You want guys like Oettinger, Vasi, Gibson, Knight, Shesterkin, Demko etc. you draft them and you dont draft Bleakley, Kaut and f***in Mitchell Heard.

From what I can tell having to stay away from goalies in the first round is more a myth than a good strategy.

I'd be curious to see the success rate of goalies drafted in the first round compared to skaters drafted at the same spots.

And they have to reconsider their aversion to trading up in the draft. You can't just wait for these guys to fall to your pick.

Nothing against Newhook and Timmins, but the Avs were 3 spots away from Knight and 6 spots away from Oettenger, in years it felt like they may actually take those guys if they were available.

They could have had the goalie problem solved for the foreseeable future, but Instead they had to give up a 1st plus Timmins for one year of Kuemper, and if they don't keep Darcy, they'll have to give up more assets for a goalie.

When was the last time they moved up in a draft? I remember them moving down but never up.

They rarely do either, but I can't remember when they traded up. Haven't under Sakic or Sherman. These were the last times they traded down. 2015 stings because Aho and Carlo were taken in between their original pick and Greer.

2015:

Traded 2015 2nd (#31) to SJ for their 2015 2nd (#39) and the Avs original 2016 2nd (Cam Morrison) and 2017 6th (Denis Smirnov) previously dealt in Brad Stuart trade.

2018:

Trades Nashville's 2nd round pick acquired in Duchene trade (#58) to Pittsburgh for Ottawa's 3rd round pick (#64) (Justus Annunen) and Pittsburgh's 5th round pick (#146) (Danila Zhuravlyov).

2020:

Trades 5th (#149) and 7th (#211) round picks to Pittsburgh for their 5th (#139) (Ryder Rolston)

Dallas traded up for Oettinger so that spot (26th) was actually available for trade and the Avs had pick 32nd.

That hurts.

Stars traded a 1st and 3rd for that pick. Avs didn't have a 3rd in that draft.

I think having the #32 2nd instead of the Stars #29 1st was the bigger hurdle. They might have been able to made it work though. Bigras probably still had a bit of value, and they ended up moving him later that season for Graves.

They could have found something comparable to a 3rd too. Like Wood or Beaudin. Or traded them for someone else's 3rd.

#32 + Bigras + Wood/Beaudin for #26 might have been close in value at the time to #29 + 3rd (#70).

Hell they could have thrown in a 4th or 5th too. Or just all the Avs picks past the 3rd round. The only pick in the last 12 Avalanche drafts that has panned out past the 3rd was Butcher in the 5th in 2013 and he's barely holding on.

Let’s pump the brakes on Oettinger, he had one amazing series but let’s not act like he’s some proven elite goalie. Lots of goalie can get hot for a short stretch. Not to mention he played in the Dallas trap system.

Why? He was a pretty highly touted prospect and had a good year. He's obviously not going to play at the level he was at against the Flames consistently, but he's pretty clearly looking like he's going to be a higher end starter in the league.

Today in NHL 22, I started a franchise mode or whatever and traded Burakovsky for Sorokin and then Kuemper for Tuch. I think we should do that, honestly.
I haven’t gotten NHL since 20 I think maybe 19 but I remember I traded for Sarros one time and the Avs won some cups :laugh: If only that woulda happened in real life lol.

top priority in the offseason: a goalie. UFA options are awful and we dont have many assets anymore to move.

but look on the bright side: Kuemper's money should be enough to keep both Nuke and Lehkonen. :dunno:

So then where does the money come from to get a goalie that replaces Kuemper?

And another thing: If the Avs actually want to go out and get a goalie that is a legit and clear upgrade on Kuemper, that goalie is going to cost us at least ~5-6M in cap space if not more.
