NYI would be a great fit for Girard, they're desperate for a LHS puckmover.

They probably wouldn't move Barzal, and Pageau is more of a 3C, but maybe Brock Nelson? 3 years left at $6m AAV albeit with salaries less than his caphit. Nelson is 30 years old so that's not ideal, but he just put up 59 points in 72 games on a defensive team that missed the playoffs so he's still seemingly got plenty left in the tank. He's also solid defensively and can kill penalties.

NYI's other biggest need beyond a LHS puckmover is a top 6 scorer, so you can potentially include Burakovsky's UFA rights in the deal to add some value coming back.

Nelson + ___ for Girard + Burakovsky's UFA rights.

Edit: Here's a capfriendly roster with that scenario. It easily works out capwise:
Wouldn't it be ironic to trade a D-man back to the Islanders?
Sakic: "Yeah, thanks for Toews. You can have Girard now. We don't need him anymore thanks to you."

With Nuke being able to play with Landy and Mack on the top line, thus allowing Bednar to have Rants drive his own line, it really seems that he went from a "we'd like to re-sign if there's room" to "what can we do to make the room" type situation

Friedman said something along the lines of its believed the Avs will find a way to keep Nuke on the Jeff Marek show

Nichushkin is clearly one of Colorado's best players.

He's had a loyal fan following the last few years for his defensive play, even when only putting up low offensive totals. All it took was more ice time for the offensive bubble to burst. Lock this guy up!

I wonder what kind of 2Cs get shook from the tree if the package the Avs put together included Girard and Newhook? At that point you're getting a Top 3 Puck moving Dman on a great contract for 5 more years, but you're also getting a young good roster player with Top 6 upside as well, possibly as a Center at that. I would get why some teams would have hesitancy to move a 2C for Girard, because the Center position is so ridiculously valuable that you never want to move a good one... But if you're also getting a young guy back with big upside like Newhook it might make a few Centers more available.

I'm still not 100% sure how LTIR works?

During the season this means Vegas can go up to 7.5M over the salary cap essentially I believe? But dont they have to be cap compliant when the season starts before LTIR can be used? Or not?

Yeah they can be over the cap by that amount, but banking cap is really difficult now.

Yeah I just read up on the LTIR section on Cap friendly. So they can take advantage of LTIR in the Offseason as well, they just dont get to accrue cap space during the season and could get penalized by performance bonus later on.

Basically what I gather from this move is that Vegas will essentially have a 90M cap to work with now next year, but they will likely be far more active in the summer then they will at the deadline.

Fully expect them to be big players for a UFA like Forsberg or perhaps Letang.

At least Vegas actually paid a price this time. They lost probably their best player down the stretch there. Vegas signing Dadonov didn’t really make much sense from the beginning.

This is an interesting idea.

I don’t want to just throw either of these players away, but that’s a pretty damn good package for a 2C.

Can’t really think of many 2C’s who would fit for this trade. Maybe Schmaltz. I’d like Arizona to add a little bit though.

Think Joe dropped the ball a bit by not re-signing Nuke before experimenting him on the 1st line.

Nuke would've instantly signed a similar contract to Coleman (6 x $4.9 mil) last summer, feels like now it's closer to 5.5-6 mil.

The idea I have would be something with the Islanders:

Girard + Newhook + 2023 1st for Nelson + Mayfield + 2023 2nd

Islanders have a need for LHD to play behind Pelech in the Top 4. Girard would help that teams mobility so much on the back end. Especially with Trotz now gone and they likely focusing more on generating offensive opportunities. They also get a young forward with solid upside in Newhook. They could try him at Center or Wing

Avs get a very solid RD at a good cap hit for another deep run next year, a really good partner for Byram. A 2C in Nelson signed to a solid contract for 3 more years.
