Nobody is getting the #2 OA pick. Slaf is exactly what the doctor ordered for NJ and they know it.

Now if Montreal pick Slaf that's a different story but it's very unlikely.
I mean there have been slight rumblings that the Devils would move it. I think it’d take a stupid offer for them to move it though.

Wonder if the Avs can do something around Gibson, Girard + Newhook, and the #2 pick?

Something like NJ gets Girard, Newhook, a top prospect from Anaheim, and the Avs 1st in 2023

Anaheim gets the #2 pick

Avs get Gibson and Zacha?

I'm just spitballing here.

way to much, I wouldn’t trade Newhook, a 2023 first and Girard for Gibson and Zacha. That’s awful value. Newhook and the 2023 first is likely the ask for Gibson and then Girard for Zacha!? NJ gets waaaay to much for 2nd overall.

They are absolutely not moving that pick unless someone comes forth with an absolutely INSANE offer, like if Boston handed over David Pastrnak. And even then I think they waffle a little.

Exactly. Last time a top 3 pick got traded was for prime Alexei Yashin 21 years ago. It never happened in the salary cap era.

if Newhook + 2023 1st gets you Gibson we need to do that yesterday.
I have my doubts.

And that was one of the worst trades of all time. I don't think we'll ever see managerial incompetence on the level of Mad Mike Milbury in sports ever again.

It won't.

Gibson has a 3.09 GAA and a .904 SV% since January 1st, 2019.

He had a 4.07 GAA and .884 SV% in his final 25 starts this year.

Playing for a bad Ducks team doesn't explain that level of suckitude for that long of a period.

If Price’s SC performance wasn’t enough to move Sakic to acquire Quick, I doubt his elite GT’ing skills will motivate Sakic to acquire him unless they’re practically giving him away.

People talk about Gibson the same way that they were talking about OEL before they realize he is no longer the guy they thought he was.

Here's what Seravalli had to say about him today:

Spoiler: OEL wasn't "energized" after getting traded to Vancouver.

The only hedge would be retention, which would obviously cost more.

I imagine playing in a dilapidated arena before an unenthusiastic fanbase and an incompetent general manager (Murray of course, Verbeek already looks to be about 12 levels smarter) while being hung out to dry every night by your woeful defense would be enough to take the wind out of anyone's sails.

What concerns me about those numbers is if they're related to his health. Any time Varly hit an extended streak of suckiness you could always tell something was off with him, it wouldn't be long after they'd reveal he was trying to play through something. I imagine Gibson is doing the same.

So IMO he remains a viable option, just depends on what the Avs are willing to pay for him. Another possible option if they can swing it is Stolarz, but he too gets hurt. There are no magical unicorn goalies out there to be had, it's about making the least bad choice this summer.

People are missing the whole point with Gibson... pointing to overall sv percentage and the decline there. Dude had the highest high danger sv % by a long shot. His above expected was .5% above any other player. Had one of the lowest percentage of shot blocks by teammates. Had one of the closest avg goal distance and avg shot distance in the league. While having one of the highest HD shots against in the league.

More than that though, watch the games. Guy is still elite.

He has one of the worst goals saved above expected stats this season. Guy hasn't been good for a while.

There's a big difference tho - Gibson was actually good to begin with. OEL sucked and continues to.

IF we win the cup this year (let’s hope we can), I don’t think Sakic makes a move to get Gibson. IF we lose, then I would imagine that goaltending might be one of the major factors why. In that instance I could see the Avs making a play for Gibson.

Are you really comparing an always bad OEL to John Gibson?
You guys have selective memory. OEL was always bad?

6th overall pick, he was once considered an elite defenseman in the NHL and for many people the most underrated player in the league. He went twice to the All Star game.

Selective memory? Just because he made the All Star game twice on Arizona didn't make him good. He's always been an absolute disaster defensively - arguably one of the worst defenders in hockey since he debuted.

His offense was also overrated. He only put up 50+ points once. Compare that to a similarly flawed defensemen in Tyson Barrie who has done that three times.

He's never been good, draft status be damned.
