Hot take - Manson is a better fit for this team than Girard is with Makar, Byram, and Toews ahead of him on the depth chart.

The Avs won't have any issues making the playoffs, and while G was playing decent before the injury, I think Manson has been more consistent and adds size and grit that our backend lacks.

It's not much of a hot take tbh.

Girard cannot be counted on during the playoffs, either he plays like crap or gets injured. There is no need for a player like that on a cup contending team. Manson also brings that nasty shutdown hockey that the team needs much more.

Girard is good when rules are applied like they should but in playoffs they are not. It's different world and different players gain edge from it. Usually the physical type and strong players, who can take abuse and give abuse.

Girard was playing great before his injury..

If we can get a youngish and good 2C with term for Girard based deal you do it, absolutely. Otherwise you don't. Next season D corps without Girard:

Toews Makar
Byram ?
? EJ
?
MacDermid

Injury to Toews, Byram or Makar and our defense goes from strenght to weakness. We even traded 2/3 of our best d prospects away. System we play requires great defense.

If Behrens was 100% NHL ready next season, trading G would make more sense.

We need to make some tough decisions either way. Girard is on a great contract, but if he always gets injured in playoffs, he is useless to us.

He is the most valuable trading chip we have (and something we can potentially trade). It doesn't mean we will sell him for nothing, absolutely not. His contract itself is very valuable.

Wonder if Carolina would sell low on Kotkaniemi. He has 1 point in 13 games. He is capable of much more though if used as a 2nd line C. 4.8M cap hit for 8 years.

Dreaming of if the Avs woulda drafted

Shesterkin at 114 and not Alexis Pepin oh and from the same draft Pasta instead of Conner Bleackly

If you’re going to do that, in 2015 the Avs could have drafted the Finnish trifecta of Rantanen, Aho and Hintz if Roy was obsessed with beefy Québécois bois

Even though I really like G he does seem to be the odd man out. But how do you even market him in a trade? “He’ll be great for your team……..unless you make the playoffs!”

Yeah but the first round was called more like the regular season. Who’s to say that progression doesn’t continue?

Ya which is why I don't think we make any decisions until we need to resign Toews.

You've got to be very careful with Josh Manson. Don't forget:

- Turns 31 next year
- Plays a physical style that never ages well
- Has dealt with injury issues the last 3 seasons
- Will likely cost somewhere in the 4M-5M range for 4+ years as a UFA.

People complain about EJ and his contract. You're basically adding more years to that contract if you re-sign Josh Manson.

I love what he is doing right now, and if the Avs win the Cup he'll surely have played a huge role. But if that happens, I wouldn't mind letting him walk and cash in as a UFA.

I agree but on the other hand, who's going to play the right side going forward? Girard again?

Top 4 dmen are hard to find and expensive.

I have huge doubts about a Byram-Girard 2nd pairing. IMO one of the major reason why Girard became good again with Manson was that he was playing on his natural left side and wasn't forced to play on the right.

To be honest I just have a feeling Samuel Girard gets traded for offensive help or a right-shot defensemen. I think Bo Byram is showing right now just how high his ceiling is, and if (big "if") he can survive the rest of these playoffs healthy + have an entire offseason of no lingering concussion symptoms, Girard may be the odd man out.

There are also a lot of pending UFA right shot defensemen available this summer:

P.K. Subban
Kris Letang
John Klingberg
Justin Schultz
Josh Manson
Colin Miller
Justin Braun
Ilya Lyubushkin
Jan Rutta
Mark Pysyk

Obviously there are a lot of guys on that list I want no part of (Subban, Klingberg, Schultz) but I wouldn't put it past Sakic to target one of them to play RHD in an evenly split role with Erik Johnson next season IF Girard is traded.

Not a lof of them are able to play top 4 minutes though...Letang is too old and expensive, Klingberg is a no-no and out of the rest Manson is probably the best bet.

Even after Girard has an absolute monster showing in the playoffs there’s still a bunch of morons on here who ignore all that and want him gone.

Yep. A lot of dummies here. Dude was our best player in games 1 and 2 against the Blues, and was solid against the Preds as well.

One bad, freak injury in his career in the playoffs and now he's "injury prone and sucks". Lot of idiots for sure.

Ya, but it's hard to find a replacement. We know a big physical RHD is needed on our team behind Makar. Manson and EJ proving how valuable it is during this playoffs. Maybe we get a Manson and EJ that takes a step back for us in the regular season but still become playoff warriors.

Agreed. Byram is still an injury risk and Toews may very well be worth $8m+/yr come contract extension time. If you opt to keep him, you lose G. If you opt to let Toews go, you need G to play behind Bo.

I don't see any world where all 3 of Toews/Girard/Byram are here in 2 years tho. Way too expensive.

There's another year on this decision. Hopefully Behrens pans out in that time to make this work.

To me, his injury history in the playoffs is hard to ignore. Even after he bulked up it only took one big hit to knock him out of the playoffs.

I love the guy. But to me he seems to be the most attractive piece we have for a trade.

Byram is breaking out and if he stays healthy can easily bring what G does and more. So do we play Girard bottom pair for 5mil? It’s called trading from an area of strength to fill a weakness. If possible (byrams health) only an idiot would consider that a bad move.

I think Behrens could replace Girard long term (although still a long shot) and Byram will be able to replace Toews in 2 years.

After trading Timmins, Helleson and Barron though we have nothing left on the right side. Makar and perhaps EJ. That's it. Nothing in the NHL, nothing in the pipeline. Completely empty.
