnesota but they clearly had no clue what was going on as no one saw Meyers choosing Colorado.
